Work To Rule To Impact Garbage Collection

November 24, 2019

Workers in the Waste Management section have instituted a Work to Rule which will impact garbage collection services, the Ministry has confirmed.

A spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works and the Department of Works and Engineering advises the public that sanitation workers in the Waste Management section have instituted a Work to Rule which will impact garbage collection services.

“As part of our mandate to provide reliable garbage collection services, we are committed to working with the BIU and its members to resolve the issues raised and restore service as soon as possible. Dialog is ongoing and a meeting is scheduled tomorrow to address the concerns.

“Bermudians from all walks of life depend on the public garbage collection and we are determined to resolve this impasse and restore full service to the island.

“The Department of Works and Engineering apologizes for the inconvenience and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

“In the interim, we encourage the public to use the free public drop off which is open from 7 am to 7 pm daily.”

  1. Ringmaster says:

Recycling is privatized, so way past time to privatize garbage collection. There was no collection Friday so now the garbage has been sitting for 3 days.
Why should we have to take it to Tynes Bay and do their job, when we have paid taxes to have it collected? Where is Minister “Mr fixit” Burch?

    • sandgrownan says:

He’s too busy getting things done.

The greatest myth perpetrated on the Bermudian electorate!

      • hmmm says:

Ok UBPoba voter go back to the drawing board like a kid.

        • sandgrownan says:

So, are things better or worse after 18 years of PLP status quo?

How’s the economy? Schools, Buses, trash collections? How is business confidence? Taxation?

Come on…the PLP have all that political capital to GET THINGS DONE.. They can make real, demonstrable progress. They can spin the message so everyone will lap it up.

Why won’t they do that? Why can’t they do that?

          • Anbu says:

He/she wont answer that. They never do. Because they know theyd have to lie to themselves. Theyd much rather have their beloved ministers do that instead.

  2. Stevie says:

    Time for snap election.

    • Dude says:

With your snap election, what team exactly are you expecting to sub in…?

Can’t blame the Governing party for the lack of a full and ready compliment by the opposition…

  3. Question says:

This explains the garbage problem last week. Furbert should have been sorting this out, not doing useless ‘press conferences’ every day.

    • trufth says:

This is Furbert throwing his toys out of the pram because he’s mad.
2 press conferences and then this.

Remind me again who runs this country?

  4. Southampton says:

As per usual. The union holds Bermuda hostage.

  5. Darren says:

Why doesn’t lieutenant colonel Burch just order them back to work. Oh yeah, that’s because he doesn’t have any powers

  6. MB says:

    Here we go again
Tell me, what have all these strikes done for the workers?
I see foreigners in more jobs than ever that’ used to be Bermudians.
So clearly BIU not having desired effect is it?
Trash collection just like bus service is a service
that the least well off suffer most from and are impacted most from
and hurt most from when it’s withdrawn by groups of
workers who don’t like the fact THEY too have to move
with the times and also have to accept change. And hello
The rat infestation was just made far worse by your selfish actions.
The civil service is overblown as it is and all they like bus drivers are doing are talking themselves out of jobs… so dont cry when trash is privatized one day because you would not work with your bosses to cut costs

  7. Things a Gwan says:

24-12. They say. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. And boy are we getting it good.

Of course there will be a meeting tomorrow. Couldn’t possibly take care of it today. Or tomorrow Evening.

  8. JohnBoy says:

Nice of them to tell us now that all our trash is piling up outside.

  9. Paul says:

So do we put our garbage out for Monday collection ? the only ones that benifit from this work to rule are the RATS !!

  10. Not exactly says:

I thought the implementation of a once per week schedule removed the need for overtime so work to rule should not affect people’s timely trash collection. We’ve got enough rats now as it is because of that, why can’t the union just do their job instead of withholding services taxpayers are already paying dearly for and quietly support their leader interfering in elections?

  11. John E. Thorne says:

    Where is the Peoples Campaign?
In the meantime, please drop off your trash at the BIU.

  12. Smith says:

Please give these senatation workers what they want. Areas are already being invaded with rats, cats and chickens.
I would hope a resolve will be made sooner then later.
I have faith in our government and union to do whats right.

    • saud says:

“I have faith in our government and union to do whats right.”

      LOL, you’re a fool!

  13. rubberman says:

So from two collections a week to one, and they still aren’t happy. Burch needs to get a grip on his “hard working Bermudians”, instead of concentrating on getting rid of guest workers.

  14. cpm says:

This work to rule has gone on for how many years?

  15. cpm says:

“Bermudians from all walks of life” we all pay our taxes and expect services from the Government

  16. Moojun says:

What’s the issue? Why is there a work to rule? Why didn’t Chris F mention any of this when he had the Mic a few days ago?

    • @1 says:

why are workers going above the call of duty when they work under contract of duty? If they are working to rule that is legal, they should work only to rule and any overtime is optional not mandated. If more staff are needed to fulfill quotas then they should have enough workers without a threat of working to rule, that should be normal to do the expected days work, without compromising.

      • Anbu says:

Fact. Most gov depts abuse their overtime “priviledge” cause thats what it is. Weve all seen it. Of course they will deny it. Someone explain to me how u have six guys filling a hole and it still cant be done on company time?

  17. MM says:

The 7am to 7pm time frame is too narrow under these circumstances, perhaps remain open to 8pm’

  18. Confused says:

Very confused with this as the unions healthy relationship with PLP and election of BPSU peoples campaign Senator was supposed to mean friends friendship family and happiness so why they on work to rule?

  19. kevin says:

We are down to one trash pick up a week surely the work can be completed in a regular scheduled work week. Chris Furbert wants to get involved in the political rhetoric maybe he needs to spend more time on his own job. How have we slumped to this level of inefficiency

  20. sandgrownan says:

So much winning from the PLP. So much winning.

  21. #CLUELESS says:

Amazing, are there circles are starting to collide now.
In todays paper, our rich govt, is looking to hire someone to tell them how to cut back on there spending, is it just me.
    #DREAMERS

  22. Joe Bloggs says:

Why is there a work to rule? Did someone do something wrong or is it simply so workers have time to prepare for Thanksgiving?

What does the work to rule mean? Will trash collection will go like recyclable collection and be down from twice a week to once every two weeks?

    • Southampton says:

It means that now the union workers will be able to collect double and triple time in their pay checks. GET RID OF THE UNION .

    • @1 says:

good questions. work to rule sounds like working according to contract which sounds about right. Any extras is overtime. I guess…

  23. Really says:

So, CF has the mike not once but twice last week, Do you think he waited till C-17 was a done deal to make this announcement ?

  24. bluenose says:

How will we notice the difference?

  25. puzzled says:

    Been this way since 1965

  26. Garbage Gate says:

Here’s a new “Gate” brought to you by the Government and the BIU.

    You are all welcome!

    LOL!

  27. Triangle Drifter says:

To put the trash out on the day or not to put the trash out. That is the question. To most it won’t matter. They will put it out no matter the day as usual. As long as it is out of their house.

  28. PANGAEA says:

We should all continue to put our trash out as usual on the road side.

    DO NOT BURN IT !

If they want to work to rule so be it.

After a ten days or so the trash should smell ripe.

Ammonia will keep the rats away.

Industrial action is always a failed solution, until the side down around the table and negotiate.

I caught 12 rats and 3 mice this year so far using glue traps. Stick a tie down line to the glue side to prevent unauthorized departures.

  29. One Who Escaped says:

If they actually do work to rule, the service should, technically, get better!

  30. concern_bda says:

    Here is my observation.
Previously we had twice a week garbage collection.
This was reduced to once a week for various reasons, the main reason being cost. The government is now saving money on once a week collection.

From what I have read 5 people are no longer there, and they have hired 5 temporary workers because they cannot afford full time staff.

How is that a portion of the money saved from twice a week collection cannot be used to ensure that government have the proper staffing levels in the waste management section???

  31. aceboy says:

I can take my own trash to Tynes Bay. But if I do I want a refund for services I no longer need.

    • Why? says:

Exactly! I want my REFUND Too! I pay taxes for collection. My car has been down for an extended time , and my
Trash WILL get put to the community Pile in my neighborhood on the correct day. Ratz or no Ratz. Gov’t, fix this miserable one day collection. It does Not work in this Subtropical environment, hence , the terrible duplication of the
Rats, maggots and flies. We have more Rats on this island now than people! I see them scurrying every week, on my job, in my neighborhood. No , Minister, I don’t feel people are ‘ Happy ‘ with the one day collection as we have been made to believe over the past year. Vector Control has been called, but not shown up. They must be pulling
Their hair out with the RATS! Why must the quality of life continue to go backwards for us Islanders year after year?
      Rhetorical question.

      • saud says:

“Why must the quality of life continue to go backwards for us Islanders year after year?”

You get what you vote for

  32. lol says:

PUT YOUR WET TRASH IN YOUR CAR AND TAKE IT TYNES BAY – Gubmit

    • No thanks says:

No thanks! It can stay on the curb! As long as it’s off my property I don’t give a sh$t!

  33. Comfortably numb says:

Can anyone explain the difference between work to rule and simply not work? Just driven from Barnes Corner to Somerset Village and not one bag of trash has been picked up. Where is the outrage from the People’s Campaign, Reverend Genevieve et al?

    • Toodle-oo says:

No body or group knows better how to manipulate the government (no matter who they are) than the BIU
Trash is now piling up in the east from non collection last week and now in the west as you correctly point out.
The staff of the trash collection department will get paid no matter what , whether they pick up or not. Now wait to see them rack up massive overtime once they get back to doing what they are normally paid for.
