Butterfield Invites Applications For Scholarships

March 9, 2020

The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited is accepting applications for its undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships. The deadline for both scholarships is Friday 27 March 2020.

Undergraduate Scholarship

A spokesperson said, “The Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to a Bermudian student commencing, or already pursuing, an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited university.

“This Scholarship has been awarded every year since 1978 in honour of Butterfield’s late Chairman, former Rhodes Scholar, Sir Harry D. Butterfield, whose distinguished career in public and business life was dedicated to the betterment of Bermuda and Bermudians. The award has an annual value of $25,000, tenable for up to four years in full-time study.

“Sadia Wilson, Butterfield’s current scholar, attends the University of Bristol where she is in her second year of a three year Bachelor of Science degree in cellular molecular medicine. On completion, Ms Wilson plans to pursue a career as a dental surgeon.

Ms Wilson is keen to offer advice to other students considering higher education, “My advice would be to apply to as many available scholarships as you can, and be aware that you don’t always have to have the highest grades of all the applicants. Interviewing for a scholarship can be very intimidating, try to be confident, have courage and passion for the degree you are interested in.”

Ms Wilson’s studies are proving useful she says, “My cellular and molecular medicine studies have exposed me to extensive lab work and medical information. This sometimes allows me to help friends and family treat their ailments or set them straight on medical myths such as the difference between a viral or bacterial infection. Currently, I am helping them understand the coronavirus and the importance of keeping it contained.”

2019 Scholar Barisse Griffin, from The Bahamas, is currently enrolled at King’s College in London, England where she is pursuing a master’s degree in disasters, adaption and development management.

Ms Griffin says, “Throughout the Caribbean we are experiencing unfamiliar climate patterns, such as prolonged and repeated droughts, intense rainfall, and rising sea levels. These conditions disrupt our marine environments and coastal areas resulting in pollutants and debris drifting into the sea, and rising seas consuming our beaches.” Barisse’s goal is to develop strategies that will improve crisis response throughout The Bahamas and the Caribbean, helping to combat natural disasters and protect the islands.
