January 13, 2020

The Ministry of National Security is reminding interested individuals that the deadline for submissions for the Live. Love. Life. Anti-Violence Art Exhibition is January 31 – February 10, 2020.

Late last year, the Minister of National Security Wayne Caines announced a partnership with Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art to host the anti-violence awareness initiative.

The exhibition will be held from February 28 – March 6, 2020 and is open to all interested individuals [there is no age limit]. Submissions should be created around the theme, interpretation and/or concept of reducing violence in the community.

Minister Caines said today, “Since we announced our exhibition, we’ve been very encouraged with the level interest and feedback from the community. People truly have a desire to be creative and this initiative has presented a purposeful opportunity for them to share their talents.”

“For much of 2019, we enjoyed low levels of crime and anti-social behaviour. Unfortunately though, in the lead up to the Christmas holidays, we saw some instances of violence and anti-social behaviour at some establishments around the island. This is regrettable.

“We thank the Bermuda Police Service and the Gang Violence Reduction Team led by Pastor Leroy Bean for their efforts to curb the anti-social behavior over the holiday season. However we believe that there are multiple ways to address this issue.

“And our Ministry remains committed to introducing programmes aimed at reducing violence. The Live. Love. Life. Anti-Violence Art Exhibition seeks to engage our community through creativity. The upcoming Masterworks Exhibition will provide an opportunity for our community, especially our young people to express themselves through a number of artistic mediums.

“The arts can provide an outlet for self-expression, and this exhibition is part of our continuing outreach efforts to raise awareness about the importance of reducing violence and anti-social behaviour. We want people to channel their energy into being creative.”

“The Ministry advised that cash prizes totaling $9,000 will be awarded for outstanding art in the following categories:”

  • Traditional Painting;
  • Mixed Media;
  • Digital Media;
  • Animation; and
  • Photography
