BMRA Youth Racers Fundraising For UK Trip

December 12, 2019

Youth racers from the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Association are fundraising for an overseas training intensive in England, which is set to take place next year.

The group first participated in an international training weekend at the Willow Springs International Raceway in California in April 2018, and in 2020, they are travelling across England to maximise on further opportunities for advancement in the sport.

The group of racers — aged 10 to 14 — will participate in race training, cross-training and educational experiences.

The young road racers include Sheun Simmons, Jediah Cumbermack, Kymaree Pitt and Daente Burgess. England-based Bermudian racer, Aeziah Divine, will also join the group for the week-long advancement experience.

Kristin Divine, who is coordinating the experience, said “I am thrilled to have a number of the youth racers who attended our training weekend in California last year so eager to take advantage of European-based opportunities for further development. Like Aeziah, some of the racers are considering potential race careers abroad so offering them insights into pathways for progression will be invaluable for them.”

The group is holding a combined car wash and bake sale this Saturday, December 14th at the RUBiS Paget Service Station from 8 am – 4 pm. The pricing structure is $10 for bikes, $20 for cars, and $30 for trucks.

Baked goods will be on sale, including popcorn, various cakes, cookies, glass candy, trail mix, and more. The racers and their families are hoping to attract members of the public that are eager to have their cars and bikes looking good for the holidays.

Shannon Simmons, the father of 14-year-old Sheun Simmons, who attended the California trip and will be joining the 2020 experience, said: “The 2018 California trip opened Sheun’s mind and vision of racing.

“I’ve seen growth with his ability to concentrate more since the first trip and the knowledge he gained is long-lasting. With his new vision and the tips he learned from the trip, he was able to win first place in his race class for the 2019 BMRA race season.”

“By joining the upcoming training intensive, Sheun and his peers will be given a chance to develop more and move into the field of international racing. His ultimate goal is to begin GP racing which would open up more international opportunities for him.”

Simmons hopes to use the trip to network with other racers that could offer their knowledge on the best channels to progress through the various European championships.

The group will hold a special movie screening of Doolittle next month at Specialty Cinema and a golf tournament in February at Ocean View Golf Club to raise funds to support the trip. A temporary fundraising license, #T2083, has been secured for their fundraising.
