Audio: Singer Celebrates Romance With Song

February 14, 2020

Local singer and songwriter Valerie Sherwood has recorded a new version of her song One Heart and One Mind, which she wrote in 1984 to perform at the wedding of her friends Alan and Ruth Marquardt, who are celebrating 35 years of marriage this year.

The guitar ballad version of the song features music and lyrics by Ms. Sherwood and was arranged and produced by John Woolridge, who is getting set to perform in the Bermuda Festival, opening for Dianne Reeves on Friday, March 6.

Ms. Sherwood said, “Alan Marquardt, local photographer and well-known diver, taught three ladies to scuba dive, not knowing that one of them would become his wife. The four friends traveled to the Red Sea in December 1984.”

“Alan and Ruth fell in love on the boat, Lady Jenny III, which inspired me to write One Heart and One Mind, which I later sang at their wedding.

“The song must be timeless, as Alan and Ruth have raised two daughters, and this year celebrated 35 years of marriage.

“Alan provided over 100 of his amazing Bermuda slides to match Colours of Bermuda, my most popular song, arranged and produced by the very talented John Woolridge of Just Platinum studios.

“This Valentine’s Day, I salute Alan and Ruth with this guitar ballad version of One Heart and One Mind, which has finally been recorded.”
