Photos & Videos: Heavy Rain Causes Flooding

February 19, 2015

[Updating] As of 8.30am this morning [Feb 19], the heavy rainfall has caused some flooding across the island, with reports of traffic being slowed in some areas due to floods, while a section of Palmetto Road blocked off and traffic being diverted.

Last night the Government said that this morning’s high tide coincides with a period of forecast heavy rainfall so places that usually flood may be “severely affected,” and the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] advised that there is currently a warm water eddy in our area with elevated sea heights of 30cm, which is roughly 1 foot above normal.

The photos below show areas including Palmetto Road, the airport, Bakery Lane, Woodlawn Road, TCD and more; and we are updating with more photos as able.

Update 11.02am: The Ministry of Public Works advised that teams from the Highways Section are addressing drainage and flooding problems at affected areas around the Island due the heavy rainfall today.

A spokesperson said, “Palmetto Road at the site of 6 Perimeter Lane retaining wall, is closed to motoring traffic. Assistance is also being provided by the Sanitation Department to reduce the flooding.

“The junction of Roberts Avenue and Devon Lane is closed due to flooding and the Highways Section is addressing other affected areas where ponding and traffic disruption has resulted but where roads are still passable with care.

“We will continue to provide the public with updates regarding flooding and drainage abatement as they become available,” the spokesperson added.

Update 12.55pm: A truck appears to be ‘stuck’ on Bakery Lane now, having been sitting there for some 20 minutes without moving.

Update 1.26pm: After being stuck for approximately one hour, the truck on Bakery Lane was towed away by another truck. Video below.

  1. Well then says:

Watch out for harbour road down by darells warf if youre on a moped!! That puddle comes up to yah kneeesss.

  2. Welcome!! says:

My female colleague (new to Bermuda) crossed the road in the pouring rain while the bus driver waited for her. Nice.

She then stood by the doors waiting for them to open and the bus driver looked at her, shook her head, and drove off; leaving my colleague in the pouring rain for another 15 minutes for the next bus.

Welcome to Bermuda and its ‘famous’ friendly atmosphere.

    • somuchless says:

Even the bus drivers have their moody Mornings lol

      • Mockingjay says:

Well in the States they dont even wait.

        • hmmm says:

All of the states…wow you must be a well travelled person who observes Public transport practices for a hobby. Are you a bus spotter !!! Are you part of a bus spotting club?

what buses have you caught in the States?

          • FDR says:

My biggest bonus was $1,000 in 2009 which just happened to be the same year I received my last cost of living raise! On top of that I do not make the average civil servant salary of $78k.

        • fedup says:

….and the states constantly markets itself as a friendly island with pink sand beaches.

    • J says:

(Devil’s advocate) Maybe she needed an excuse for being 15 minutes late to work this morning.

    • Typical says:

On my bus ride this morning, I was treated to a rant about how some of the routes are not running because drivers call in sick, and no one will cover them because they do not get paid overtime anymore.

I wanted to remind her that most employees in the private sector do not get paid overtime, and when I’m sick, I have to work from home. Good thing I bit my tongue though, no one likes to hear the truth!

      • Make a new plan Stan says:

You should also mention the bonuses at the end of the year and the well paid people you work for who will fire you without notice to keep their profit margins the same year over year.

Mention how even if you are doing the best job in the company you can still be ushered out the door because if you can work from home that means someone can do your job from New Delhi.

Then after all that say just how jealous you are that your colleagues would NEVER defend your right to keep your job……don’t hold back next time…..get it all of your chest if you have to listen so should they…..it’s called shared sacrifice right??

        • drew says:

Not everyone in the private sector gets bonuses. In my employment I haven’t had a bonus in 4 years. So yes the Driver should shut it and do their job. Everyone has a role to play!

        • Karma says:

          What’s a bonus?

    • Frog says:

Report the driver ! This behavior should not be tolerated.

      • Politricks says:

If drunk and high drivers are tolerated, then this too shall pass.

    • Confused says:

Sounds like its more to this story, was the bus full? wait and not let her on so confused…Unfortunately that doesn’t just happen to “new to the island people”

    • Expat says:

I think Bermudians are generally friendly. Just not when they’re working.

      • Mockingjay says:

@ Expat, well maybe we’re tired of being treated like second class citizens in our own country, employers want to pay us slave wages like the cheap labor that’s dying to get out of their poverty stricken countries and minimum or no benefits, paying sky rocket rent or mortgage, hour cuts or job cuts and people like the CEO of the B.T.A making $1,000 a day and you want us to sit up and look like Johnny Barns.
Well generally we are friendly but that is soon running out and you might get the shock of your life.

    • Y-Gurl says:

Bus drivers are among the most unfriendly of our civil servants and their driving, reading (stop signs) and color recognition (red lights) leave a lot to be desired, but they will strike when the toilet get backed up!

    • drunkenUrsula says:

      ok
I was a bus this morning, when a similar thing happen the driver waited for a lady she walked right passed the bus ..all passengers like the driver thought she wanted the bus…I guess it was your new colleague…lets not paint all drivers the same…

  3. somuchless says:

Does anyone have an update on the work progress on Palmetto Road. I feel bad seeing the pics knowing that they’ve had such a hard time over the last few months due to the weather.

    • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL says:

I know right! Looks like a new drain was not considered with the new wall that was being built!

      • Just sayin says:

Sadly this issue has been around for at least ten years and nothing done. A drain pipe laid to divert water to pond. TCD issue was bad engineering parking lot should have been raised. WooDlands road , mills creek and areas around it will never be solved due to the tides. They know yesterday this rain was coming. W and E should hv been out clearing drains from debris to help with drainage in many areas.

        • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL says:

Wait, thats too clever of an idea…being proactive!!

  4. chip says:

    Early summer wear trunks rider’s

  5. swing voter says:

BERNEWS all ova deh place bie!

  6. cuds says:

Let’s hope we don’t lose no patrol cars in these flood areas!

  7. Ed Case says:

Why doesn’t OBA do something about all this rain? It is causing flooding all over the place – its as if the OBA government just doesn’t care.

I’m sure if the PLP was in power they would have done something to make this rain disappear. After all, they did a good job on that $800 million didn’t they?

Who says PLP is good for nothing? Bring em back I say – they’ll fix us good and proper.

  8. Billy Mays says:

When (not if) that dam breaks at Roberts Ave., people below could be killed. Maybe that’s what it will take to finally fix the road there… it’s only been a few years of nothing being done at all.
    SORT IT THE **** OUT!!!!

  9. Kettle or pot says:

Agreed we cant control mother nature! But watch after the rain how many W & E employees will be out there probably getting overtime cleaning the drains. When this should be done on a scheduled calendar! Just like everything else, wait until it happens then try to reverse it..

  10. Andrew Paul Scaife says:

Good to see our new W&E Minister out “surveying” the situation in this deluge we are presently having…… he does look honestly concerned.
I am sure a bore hole for proper drainage has been placed at the foot of the retaining wall for proper run off……. Praying for the homeowner who was on the news the other night. :( #staysafebda

  11. Ed Case says:

This road has only had traffic lights for two years – I mean what do people expect? These things take time you know. Its only been since early 2013 that the traffic lights have been there.

Thats only a hundred weeks, 24 months. Hardly an inconvenience at all really.

For most of us that only about 500 workdays – so only 1000 stops at the traffic lights. I mean give them a chance – they’ll fix it eventually.

I do turn 65 in 2019 though – just sayin.

    • bermudaglobetrottersdotcom says:

I remember walking past those lights when I was pregnant with my soon to be 3-year-old.

One thing, Bermuda is always good for a laugh.

    • somuchless says:

Ed at 65 they might hire you to hold the stop and go sign cause we all know full well that, that wall won’t be fixed by 2019. Lol

  12. Honestly says:

These drains should be maintained on a regular bases. Be proactive for once and get the job done for all of Bermuda and not just some!

  13. Sky Pilot says:

some people are bloody idiots, they think their cars or bikes float or are waterproof or wont cut out on them.

  14. RS says:

What we do about this ?

  15. Just a matter of time says:

Usually I get in a defense mode before replying but I am just finding myself cracking up at the comments. @ Ed Case. I totally agree!!! ;)

  16. tom cooke says:

Say what you want… my garbage was picked up today as most was in the west end… and it was raining for most of the day… I don’t see my mail being delivered on a rainy day…

  17. Far says:

OMG!! Is the island sinking from all the expendable Non-Bermudians?

  18. Coffee says:

The wall on Harbour Road was infinitely more important to fix then Palmetto Road ? I guess that the people that live on Perimeter Lane are probably not as influential as the Paget people !

  19. nic says:

Bermudians are so cute! They amaze me at how laid back they are when it comes to weather related stuff…But seriously, it seems like the flooding is getting worse as the years go by… I’m just curious if there have been climate talks…if that flooding had occurred in my neighbourhood (NYC) they would probably declare a state of emergency… idk… I’m Bermudian and grew up right on the water so I love the elements but I’m definitely concerned about the effects of climate change…
