Covid-19: BFA Suspend Football Season

March 18, 2020

The Bermuda Football Association [BFA] announced the suspension of “all football inclusive of Youth, Senior and National Academy / Teams matches and activities” due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Football Association [BFA] is very much cognizant of the current situation involving the Covid-19 [coronavirus] and the impact on our communities and the actions needed to address the spread of the virus.

“During its monthly meeting the Executive Council committed to suspend all football inclusive of Youth, Senior and National Academy / Teams matches and activities. The Executive Council will reassess the status of the Covid-19 pandemic on March 31st. In the interim the Competition Committee will draft plans to address the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

“The Bermuda Football Association recognizes its role in the community and understands the importance of football in the lives of many people. However, we stand in solidarity with all responsible organizations in helping to reduce the spread of the virus by suspending football while the situation is being addressed.

“We wish everyone all the very best and encourage the adherence to the recommendations to safeguard the spread of the virus.”

The association should simply terminate the season – clubs being promoted from the 1st Division have been determined – Bvcc will be relegated from the premier div and it would be prudent if no other team be relegated this season – the ten team premier div would return to that status by relegating 3 teams at the completion of the 20/21 season.

Further – the FA cup can be played at the beginning of next season and possibly at that point with more than 50 fans in attendance. Note that the NSC is now closed.

Players and coaches must be protected and by not terminating the season clubs are forcing players and coaches to train together to remain competitive. This places these individuals in harms way which is both uncaring, unwise and irresponsible.

Leadership is required and the players and coaches should demand it.
