‘UK Encouraged Bermuda To Engage With EU’

March 30, 2019

“The UK has encouraged Bermuda to engage with the EU Commission throughout the process in order to deliver the changes they committed to make in full,” Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General Mel Stride said.

This follows after the EU announced that Bermuda has been added to the list of ‘non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes’ earlier this month.

Premier David Burt recently met with Pierre Moscovici, the European Union Commissioner of Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, and the Government said they “look forward to continued dialogue with the Commission,” adding that “Bermuda is confident that we will be removed from the list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes at the earliest opportunity.”

According to the UK Parliament Hansard, on March 26th, Shadow Minister of Treasury Anneliese Dodds asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, “What representations his Department has made to the EU on behalf of Bermuda on its inclusion on the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.”

In response, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General Mel Stride said, “The UK has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including all EU Member States and many of the jurisdictions being assessed, as part of the process for agreeing the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.

“Bermuda is a fiscally sovereign jurisdiction, and has been liaising directly with the EU institutions on this issue. The UK supports the list and has been active in discussions, ensuring the process is fair an objective across all jurisdictions.”

Shadow Minister Dodds also asked, “Whether the Government has provided assistance to Bermuda to help it fulfil its commitment to comply with required good governance criterion on substance requirements for zero-tax countries of the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.”

In response, the Financial Secretary Stride said, “As with other jurisdictions subject to the EU’s screening process, the UK has encouraged Bermuda to engage with the EU Commission throughout the process in order to deliver the changes they committed to make in full.”

  2. Donderered says:

We have the uk saying ,’in order to deliver the changes they (bermuda) committed to make in full.’
We have moscovici tweeting about reforms.
We have our premier talking about ‘surprise’ by moscovici
We seem to have a gulf in information and position here

  3. St.George's Passport and Immigration Control says:

Vote of No Confidence required in the plp.

  4. Rocky5 says:

PLP’s pants should be on FIYAH!! Surprise, surprise, PLP unabashed disdain of all things “British” is facking up our economy!!!

  5. DeOnion says:

This really is very concerning indeed.
First the Premier tells us that one of the leading figures in the EU was surprised by our blacklisting.
Second that same person, Pierre Moscovici tweets about reforms bermuda needs to make in order to get off the blacklist.
Third the UK now talks of bermuda delivering the changes it committed to make in full.
There is a massive disconnect between the Premier’s position and that of the UK and the EU.
I really do not think this government is being transparent about this at all

  6. PANGAEA says:

Let us all imagine what changes will be made which will effect us after the UK and Bermuda gets out of the EU.
Dont give me this one door closes and another door opens…………….. garbage.

  7. Reality Cheque says:

“As with other jurisdictions subject to the EU’s screening process, the UK has encouraged Bermuda to engage with the EU Commission throughout the process in order to deliver the changes they committed to make in full.”

So in other words, remove that big chip on your shoulder and quit skipping important meetings because you think you know more than them.

How did that work out for you? ——-> BLACKLIST

    • Kathy says:

No, in other words, the UK was saying “F*%£ off Bermuda, you deal with the EU. Although you are our dependent territory and we will always be able to tell YOU what to do in every instance (including opening your corporate registrars to the world and forcing you to allow British expats to vote and hold office), in this instance we will not defend your position as a dependent territory. You are on your own!”

      • Question says:

Bermuda’s arrogant and incompetent leadership got us into this mess. Burt decided not to attend meetings with the UK. “Too busy”. So now he can get us out of the mess he got us into.

      • Anbu says:

As they should tell us to F-off. Typical bermudians. Beat the piss outta someone then have the nerve to expect them to help u. We deserve everything we r getting with these muppets in change. Thank u for being so stupid plp voting base, once again…….
