TLC Group To Host Info Session On Digital Safety

January 27, 2020

The TLC Group will be hosting an information session titled ‘Digital Safety for Families’ on Wednesday [Jan 29] from 5.30pm to 7.00pm at Bermuda College.

A spokesperson said, “Many parents use the internet without thinking that they could easily become a victim of a cyber attack so tons do not take steps to protect themselves and also, do not make the effort to protect their children.”

Internet Matters Ambassador and psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos said, “It’s essential that parents set-up age-appropriate parental controls on their child’s device to ensure they have a safe place to be online.

“Building online boundaries should be no different to any other life stage. Just like teaching a child to ride a bike, you slowly remove the training wheels and eventually let them go.

“Parental controls are the same – parents can lower the settings as their child matures to ensure they’re not exposed to content that is inappropriate to their age group. These easy-to-follow guides should help give parents the confidence to get to grips with their child’s technology and stay on top of what they’re doing online.”

The spokesperson said, “Children aren’t the only group at risk. We all are, including 50+ population that work, play and socialise on the internet. More and more seniors have grown comfortable being online and having a presence on social media.

“This is a great way for them to stay connected to friends and family and be aware of what’s going on in the world. However, they may not be as savvy when it comes to protecting themselves online from fraudsters and fraudsters use the Internet to scam unsuspecting consumers. If an offer, email, or message sounds too good to be true or just seems plain fishy, go with your gut and do some additional checking.

“Join our upcoming course, Digital Safety for Families, to learn more tips on how you can protect yourself and your loved ones online.

“With the constant use and dependency on Smart technology, does Bermuda’s community know enough about the cyber world and cyber-criminal behaviour to protect themselves & family? To help families better understand how to protect themselves, their children and the 50+ population, The TLC Group is hosting a talk on Digital Safety for Families.

“Educators, parents, community and child activists are invited and encouraged to join the conversation at Bermuda College on 29th July from 5:30-7 pm. We will discuss tips and advice on how to prepare, protect and advise your children/students on safer internet use, social pressures of social media, appropriate sharing and protection of personal data, and how to respond to cyber bullying, cyber attacks and data breaches.
