Man Assaulted At Warwick Post Office

December 17, 2019

[Updated] A man was assaulted at the Warwick Post Office, with three males punching the 22-year-old man in front of customers on Monday afternoon.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 4pm Monday, December 16th police officers responded to a reported assault at the Warwick Post Office on Middle Road.

“Circumstances of the incident are that prior to police arrival, a 22-year-old man – said to be a Warwick resident – walked through the front entrance of the post office.

“A short time later three other males walked in, with a fourth male standing at the front door. The three males then punched the 22-year-old man in front of astonished customers before all four males quickly left the building.

“Apparently the 22-year-old man had no visible injuries following the brief assault.

“The suspects are described as four brown complexioned males wearing dark coloured jackets and black helmets. It is believed that they left the area on separate motorcycles.

“The Bermuda Police Service is also aware that video footage of the incident is circulating as inquiries continue.

“Any witnesses that have not already come forward – or any members of the public with relevant information – are encouraged to call the main police telephone number 295-0011 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 as soon as possible.”

Update 4.05pm: Minister for the Cabinet Office Wayne Furbert said, “Although this incident is indeed deeply regrettable, I am relieved to learn that no Post Office staff or customers were injured.

“I would also like to commend the staff members who were on duty at the time and who acted promptly and appropriately, despite being understandably shaken. Security is being reviewed to ensure the maximum safety of our staff and customers going forward.

“I would like to offer my support to the Bermuda Police Service and echo their call for any witnesses that have not already come forward – or any members of the public with relevant information – to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 as soon as possible.”

Update 7.03pm: MP Neville Tyrrell said, “The Warwick Post Office is a place of stability and security for our seniors and so many members of our community. Violence anywhere in our community is unacceptable, but in a space used by so many of our Warwick seniors and mothers, it is especially unacceptable.

“We support the Bermuda Police Service and their call for witnesses to step forward and the Warwick MPs commit to meeting with the Minister for the Cabinet Office as they review security at the Post Office and join him in expressing our support for the staff and customers negatively impacted by this unacceptable act of violence.”

They all need to get a job and find something constructive to do. PLP is in power now, they should be able to find jobs for them surely.

LOL, I just watched the video, that was pathetic. The assaulted man had no visible injuries because the three assailants couldn’t punch their way out of a paper bag.

The attack looked as stupid and weak as the perpetrators mentality I’m sure.As much as I wish this incident never took place I am grateful no guns were involved.I hope the harsh sentences being administered by the courts is becoming a deterrent for some.

I think that officers on footpatrol, would help to a bit of a deterrent from time to time, 20 to 30 minute walkabout..the post office, the pre-school, the Hub, the liquor store, the pharmacy, the gas station..switch it up as you wish.this habit of drive in and drive out 20 seconds later don,t phase anybody. We ourselves don,t know the reason for the attack..but it is clear some folks are getting brazen..On sunday, some people got violent at a football game in somerset, an escort was needed for the team. Both situations maybe a one off, or they might suggest a trend. Other business communities outside of the City could also benefit from more patrols as well as residents.
