Police: ‘Individuals Continue To Flout Orders’

April 12, 2020

“Some individuals continue to flout these orders and venture out for no genuine reason and without approved exemption,” the police said, adding that some of the excuses include “I am taking hot cross buns to my daughter” and “I have to feed the feral cats.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said, “Sadly, it appears the messages from the Premier about the severity of the situation with which we are now faced, is still not registering with some residents.

“The Government and the Bermuda Police Service, have repeatedly stated that all beaches and parks as well as the railway trails are now closed. Yet people continue to gather at these locations.

“As a reminder, Bermuda is under 24 hour Shelter in Place Orders, with allowances made only for individuals to leave their homes to get essentials such as groceries and medicine or an hour’s exercise between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.

“However, some individuals continue to flout these orders and venture out for no genuine reason and without approved exemption.

“Here a just a few of the excuses we’re faced with when individuals are stopped at the Community Advisory Checkpoints:

  • “It’s just a flu, when is this all going to stop?”
  • “I have to feed the feral cats.”
  • “I am taking hot cross buns to my daughter.”

“Also, individuals are refusing to stop at some checkpoints which are manned by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment only. The BPS advises that the license plate numbers of vehicles which fail to stop at these checkpoints will be recorded and further action taken.

“The BPS is again appealing for good sense to prevail and for residents to stay in their homes.

“As Dr. Cheryl Peek-Ball, the island’s Chief Medical Officer has indicated, the most effective way of avoiding the spread of the COVID-19 disease is to practice social distancing. The best way to do that, is to stay at home and follow the stipulations of the Shelter in Place Orders. Please, let’s all work for and not against each other.”

  1. Oh Well says:

I honestly won’t be surprised if they decide to extend the Shelter In Place for another 2 weeks

    • Portia says:

Nope. You can’t lock people up in their homes forever. It’s not practical. Let the elderly and vulnerable stay in shelter at home, but everyone else needs to go back to work SOON. If Government tries to extend this for 2 more weeks, they will soon have bigger problems on their hands to worry about than the virus.

      • Onion Juice says:

Whats worst then a mass number of your population dying, you sound like that idiot in de White House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Kathy says:

Listen up and listen closely. You will be in lockdown for weeks if not months.

This is not about the elderly. This is about your hospital. Do you use the hospital? If you break your leg and they can’t let you in the door because there are too many COVID-19 patients in there, what are YOU going to do? If you have a heart attack during the peak crisis because the Premier sent everyone back to work, what are YOU going to do?

Do you realise that around the world doctors are having to chose who gets treated and who doesn’t?

The reality is that until Bermuda gets this 100% under control, no one is going back out. So, stay your asses home!

        • Portia says:

Now YOU listen up. Staying home for 2 weeks to flatten the curve is reasonable, being in lockdown for “weeks if not months” as you suggest is completely asinine. The Government CANNOT afford to be sending out checks every week to all of these people who have lost their jobs, they are doing it for 3 months, but it can’t go on indefinitely. The majority of people will NOT require hospitalization because of this virus. And I’ll remind you, that those who’ve lost their jobs have also lost their health insurance. If they get sick how do you expect them to pay for hospital care if they need it? And how do you expect to keep the hospital running with less and less people paying for it? The hospital is more in danger of being underfunded than overwhelmed at this point.

You are delusional if you think Bermuda can get this 100% under control. It is here to stay. There will ALWAYS be cases, every season, even if a vaccine is developed 18 months from now. So you think people should give up their livelihood and freedom for 18 -24 months in hopes of a vaccine that MAY work? Ridiculous!

The most vulnerable such as seniors and immuno-compromised should remain at home for the time being, if YOU want to stay in your house, do so, but the rest of Bermuda should be allowed back at work with reasonable social distancing in place.

          • Mike Hind says:

            Your suggestion will kill people.
            Lots of them.

How are you ok with that?

      • bluenose says:

You, and people who think like you, are a danger to the rest of us. Shame on you!

        • Chris says:

The same could be said about you and your thinking.

      • Question says:

The only way to stop this is to stop the virus from transmitting. Which means no one goes near anyone else. It’s very simple but surprisingly difficult for some people to understand.
        Why is that?

    • Warrior says:

I totally agree. Can someone share if water truckers can deliver water, asking for a neighbor.

    • ruby says:

      So true

  2. Oh no ! says:

I see the premier shutting the island down completely for another 2 weeks. And no essential services, nothing will be able to work

    • Lone_Wolf says:

Unfortunately, that is the only thing that will work here. Saturday I saw a lady rubbing her eye, then picking up a block of cheese and then putting it back for the next person. And all the cheeses are stacked together, so if she was positive, the virus is now on all the cheeses for everyone else to buy. Y’all won’t be happy until everything is shut down. Like I’ve been saying since day one.

  3. Stuart says:

Maybe the Premier should put the island on 24hr lockdown for another 2 weeks since we have some individuals who want to make it harder for the rest of us..

  4. Boston Whaler Owner says:

so BPS expect the feral cats to starve and people going without their hot cross buns?
ya got more chance of hell freezing over

  5. lion says:

It’s people like that who think they can flout the law is what will keep us under lockdown

  6. Bobby says:

There is a very good way of dealing with these people and that is “to lock them up for the duration of the Shelter In Place order”. Don’t bail them until the next court date. That would certainly make them think twice.

    • Human rights says:

Fortunately it still exists that we have some rights left, and your poorly considered idea isn’t a viable one.

      • Chris says:

If not the prisoners rights what about their wardens rights or you ok with letting them get sick as well as the prisoners…?

  7. Onion Juice says:

And now de sun is out these idiots will be on de beach sun bathing, running and walking their dogs.

    • Toodle-oo says:

I see what you’re trying to do there (as usual) but obviously you haven’t been reading the names of the people who’ve gone through the court system for breaking the rules.

  8. Quinton says:

The law needs to be changed that if someone goes out and infects someone else and it is traced back they should get an assault charge and if someone dies, they should be charged with manslaughter.

    • Proof? says:

How would you ever adequately prove that link to satisfy a judge or jury?

What about people who unknowingly goes to the grocery store, on their correct day and at the grocery store they are SUGGESTED to be at (the regulations only suggest which stores you may frequent, they do not mandate) and infects someone?

These people may be stupid, for both going out and being dumb enough to give those excuses, but your idea proves you to be in the same category.

      • Hub says:

        Government got to start
        testingg public

      • Phil Wells says:

The Regulations were amended last week to make it effectively mandatory that you attend the closest store:

        “Amends regulation 3
In regulation 3 of the principal Regulations, at the end of paragraph (2)(a), insert “, subject to compliance with directions (including directions regarding permitted shopping days for categories of persons, and directions as to the location of permitted businesses that a person may visit) published by the Minister of National Security on the website
        http://www.gov.bm/coronavirus”.”

  9. Prison says:

they break the law LOCK THEM UP. Not interested in excuses, If they are not on the approved essential service list they are breaking the law.Take one before the courts and have the judge grow a pair and throw the book at them.As for non stopping vehicles spike strips, better form of egress from checkpoint and if necessary do a pick move on them with a jeep.AHonly prolonging the period and putting us at risk!!

    • Chris says:

Ok but you know that could be a death sentence. The us is releasing prisoners so they dont get it in prison or do those that have been in before this mess no longer have rights. Easy to see your rights being erroded and yall are welcoming it.

  10. enough says:

enough is enough by now99.9% of population know of the shelter in place. Playtimer is OVER !!

  11. Toodle-oo says:

My guess is that we will be going into a 2nd phase of Shelter in place after this one ends , and thanks to these idiots we’ll probably have to do a 3rd as well.

    • sage says:

Let’s not forget that the initial lockdown is directly because the government did not make decisive moves earlier to minimize the importation of exposed individuals, now Joe Public is the bad guy and government are the heroes/saviours.

      • Smilahh says:

        True

      • Mike Hind says:

        Nope. Joe Public is fine.

It’s the bad guys… I.e. the ones putting people at risk, that are the bad guys.

        • sage says:

Like the groups of three adults or families exercising in groups, the grocery shops/pharmacies who allow unmasked customers to shop including the police hierarchy and the “member of the judiciary” who refused to comply for request for ID at a roadblock.

          • Mike Hind says:

            Nice pivot. I’m not playing.

          • Chris says:

Im sorry but do you guys hear yourselves. You realise that eventually there will be maditory vacinations and id cards just to apply for a job. Dont you see where this is going.

  12. Onion Juice says:

    Idiots!!!!!!!!!

    • Sandgrownan says:

      It’s not often I say this…. “ but OJ is correct…”

      Lol

  13. Richard says:

Time to stop playing with them lock um up

  14. trufth says:

The feral cats need to be fed. This is not their fault. Are we feeding the animals at the SPCA? The answer is yes, of course. So please let the feral feeders do their volunteer jobs.

    • Southampton says:

I agree. These poor cats should not suffer because of this. By not feeding them will cause more problems. They will start to dig into our garbage,
      FEED THEM !!!

  15. Feeder says:

We were given official approval to provide the cat feeding service:

    Good afternoon,

As per your request for exemption from 24hr lockdown in your role as Cat feeders – I approve exemption from 24hr lockdown for this purpose.

If/when stopped by a Police Officer, please explain your role, and provide the Officer my name as your authorizing Officer. Alternatively show the Officer this written authority.

    Making Bermuda Safer

  16. Noelle says:

It’s obvious that the grocery stores are the major issue. People still not wearing masks. Standing and walking too close.

  17. Warrior says:

Can someone share if water truckers can deliver, asking for a neighbor.

    • TBB says:

Yes water trucks can deliver if it is an emergency.

  18. Concerned Bermudian says:

Feral cat programs should be granted exemption. It isn’t fair to the cats that have adopted specific eating habits to now be expected to eat on their own.

  19. Alberta says:

Everyday since we have had 6 distancing all the people that walk along Crow Lane are side by side. Some sit in the park near Rance’s. We are at the point where people disobeying the premiere should be heavily fined. Some ignorant, selfis, inconsiderate fools are spoiling it for those of us staying in the house. Stop them now. Also put some kind of mark or sign on houses where people are quarantined to be sure the stay inside. Some people with money probably think they can buy their way out of the situation. This is an equal opportunity disease‼️

    • Money says:

We are the ones with lots of money and only the strong will survive! Natures way of keeping us in line as we have abused the planet too much and it’s is cleaning us up!

      • Chris says:

Nature has nothing to do with this this was man made.

    • Chris says:

Wtf keep it up you will be the first to lose all your rights.

      • Mike Hind says:

You do NOT have the right to put me at risk of dying.

This suspension of right to assemble is a temporary restriction put in place for public safety.

Rattling on about “losing all your rights” is ignorant and insane and dangerous.

  20. Hub says:

    Government got to start
    testingg public

  21. Kathy says:

No doubt it will be months if people can’t stay home. EVERYONE! If everyone stays home the contagious numbers should be coming down, not going up. Simple as that!

    • Dejavu says:

The numbers are going up because our great leaders continue to bring people into the country. Because these few were so important to society obviously smh….Nope they could have stayed where they were and took precautions in whatever country they are in. Every country that has gotten over this completely shut their borders, but every single week our government lets more people in.

      • bluenose says:

And this is the type of thinking that leads to the deaths of some of the weakest among us. Shame on you!

      • Really says:

Really? And if that was your momma or granny stuck away you would be the first screaming from the church pew to bring my granny home!

  22. Port 2 Port says:

Stop calling people idiots! Peoples rights have been taking away! Thats the problem! Call the government idiots they screwed up gotta bring the friends before they did government quarantine! Big mistake!

  23. Birdlegs says:

    Covid 19
    2 facts about its soread
1)it all depends on how dense the population is.
    2) it all depends on how dense the population is.

  24. Chris says:

Agreed. Need to be able to pay bills that fovernment check still hasnt cone in and I applied on the first day. Also hope the government checks the payroll taxes submitted by companies who may or may not be embelishing the amounts of compensation to employees.
