Police Rugby Duckett Memorial Rugby Matches

January 10, 2020

The annual Police Rugby Duckett Memorial Rugby matches will take place this Saturday at National Sports Center.

“Both Men’s and Ladies’ Police Rugby teams are preparing for demanding matches when they compete against the best of the rest in Bermuda’s oldest rugby event,” a spokesperson said.

“The annual games are played in memory of George Duckett, a former Commissioner of Police who was assassinated in 1972. Duckett was a popular, larger than life Commissioner who had a commanding presence and stood at 6’5” tall and was well known as an ardent rugby fan.

“In 1973, the Bermuda Police Rugby Section commenced an Annual Memorial Game which is the longest running Memorial Game in Bermuda.

“The Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club will play the Bermuda Rugby Football Unions Presidents XV, while the Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club 2nd XV will play the Bermuda Rugby Football Unions Vice President’s XV. The Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club Ladies First and Second teams will play select sides from the other ladies teams.

“Serving Officers, former colleagues, ‘Faded Blues’ and rugby fans across the Island are welcome to continue to show their respect by attending this BPS sporting tradition.

The Schedule:

  • 12:30 Kick-off, 15 min per half – Women’s BPRFC 2nd Team vs The Rest
  • 1:15 Kick-off, 30 min per half, rolling subs – Men’s BPRFC Second XV vs BRFU Vice President’s XV
  • 2:45 Kick-off, 15 min per half – Women’s BPRFC 1st Team vs The Rest
  • 3:30 Kick-off, 40 min per half – Men’s BPRFC First XV vs BRFU President’s XV

“This is a very important day for the club,” says Men’s captain Stephan Smit, “as it acknowledges all past Police members that worked tirelessly on and off the pitch to keep the Blue Family tradition alive.

“The Men’s First XV will look to go back-to-back building on the momentum from last year. Although this is a hotly contested match, it is the Men’s Second XV match that will get the crowds pouring in. The Faded Blues will be taking on a team filled with Legends from all the other clubs.”

“This season marks the club’s 60th anniversary, and winning is the best way to make it memorable” said Ladies captain Meagan Jackson. “The Police Ladies 1st Team will be looking to come back from a narrow defeat last year to cap an already successful start to the 2019/2020 season. Lookout for another stellar performance from Royal Blue Erica McArthur in the Ladies 2nd team game.”
