With Bermuda’s first ever Pride Parade set to take place on Saturday [Aug 31], tennis legend Martina Navratilova has tweeted in support of the event, telling everyone to “have fun.”

Ms. Navratilova — who won 59 Grand Slam titles, including 9 Wimbledon singles championships; 167 singles and 177 doubles championships — was responding to a tweet from Tony Brannon, when she said “Have fun, we got your back.”

Known for not only being one of the best tennis players of all time, Ms. Navratilova is also well known for being one of the first major sports stars to publicly identify as gay back in the 1980s.

“Martina was the first legitimate superstar who literally came out while she was a superstar,” said Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women’s Sports Foundation told ESPN.

“She exploded the barrier by putting it on the table. She basically said this part of my life doesn’t have anything to do with me as a tennis player. Judge me for who I am.”

A spokesperson previously said, “Pride in the Park takes place at Victoria Park on Saturday, August 31st. It is designed to be a fun, family friendly event, and is open to anyone who believes in the inherent worth of all people, and wishes to celebrate Bermuda’s LGBTQI+ people in a positive and affirming space.

“This year’s theme is ‘We Belong’. It has been chosen to signify that it is time for Bermuda’s LGBTQI+ people to publicly and unapologetically assert their citizenship in their homeland.”
