St. George’s Town Hall Meeting On July 11
Mayor of St. George George Dowling III will be hosting the first public Town Hall meeting of the new administration on Thursday, 11th July at 6:45pm at the Penno’s Wharf Terminal Building.
Mayor Dowling stated, “The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the new team, address security issues and highlight the plan for Town.”
“Mayor Dowling invites all residents, businesses and partners to attend,” a spokesperson said. “In the Spring of 2019 the 200+-year-old Corporation was set to be dismantled and mark the end of the ability for residents and businesses voting for their Mayor and Councillors. Through Senate intervention, the Town was spared losing the right to vote for their elected officials.
“The Worshipful Mayor George Dowling III, JP was elected on May 9, 2019 to lead the charge for progressing the Town. The July 11 event continues the Town’s story and outlines the immediate plans for the future.”
Mayor Dowling states, “This event will highlight key areas that need to be addressed and introduce the people tasked with programmes to help achieve the overall goal. This can range from activities to support economic growth; infrastructure that meets our growing needs; and financing that allows us to experience success.”
“Recently, Town security became a front-page national headline. This demonstrates the importance of the Town of St George to Bermuda – Visitors and residents from around the Island patronize Town businesses. At the Summer Town Hall, we will have the Bermuda Police Service on hand to provide an overview of policing and security in the Town. This will allow constituents to hear first-hand answers to their concerns.”
Mayor Dowling adds, “The Corporation has started the process of developing a Town Plan to meet the immediate and long-term needs of residents and businesses that integrates into a historic Town profile. To be clear, this is a Town and not a City – unrestricted commercial development is not permitted.”
“People live in the Town,” the Mayor states. “As a priority, our Town Plan must encompass the needs of residents while accommodating new business opportunity and tourist trade.
“We also have to be aware of the requirements for technological advancements such as electric cars, placement of solar batteries and comprehensive Town WiFi service. Further, we have to include significant infrastructure demands required for cruise ships and visiting yachts.”
Mayor Dowling closes, “It is important all Town residents, business operators and Town partners attend the Summer Town Hall. We are making plans for them and need their input on planning for the future of the Town of St George and they need to remain abreast.”
The agenda includes:
- Welcome by the Mayor
- Introduction of Councillors
- Policing & Security in the Town
- Town Plan
- Closing
“We welcome everyone in the St. George’s community to attend the Town Hall meeting” the Mayor concludes.
