“At the Ministry of Health, we share this goal with you. The benefits of physical activity are numerous and undeniable. In combination with healthy eating, it can help prevent a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease and stroke – which are leading causes of death on the island.

“Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bones, aids in muscle and joint development and decreases the risk of obesity.”

“The 2014 Steps to A Well Bermuda Survey found that 27 per cent of those surveyed do not meet the current World Health Organization recommendations of physical activity for health and that 75 per cent were overweight or obese. Events such as these help to foster an awareness of the importance of exercise and hopefully will inspire others to lead more active lifestyles.”

Minister Wilson closed her remarks by welcoming the overseas competitors to Bermuda and wished all athletes luck in the competition.
