Due to a BIU meeting being held at 10.30am tomorrow [June 12] there “will be a disruption of several government services,” including bus service, ferry service, a “minor disruption to garbage collection in the central parishes,” mail delivery and more.

A Government spokesperson said, “The public is advised that due to a Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] meeting being held tomorrow [June 12] at 10.30 a.m. there will be a disruption of several government services.

“The meeting is anticipated to last for around two hours and is being held to ratify a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“Affected services include:

  • “Department of Public Transportation – bus service interruption from 10.00 am – 1.00 pm and ferry service interruption from 9.00 am – 1.00 pm.
  • “The Ministry of Public Works: Minor disruption to garbage collection in the central parishes.
  • “Ministry of Home Affairs: Dog Wardens.
  • “Ministry of Education: Custodians and Store personnel and Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy bus drivers and crossing guards.
  • “The Bermuda Post Office [BPO]: Mail delivery – however efforts are being made to minimize the effect to the public as much as possible.”

          • question says:

By ‘redemption’ you mean ‘vindictive revenge with no justification’. Got it.

          • Reality Cheque says:

How’s that working out for you?
You seem pretty hate-filled. Is that the part you are taking “FULL advantage of”? Sounds like a great life.

            You are boring.

          • bluenose says:

          • CHRIS says:

  2. wahoo says:

    Good grief.

  3. Ringmaster says:

Just a normal Bermuda week. Time for a disruption to paying taxes.

    • Paul says:

Ringmaster,I and others agree we should all ban together and not pay our taxes, Enough is enough already.

    • wahoo says:

I would second that, this is getting ridiculous.

  4. sandgrownan says:

Minor disruption to garbage collection in the central parishes? How will we know the difference?

Bus service interruption? So, normal then.

Mail interruption? So, just pretend it’s raining.

    • Erm says:

About to say the same thing, especially about the trash collection!

  5. sandgrownan says:

“..The meeting is anticipated to last for around two hours and is being held to ratify a Collective Bargaining Agreement…”

Why don’t they allow voting by proxy to avoid interruptions of service? Or mail in votes…oh wait…the mail service sucks. LOL

  6. Paul says:

No buses (again) ferry service disruptions, garbage pick up,and the list goes on….and we the people suffer…
I have always said that the B.I.U.run this Island, and the people be damned.
Time for a snap election people, and the sooner the better.

  7. question says:

They’re really going to disrupt the Dame Marjory Bean Hope Academy?
That is an awful thing to do. It’s no wonder nobody has any respect for these people.

  8. Me says:

Oh great an extra day before heroes

  9. Let’s Go Bermuda says:

Are we open for business Bermuda or not? Very single Bermudian in the hospitality industry with this action!! So sefish!

  10. And you complain about taxis ha

  11. cpm says:

Why not Friday they could have had a long weekend
Are we taxpayers paying for workers wages while they attend all these meetings?

    • Paul says:

A former Premier said about Bermudians if they complained about anything,(this to shall pass) and guess what we complain about no bus service or trash pick up and everything else that we have to deal with… and we still pay for taxes !!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Dill says:

100% of YOU people enjoy the benefits the BIU fought for outlined in the CBA. Those of us attending the meeting are tax payers too. So go ahead and not pay your tax and get your azz in jail. Better yet,if you’re so uncomfortable about what’s going on, leave. Wage negotiation talks will benefit you dummies too. Carry on with your negative comments. smfh

    • Question says:

I don’t get 6 weeks vacation. I don’t get 70 days sick leave a year. I don’t get to carry forward unused sick leave. I don’t get to stop work for a bs union meeting to ratify an agreement, The BIU doesn’t do sh3t for me or most people. You’re selfish and lazy in your guaranteed jobs. You wonder why no one respects you.

      • Onion Juice says:

But you get a lunch hour, vacation, sick pay, maternity leave, perternity leave.

        • question says:

Everything I get is freely available to everyone in my kind of job in every civilized western country with a free-market system. I get plenty of benefits which are not available to workers in communist countries.

Workers in communist countries end up starving in poverty.
You should move to one, you would enjoy the experience.

    • Mb says:

No one is knocking union workers desire for better wages
      We 100% support you
It’s just …do we have to put brakes on already poor public transport
      AGAIN
Do you enjoy watching moms and students and others standing at stops waiting for buses that never come as you pass on way to your meeting?
We are all over the rat plague now and just deal when trash not collected…but the public bus situation, prisons, teachers, enough is enough!
Go talk to the plp MPs who are union friends and get what you want that way instead of shutting down bda every time you all got to meet

    • sandgrownan says:

Why do they all need to be “out” for the negotiations?

    • Ringmaster says:

As a Government employee you do not pay tax, you refund part of the tax that is paid by the private sector to pay you.

    • aceboy says:

So, what does this collective bargaining agreement say about work stoppages?

Does it give the BIU members the ability to have “meetings” whenever they like and disrupt service to the public?

You see, we all know that the BIU ignores ANY CBA when they feel they have been wronged in some way. So, having a meeting to agree a CBA that the members will ignore at will is ironic, to say the least.

Enjoy your little “get together” and knuckle touch time.

  13. My my my says:

Now we can’t even get a one day trash pick-up. I’m going to dump my trash on the steps of the Cabinet building.

  14. Hello says:

Why 4 hours off for a 2 hour meeting (9 until 1pm) then have to take a lunch hour?? They always do it when we have an abundance of tourists here just to disrupt everyone. Our visitors go back with a sour taste in their mouth for sure.

  15. Joe Bloggs says:

The meeting is to “ratify a Collective Bargaining Agreement”. That means the BIU negotiating team has already agreed the terms and this meeting is to get the general membership to approve.

I would have thought that such approval could be given by e-mail without a meeting.

  16. Gustav says:

They just want more money for less working hours.
    OJ
Because all of them suffered already 400 years
