BWS: Tropical Depression Erin “Not A Threat”

[Updated] Tropical Storm Erin is a “potential threat to Bermuda”, the Bermuda Weather Service said today, with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs forecast to be 378 nm to the WNW at 6pm today [Aug 28] with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 500 AM EDT [0900 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Erin was located near latitude 32.5 North, longitude 72.4 West. Erin is moving toward the north-northwest near 6 mph [9 km/h]. The cyclone is expected to turn northward later today then north-northeastward early Thursday morning with an increase in forward speed.

“Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph [65 km/h] with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening is possible today, but then gradually weaken Thursday as it completes a transition to an extratropical cyclone. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles [165 km] from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb [29.68 inches].”

Update 5.12pm: The Bermuda Weather Service says that Erin has been downgraded to a tropical depression and “is not a threat to Bermuda at this time.”
