OBA’s Smith: ‘Police Budget Must Be Protected’

February 20, 2020

“Following the recent spate of shootings, the police budget must be protected if they are to be able to combat gang crime,” Shadow National Security Minister Ben Smith said today.

Mr. Smith said, “Recently, I expressed my concerns about reports reaching me that the Bermuda Police Service budget could be cut by as much as $4m.

“I called on the Minister to say this was not true, but the only response was from a Government spokesperson who said: ‘The Budget is being finalised and will be unveiled on Budget Day.’

“If these shootings continue, I fear it is only a matter of time before someone is killed and the BPS must have access to every available resource, including adequate financial support.”

Money allocated to the Police does not solve the issue.

I think he has a point – these shootings are ripping at the fabric of society, they have to be brought under control and the police cannot do that effectively if they do not have adequate resources

      • watching says:

despite this recent resurgence shootings are down overall markedly. the resurgence has nothing to do with finances or resources.

        • Question says:

So other than the shootings and gun crime everything’s great.

      • Lewis says:

You sound like a puppet. If the police have more or less funding it will not change crime and that’s a fact.

      • Law says:

Hello, any shooting is ripping the fabric of society. And, lets not any assault on any person is also ripping society. There has been a number of stabbings recently if correct. Also, the front line for anything illegal is at our ports of entry. You don’t hear Smith supporting the cut to Customs budget. The department is said to be over 40 officers short. What happens to any establish when you have a shortage of resources?
