After being told he would be remanded into custody, 31-year-old Howard Ascento attempted to escape from the court room, however he was detained by the police before he was able to exit the court building.

A police spokesperson said, “Quick action by a member of the Bermuda Police Service today thwarted an escape attempt from the Magistrates’ Court.

31-year-old Howard Ascento was in court for a charge related to breaching a domestic violence protection order.

“Upon learning that he would be remanded into custody, Mr. Ascento vaulted the secure holding area and ran from the court room, pushing past a police officer,” the police explained

“However, a second police officer pursued and detained him before he was able to exit the court building.

“The 31-year-old was handed over to Department of Corrections’ staff to be taken to the Westgate Correctional Facility.

“He is expected to reappear in court in due course.”
