August 25, 2019

The Bermuda volleyball team continued their strong showing in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association tournament taking place in Antigua and Barbuda, defeating Saba in straight sets.

The organisation’s match report said, “Bermuda continued the straight sets margins of victories, by blanking Saba 3-0 [25- 7, 25-6, 25- 8], to register their second win in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association [ECVA] Under-20 Female Volleyball Tournament, here at the YMCA Sporting Complex.

“While it was Bermuda’s second win, it was third loss on the trot. Bermuda finished the preliminary round with a 1:2 win/loss ratio, while Saba ended winless.

“Nathalie Gazzard and Morgan Kempe, both had 10 points to their names, to be joint leading scorers for Bermuda. On the other side of the court, the best scorer for Saba was Zain Vorswijk with 2 points. Bermuda won on Spikes 20-3 and Serves 21-2. Saba helped Bermuda’s cause by committing 33 errors, whereas Bermuda recorded 16.”

Bermuda’s Head Coach- Gary LeBlanc, whilst accepting his team’s second victory as a plus to their moral, acknowledged that the key is the semi-finals, saying. “Now the real volleyball starts… All the teams have figured each other out, and hopefully if we play the game we came to play, we will come out with a win in the semi –finals.”

“Overall, we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into, so in the first match, we learned something about ourselves; the second match we tried to fix what we learned in the first match, then we tried to execute and fine tune in the third match”.

Team captain Ashley Horseman stated, “We just have to continue to play the game we know how to play and minimise our errors and really put forth our best in the semi-final.”
