Christian Science Society Thanksgiving Service

November 27, 2019

The Christian Science Society of Bermuda will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day service tomorrow [Nov 28] at 5.30pm at Sunshine League House at 27 King Street in Pembroke.

A spokesperson said, “The Christian Science Society of Bermuda will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day service on Thursday, November 28 at 5.30pm at Sunshine League House at 27 King Street in Pembroke. The Christian Science Society has held a Thanksgiving service every year for the past 60 years.

“Even though Thanksgiving is a US holiday, we are all keenly aware of the importance of giving thanks for the smallest of blessings. The service is our expression of gratitude in support of our community. We have been able to demonstrate ‘supply’, caring for others, and healing through our confidence in God’s great love.

“For this we are infinitely grateful, and we believe that today, more than ever before, we must share this sense of God’s love with our community for healing, and for hope.

“The service consists of readings from the King James Version of the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, Science & Health with Key to Scriptures, by the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. The service includes hymn singing and a solo. There will also be the opportunity for the congregation to give testimonies of gratitude for blessings.

“The Christian Science Church has, in the past year and a half, opened a new Reading Room at 6 Dundonald Street for the public, with a quiet place for study and contemplation, as well as a place where you can find authorized books and periodicals on Christian Science. Sunday Services are at 11.00am every Sunday at Sunshine League House and includes a Sunday School for children up to the age of 20 years.

“Christian Science is often confused with Scientology, and it is important to note that there is no correlation at all. Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1869, and is the ‘Science of Christianity’, teaching us how to live as Christ Jesus lived in the most practical way possible. It is an ‘irresistible power for good in today’s distraught world-’ according to L. Ivimy Gwalter, former teacher and president of the Mother Church in Boston MA.

“The public is invited to attend the service, and for more information, please call 332-6030 or 735-2623.”

Mark Twain had quite a bit to say about Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Scientists.

“There isn’t anything so grotesque or so incredible that the average human being can’t believe it. At this very day there are thousands upon thousands of Americans of average intelligence who fully believe in “Science and Health,” although they can’t understand a line of it, and who also worship the sordid and ignorant old purloiner of that gospel — Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy, who they do absolutely believe to be a member, by adoption, of the Holy Family, and on the way to push the Savior to third place and assume occupancy of His present place, and continue that occupancy during the rest of eternity.”

“His daily gifts of mercy, grace and abundance”: What about the untold millions dying in the Third World through lack of water and preventable disease? What is ‘He’ doing for them? Why on earth do people still believe this stuff? smdh.
