Rugby: Bermuda 7s Tournament This Weekend

March 15, 2019

The Annual Bermuda 7s Tournament will take place this weekend featuring collegiate divisions for male and female teams.

In its 4th year of operation, the 2019 Bermuda 7s Tournament will feature 17 teams, a total of 13 male teams and 5 female teams. Bermuda will be entering 2 teams in the men’s division and 1 team in the female division.

The Bermuda men’s team will benefit from the return of Alex Doyling, who earned a rugby scholarship to Kutztown in last year’s tournament, while the Women’s team will be the first tournament for several new players who have joined the team through the Women’s Development Academy.

Tournament organizer Tom Healy commented, “We’re elated to be hosting the Bermuda 7s for the 4th consecutive year. It’s a great opportunity to blood new players and to assess the eligible players for this year’s Olympic qualifier in July. This year we will see over 12 Beyond Rugby graduates representing Bermuda and vying for scholarship opportunities as well as the potential to join the National Men’s 7s team.

“We will also see a few new faces take the pitch to represent the Women’s team through the newly implemented Women’s Development Academy. This will be the biggest tournament in our four-year history. Several teams will be staying on the island post tournament, with Chesapeake playing at 15s game on Monday against our National 15s side. We would also like to extend a massive thank you for the Bermuda Regiment, Bermuda Tourism Authority and Ariel Re for their continued support.”

The tournament will kick off at National Stadium tomorrow at 4:30, continuing all day Saturday. Saturday will feature food and bar concessions with a family fun day including face paint, bouncy castles and games in addition to streaming of the Six Nations games. All are encouraged to come out and support this free event.
