Family Centre To Have Booth At Pride Event

August 28, 2019

“Pride is a celebratory time for the LGBTQI+ community and supporters alike. It is also a time to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable world for everyone,” Executive Director of the Family Centre, Martha Dismont said.

A  Family Centre spokesperson said, “Bermuda Pride 2019 will hold its first ever LGBTQI+ Pride celebration on Saturday, August 31st under the theme of ‘We Belong’. The Pride celebration is a time when all the colors of the rainbow permeate the streets in promotion of love and acceptance.

“Having a Pride event in our own local community provides LGBTQI+ individuals in Bermuda with an opportunity to embrace their true selves and advocate for themselves and others. Worldwide, the LGBTQI+ community continues to face social, economic and personal challenges. Harassment and discrimination are commonly experienced in the LGBTQI+ community which can be challenging to navigate as a young person or as a family.

“Family Centre services are open to all children between the ages of 4 and 18 years and their families, regardless of race, creed, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, ethnicity, cultural background, linguistic preference, or any other matter covered by the Bermuda Human Rights Act.

Family Centre Director of Services, Dr. Sandy De Silva said, ”Family Centre is a therapeutic resource for all families in Bermuda who need social and emotional support and we are proud to be inclusive. We believe in the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing for everyone, including the LGBTQI+ community and their loved ones.’

“For many individuals and families, this is a reprieve from the daily challenges that many LGBTQI+ individuals experience. It is a way to provide support and encouragement to those who are in need of support and acceptance.”

Martha Dismont, Executive Director of Family Centre stated, “Pride is a celebratory time for the LGBTQI+ community and supporters alike. It is also a time to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable world for everyone. We celebrate the partnerships that we have formed based upon this shared core value of desired well-being for all.”

Family Centre noted that they “will have an information table at the Pride celebration on August 31st for anyone who has questions about what we do and how to access our services.”
