‘Resolve The Radar System’s Technical Issues’

November 14, 2019

The Bermuda Airport Authority’s recently upgraded Doppler Weather Radar System has “suffered numerous outages” since July 2019, and they have informed the manufacturer “that the performance of the weather radar system is unacceptable.”

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Airport Authority’s recently upgraded Doppler Weather Radar System has suffered numerous outages since commissioning in July 2019. There have now been seven unplanned outages. Most outages were due to a hardware component failure.

“The Airport Authority has notified the manufacturer Leonardo Germany that the performance of the weather radar system is unacceptable.”

Bermuda Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer, Lester Nelson said, “The system has failed to meet design performance standards and our expectations, which is disappointing given the full due diligence, time and effort by our team and our obligation to deliver value for the public on the weather radar project.”

Mr. Nelson added, “We continue to work with Leonardo Germany to identify and resolve the radar system’s technical issues to ensure that the radar is available for at least 95% of the system’s 15-year life.”

“Leonardo Germany is a global technology leader in weather radar systems. The Airport Authority asks the public for its patience while we work to improve the reliability of the weather radar system. We will continue to provide updates as we resolve this challenge,” Mr. Nelson said.

“The upgraded weather radar replaced the original system installed in 2004, which by 2017 had become increasingly unreliable and was reaching the end of its useful life.

“Following a competitive procurement, Leonardo Germany was selected to carry out the upgrade at the Cooper’s Island site at a total project cost of approximately $2 million. The weather radar system remains under the manufacturer’s warranty.”
