Airport Seeking Used Luggage To Help Testing

August 8, 2019

Skyport is asking the community to donate used luggage to assist with testing of new equipment in Bermuda’s new passenger terminal building.

A spokesperson said, “If you have unused luggage you wish to donate, please email orat@skyport.bm or call 299-4832 to donate by December. For every donated piece of luggage, a ‘tag’ will be given as a raffle ticket for a monthly draw. Prizes will include gas vouchers, restaurant gift cards and grocery vouchers, to name a few.

“The new airport terminal building, which will be completed next year, will have modern, state of the art equipment, including a cutting-edge baggage handling system. It was installed by Glidepath, a New Zealand-based company with nearly 50-years of experience in delivering airport baggage handling and integrated security screening systems.

“The baggage handling system is used to carry bags checked in by passengers, from the flight check-in desks to a holding area where they are then driven to their plane on baggage carts. The complex system is rigged in the ceilings of the first floor of the new building.

“It consists of 242 Conveyors totalling almost 3.5 kilometres in length traveling up to 1.8 meters per second. In addition to transporting bags to the flight loading location, the system software will maintain the passenger information for each bag and monitor its position along the conveyor belts.

“The new mechanical system and software package will allow passengers to experience more efficient travel processing in Bermuda and help avoid delays.”

Mikaela Pearman, Marketing & Communications Officer, Skyport, says: “A fully functioning baggage handling system is an integral part of an efficient airport terminal. Skyport, along with its partners in the programme will be conducting tests and trials of the system and we encourage members of the community to donate old luggage they are no longer using, so that we can test the system efficiently.

“The testing of equipment brings us one step closer to opening a world-class airport for Bermuda. Bermuda’s new, modern passenger terminal building will be completed in 2020.”

  1. Boston Whaler Owner says:

ask the plp ministers, they have lots of used luggage!

    • inna says:

I was thinking send the ministers themselves around. Might do ‘em so good.

      • Boston Whaler Owner says:

that wouldnt do any good, they know how to go round in circles

      • Onion Juice says:

Ask those Fools who snuck in de House 5:30am to make this shadey deal.

        • OG says:

LOL@OJ….you fools got played by people who actually work…4 years later you’re still licking your wounds. LOL

        • question says:

I know how you hate the idea of starting work early.

        • Things a Gwan says:

Nobody snuck. You are just bitter because you were outsmarted. You advertised that you were going to protest and block them from going in at 9am . So they went early. LOL.

By the may you fail to acknowledge that the PLP came up with a plan to build a new airport before the lost power. So had they remained in power they would have moved forward with the same plans. The only problem was that they spent and borrowed and spent some more and also chased businesses and people which equated to money leaving too. So PLP had the idea but no way to pay. OBA had no way to pay but they found a solution, perhaps the only one. Don’t like it? Well perhaps you should direct your frustrations towards the PLP. Had they not spent every penny PLUS borrowed and put us over a billion in the whole we would have had the money to build the airport that the PLP proposed

      • Wahoo says:

        Handbags are considered carry on.

    • RIP oba/UBP says:

Lets be honest and clear here! The UBP used so many people that they changed the name to OBA to try & escape their past.

plp 25 vs 11 oba howzaaaat

      • OG says:

…let be honest, the plp is made up of the old UBP…but you fools don’t see that. LOL

      • Anbu says:

I wonder. Does it hurt to be as stupid as u muppets are? Ubp used people?! Lmao. Oh man u lot make it too easy. Hahaha. Escape their past? Oh you mean actually stimulating a dying economy? God this island gets dumber by the second.

  2. Well...... says:

Would be happy to donate, but wish there was a drop off in Hamilton.

    • Onion Juice says:

So ya telling me WE de Tax Payers are on de hook for $30 Million a year for 30 years are now asked to DONATE, kinda reminds me of Americas Cup.
We gave Billionaires $77 Million to play with their toys and were asked to DONATE our time ( VOLUNTEER).
Classic example of pissing on my head and tell me its raining!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • truthertz says:

It should kinda remind you of the PLP hospital WING deal in which we are paying $30mn a year for 30 years for a damn WING (ie not even a new hospital).

      • Onion Fist says:

Gettin you back for d horsepital OJ so stop ya silly cryin!!!!

      • OG says:

        Who is “WE” ?
You’ve never worked a day in your life OJ…you obviously have no skills.
By ‘WE”, you mean hard working, tax paying people.

      • Mike Hind says:

Is there anything you don’t whine about?

      • Toodle-oo says:

Patiently waiting on your video evidence of de billionaires getting off of their billion dollar yachts and going to de OBA HQ and getting the millions handed to them .. lmao

      • wahoo says:

Well we heard you were easily deceived. Is it raining now?

      • New Generation says:

Where are you getting this 30m a year figure from?

      • Anbu says:

Oj u piss into the wind every single day. 350+ mill. When has the plp ever had a return on anything? Besides a second helping at a free food givaway?

  3. Stinky D. says:

All that money being made on the bad deal for Bermudians and you want me to donate luggage
    HELL NO!!

    • mixitup says:

      Lmao!!

    • truthertz says:

How do you feel about the hospital WING deal (not even a whole hospital!) that costs us $30mn a year for 30 years?

    • 2woke says:

Be sure you don’t use that airport either…don’t want to give them any more money.

    • Mike Hind says:

Would you rather they spend MORE money and buy new luggage?
That sounds like a brilliant plan..:

  4. John E. Thorne says:

It was only a bad deal before the election. Ask David Burt.

  5. Question says:

If you’re looking for some old bags I could suggest a few.

  6. not biting says:

They have been asking for luggage for a while now and seems have received few bites. Originally they were looking to buy the luggage then came up with this donate and get a chance to win. They don’t make it convenient either as you have to drive all the way out to the airport to drop off. Finally said what the raffles prizes are, were very vague before, come to think of it, they still are vague!

    • New Generation says:

No one was asking to buy old luggage. I am not sure why some people feel the need to put a negative spin on everything.

  7. Let it goat says:

I wonder if they’ll improve the baggage process so that our luggage isn’t ruined when it rains, and left in the open being soaked while they pull it into the arrivals area.

I can’t believe they’re adding a modern luggage conveyer though, it shouldn’t be possible! How dare they!

  8. Triangle Drifter says:

Good grief! Such negativity. Everyone has some beat up bags stored somewhere. Get rid of them for a good cause. You might win something. Maybe a pass for the VIP lounge where you will have a chance to talk to your politicians next time you are traveling.

  9. jerry says:

our ministers come with a lot of extra baggage

  10. OG says:

“I can’t believe they’re adding a modern luggage conveyer though,”

…it’s only for true, born, bermudians though

  11. Aishah says:

OMG! Why pay to go out in search of entertainment. Just reading SOME comments is entertaining in itself. On a serious note. Do the luggage donators have to donate and take the luggage to the donation resurrects? Really!

  12. Missing something says:

Why don’t they offer to borrow luggage with an agreement to replace any that they damage? They can tag bags so owners can claim them when the test is complete. Simple pics beforehand can prove whether they cause any additional damage to the bags. I guess I am missing the reason they need to keep the bags forever.
