2013 City Fashion Festival Schedule Announced

Hosted by the City of Hamilton, the City Fashion Festival is an annual, week-long fashion celebration in Bermuda held this year from July 1 – 6. The week commences with Mannequin Monday where participating retailers, salons and sponsors display live models in their windows and throughout their stores.

In the evening, the festival’s main events kick off with the Hair & Beauty Showcase in Number 1 Car Park featuring Hamilton’s hair stylists and makeup artists at work displaying their creative creations.

The week heightens on Thursday evening with the Local Designer Showcase in the Harbourview Ballroom at Fairmont Hamilton. This new addition features the local talents of Bermuda’s young designers in a runway and reception style presentation.

Completing the week is the finale production of the Evolution Fashion Show, a world class showcase displaying fashions from City retailers, boasting exciting choreography, stunning make-up collections, a variety of music, the latest in hair trends and most of all… 200 of Bermuda’s beautiful models.

When Bermuda Was Touched By An “Angel”

Bermuda was touched by an angel — in a manner of speaking — in the summer of 1978.

Model/actress Shelley Hack — soon to become a cast member of the ’70s TV sensation “Charlie’s Angels” — was photographed at Bermuda’s Southampton Princess Hotel for a fashion spread called ”Turquoise …For Summer Show-offs” which appeared in the July issue of “Cosmopolitan” magazine.

Photographed by Steen Svensson, she wore a turquoise outfit with matching island accessories and hat in this picture from the spread.

Ms Hack remains best known for playing Tiffany Welles in the fourth season of the ABC drama “Charlie’s Angels” [1979–1980], replacing the departing Kate Jackson.

She appeared in a total of 25 episodes of the series, before being replaced in season five by model-actress, Tanya Roberts.

Ms Hack was born in White Plains, New York and raised in nearby Greenwich, Connecticut. She graduated from Greenwich Academy and Smith College, the latter with a history degree. She began her career as a teen fashion model and became the face of Revlon’s Charlie perfume in the mid 1970s.

“Life” proclaimed her one of the million dollar faces in the beauty industry and she ranked among a handful of ’70s supermodels.

Berkeley Institute students hosted their “Shine” Fashion Show this past weekend, with the proceeds going in aid of graduation expenses.The school’s cafetorium was filled with family, friends, faculty and guests including school principal Mrs Michelle Simmons, Dame Jennifer Smith and more. Bermudian Model Featured On Magazine Cover

Bermudian model Lillian Lightbourn continues to make waves in the international modeling industry, gracing the cover of the May 2013 issue of “Modern Salon” magazine, an American publication marketed towards the salon industry.

The cover showcased a hairstyle by Ted Gibson, a celebrity hairstylist who serves as the hair expert on the TV show “What Not to Wear” and whose clients include Angelina Jolie, Zoe Saldana, and Gabrielle Union. Mr Gibson said the haircut — called “colored shag” — is “advanced and basic at the same time.”

Ms Lightbourn on the cover of “Modern Salon”:

After starting out on the local modeling scene in 2007, the 5”10 model relocated to New York City where she has walked the runway at New York Fashion Week, appeared in top fashion publication Elle Magazine, was featured in a campaign that was in highlighted in the beauty chain Sephora and much more.

Ms Lightbourn is signed with the Trump Model Agency, which was founded in 1999 by real estate mogul Donald Trump and represents models including Beverly Johnson, Carol Alt, and Daniela Peštová.

Ms Lightbourn is also featured in an article in “Modern Salon”:

Ms Lightbourn is presently working in South Africa, where she has been done a fashion editorials as well as Mercedes-Benz Africa Fashion Week.

She thanks God for giving her these opportunities, and said she hopes to help open a local church there, and also get more involved in the local community in South Africa while she is there.

The Miss Bermuda Pageant has seven young ladies competing for the crown, and you can view introductions from some of them below describing why they entered the contest. Most said they viewed it as a way to increase their confidence and public speaking skills, as well as to try out a new experience.

This year’s pageant is scheduled to take place on Sunday June 23rd, at the Fairmont Southampton where reigning queen Rochelle Minors will crown her successor. Tickets for the Pageant are now on sale starting from $65, and can be purchased here on bdatix.com.

Berkeley Institute students hosted their “Shine” Fashion Show on both Friday and Saturday night, with the proceeds going in aid of graduation expenses.

Hosts for the night were students D’Kiyah Evans and Kayjuna Lema who kept the crowd entertained and laughing between scenes. The school’s cafetorium filled with family, friends, faculty and guests including school principal Mrs Michelle Simmons, Dame Jennifer Smith and more. An intermission was held half-way through the show with refreshments and other items available for attendees to purchase.

According to the programme, the Group B models were Jakeya Goater, Cayla Wade, Zaria Dill, Sakela Ebbin-Simmons, Ariana Caines, Jahmila Eve-Cann, Stevontae McCallan, Ashley Smith, Michaela Bean, Dana Bean, Cyronnae Ratteray, Genenis Hewey, Sharmila Harris, Sidney Mello, Korey Jackman, Marcus Simmons, Corey Butcher and Ramsay Saggar.

The Miss Bermuda Organization released the names and photos of the 2013 pageant contestants. This year’s pageant is scheduled to take place on Sunday June 23rd, at the Fairmont Southampton where reigning queen Rochelle Minors will crown her successor. Tickets for this year’s event will go on sale Friday May 3 on bdatix.bm.

The pageant was brought back from a long hiatus in 2011, when Jana Lynn Outerbridge won the title and represented the island at the Miss World Pageant in London. Last year Rochelle Minors won the title, and traveled to China to compete in the 2012 Miss World Pageant.

Red Cross To Hold Spring Fashion Show

The Bermuda Red Cross is holding an afternoon of fashion and fun at the Upstairs Closet Spring Fashion Show on Sunday [May 5]. The event will be held from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m at the Red Cross headquarters on Berry Hill Road, Paget.

Bond Girl: From Bermuda, With Star Quality

Three years before Sean Connery’s James Bond was smitten by her, British model Tania Mallet was stopping traffic in Bermuda — literally — during a “Vogue” photo shoot.

Ms Mallet — who played Tilly Masterson in “Goldfinger”, a sexually ambiguous character who became the first Bond Girl to rebuff secret agent 007′s supposedly irresistible charms — was photographed in Bermuda by celebrated French lensman Eugene Vernier for a 1961 fashion lay-out.

Monsieur Vernier shot Ms Mallet — his favourite model — at various scenic spots around the island but a playful photograph he took of her standing on the wall leading into Flatts Village along with a young Bermudian admirer became instantly iconic and was reproduced in newspapers around the world.

The photograph’s world-wide popularity helped to seal Ms Mallet’s standing as one of the top new faces of the early ’60s.

Born of a millionaire father and a Russian mother in 1941, Tania Mallet received her schooling in both France and England.

She joined the Lucy Clayton school of modelling in London and by the early 1960s had become one of Britain’s most famous models, her photographs appearing in such publications as “Vogue” and “Harpers,” on several occasions.

According to Ms Mallet, she got the role of Tilly Masterson in “Goldfinger” when someone sent a photo of her in a bikini to Bond producer Cubby Broccoli.

The character — out to avenge the death of her sister, Jill [Shirley Eaton], murdered by Auric Goldfinger in the film’s opening sequence — was herself killed off when the villainous title character’s henchman Oddjob [Harold Sakata] hurled his steel rimmed hat at her.

Despite the film’s phenomenal success, Ms Mallet did not enjoy acting or the filmmaking process and “Goldfinger” would be her only major big screen appearance.

Ms Mallet currently lives in England with her second husband. She still attends autograph signings at James Bond fan events.

TLC Features Dream Bermuda Wedding Gown

In the second season premiere of cable channel TLC’s reality dress-finding show “I Found the Gown,” a Massachusetts bride-to-be discovers the perfect wedding dress for her upcoming dream wedding in Bermuda at a bargain price.

In the episode, airing at 11 p.m. Bermuda time tonight [Apr. 19], Carolyn Ward, 28, has her heart set on an elusive and pricey Gisele gown by Vera Wang.

“That dress was meant for me,” said the 28-year-old US Navy veteran from Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Miss Ward said she first saw the $10,000 strapless gown online, her heart said yes, but her budget-minded head had other ideas.

Enter Vows, a boutique in the Boston community of Watertown, which stocks more than 800 gowns from sought-after designers – including Vera Wang.

Most of the dresses are samples in sizes 8 or 10 and are priced up to 80 percent off.

Miss Ward, who met her fiance when both were serving on the same US Navy ship, applied online to appear on “I Found The Gown”, sent a video to TLC and weeks later was trying on dresses at Vows in front of cameras.

Each episode of the TLC show features three brides and captures the drama of picking the perfect dress.

Miss Wards’ friends and family flew into Boston for the filming. “I had so much fun on the show,” she said. “It was a blast.”

Even better, she’ll be wearing the dress of her dreams to her July 25 wedding in Bermuda.

“As soon as I saw it, I was was shocked and amazed that they had it. They had hundred and hundreds and as soon as I put it on, I felt like a princess,” Miss Ward said.

Beauties And The Beach: “SI” In Bermuda

It was a case of beauties and the beach when a “Sports Illustrated” photo crew visited Bermuda with supermodels including Cheryl Tiegs, Ashley Richardson and a young Rebecca Romijin to shoot its 1995 swimsuit issue.

Entitled “Basking In Bermuda” and shot by Ron Labbe, the multi-page swimsuit spread showcased the models –and the pastel Bermuda backgrounds they were photographed against — to tremendous advantage.

“Fourteen of the world’s most captivating supermodels will guide an estimated 50 million readers through the beaches of Bermuda and the rain forest of Costa Rica,” said “Sports Illustrated” when it announced the two scenic locations of the 1995 swimsuit issue.

The cover girl that year was Daniela Pestova — “a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty from the Czech Republic …” — photographed on a South Shore beach.

She was the first model to make the cover in her first appearance in the swimsuit issue since Judit Masco of Spain in 1990.

Ms Pestrova went on to appear on the cover of the swimsuit issue two more times — in 2000 and 2006 — and has subsequently graced the covers of “GQ”, “Marie Claire”, “Cosmopolitan”, “Glamour” and “ELLE” as well.

The swimsuit issue was conceived by “Sports Illustrated” editor Andre Laguerre in the early ’60s to fill the winter months, a typically slow point in the sporting calendar.

He asked fashion reporter Jule Campbell to go on a shoot to fill space, including the cover, with a beautiful model. The first issue, released in 1964, entailed a cover featuring Babette March and a five-page layout.

Ms Campbell soon became a powerful figure in modeling and molded the issue into a media phenomenon by featuring “bigger and healthier” California women and printing the names of the models with their photos, beginning a new supermodel era.

The text accompanying the Bermuda photos in the 1995 swimsuit edition was minimal — and typically breathless:

“The view is breathtaking when Ashley Richardson hits the roof of a home in Paget parish [below], wearing a stretch lace cotton-Lycra miniskirt suit by Keiko …

“There’s splendor in the grass near Tobacco Bay when Daniela lies down on the job in a Karla Colletto bikini.

“Manon von Gerkan takes time to reflect as she finds repose beside the pool at the Blue Horizons inn, decked out in a Lycra mesh bikini by Cazimi.

“At The Reefs, a cliff side resort on Christian Bay, you never know who’s going to roll in with the tide. It might be Rebecca Romijn, who takes a dip at dusk in a nylon-spandex bikini from Gottex [pictured below]; or Vendela, who lets the early-morning sun soak through a stretch fishnet tank top and bikini bottom by Monika Tilley.

“Clouds may be rolling in behind her, but Cheryl Tiegs shines like the sun in a minipleated Lycra maillot by Gottex.

“The statuesque Manon, in a satin Malia Mills bikini, makes Stockdale House, a landmark on St. George’s Island, an even more popular tourist attraction.

“Cheryl is sitting pretty in a cabana at the Elbow Beach Hotel, having changed into a cotton-Lycra crop-top and matching hipster skirt by Malia Mills.

“Though she’s obviously no hayseed, Vendela looks downright down-home on St. George’s in a fetching, overall-inspired gingham-checked Lycra suit by Spot Swim.

“Sunset, sunrise: At day’s end, Angie Everhart hunkers down in a secluded cove near The Reefs in a metallic-finished bikini from Darling Rio; while Judit Masco can’t wait to greet the morning light at Jobson Cove, wearing a flowered Lycra maillot by Ritratti.”

While the Bermuda swimsuit edition — and the accompanying “Sports Illustrated” 1995 calendar — sold in the millions, there were detractors.

One widely syndicated American sports columnist called the “Basking In Bermuda” spread “an embarrassing anachronism …[for] the nation’s foremost sports magazine …”

He chastised the magazine for devoting an annual issue to supermodels cavorting in skimpy swimwear when ”…for the other 51 weeks of the year women athletes are struggling for what coverage they can get on the basketball court, on the track, on the tennis courts and in other sports.”

Top Fashionista Minkoff To Visit Bermuda

An industry leader in casual luxury handbags, accessories, and apparel, New York-based Rebecca Minkoff [pictured] will be heading to the island for Bermuda’s Fashion Week in July.

Known for her playful and subtly edgy designs, Ms Minkoff told the Racked.com fashion website today she is looking forward to visiting Bermuda for the first time.

“I’m going to Bermuda for July 4th, which is exciting because I’ve never been there,” she said. “The market director from Carine Roitfeld’s “CR Fashion Book” is from there, so she’s inviting a few designers and editors to Bermuda Fashion Week.

“I’m going to host a party and will be getting a nice little vacation out of it, too.”

California-born Ms Minkoff’s designs are a favorite of both everyday women and celebrities such as Agyness Deyn, Lauren Conrad, Keira Knightley, Ashley Greene, and Reese Witherspoon.

She has appeared on shows such as “Good Morning America”, “Fox Business News” and “Extra” to discuss her take on fashion and business.

In 2009, she was honoured as a New York Moves Power Women for her entrepreneurial success in the fashion industry.

The Dreams, Visions & Realities Fashion Show was held last night [Feb 16] at the Berkeley Institute and saw the latest clothing supplied by local stores including Klimaxx, Orange Bay, Kids 2000, A 2 Z Accessories, Last Night Boutique and The Edge.

The night of fashion was a fundraiser with all proceeds going to The Women’s Resource Centre, Bermuda Health and Cancer and The Family Centre. Attendees were treated to at least 10 different themed scenes and entertainment throughout the night including dance routines, singing and a Zumba display.

Vendors were on hand offering different accessories featured in the show and refreshments were available during the intermission and throughout the night. Master of Ceremonies for the event was Earl Basden and DJ Malcolm Lethal Weapon Smith kept the energy flowing through the night.

Model Call For 2013 Evolution Fashion Show

The City of Hamilton will be holding model calls at various locations in April for the 2013 Evolution Fashion Show. Males, females and children of all ages and sizes that are interested in taking part in the show are invited to attend.

The venues include Jakoma [located in the old Berkeley Institute Hall], Whitney Institute Middle School and Warwick Academy. Those attending are asked to wear a white top and slim jeans/shorts or skirt. Females should bring at least 4” heels and swimsuit models need to bring a bathing suit.

Bermudian Opens Clothing Boutique in Toronto

Bermudian Julia Currelly has opened the first Luisa Spagnoli store in North America. The 1,800 square foot boutique is located in the Yorkville Plaza between Cumberland Avenue and Yorkville Avenue in the fashionable district of Yorkville. It will carry the full range of knit and woven casual and corporate daywear, evening apparel, accessories, handbags, hats, belts and jewellery.

The Italian ready-to-wear label was founded in Perugia in 1928 and is still run by members of the Spagnoli family today. Luisa Spagnoli is best-known for introducing Angora yarns to knitwear before expanding the range of clothing for women who wear elegant, stylish quality garments with a classic edge.

Julia Currelly, CEO and buyer for the Luisa Spagnoli store, says: “We believe that the Canadian market as a whole is under-served with luxury, classic women’s clothing, particularly in the niche where quality and value meet.

“We’re excited to introduce Luisa Spagnoli to Canadian women. It’s a sensational design house and the styling of the fabrics is feminine and refined. We know that there are sophisticated women who are fashion and trend conscious that are looking for elegant quality and we can’t wait to show them the Luisa Spagnoli look.”

Mrs. Currelly first discovered the brand in 2009 when she introduced the line to her family boutique, Cécile, in Bermuda. “Luisa Spagnoli has been a huge success with my customers in Bermuda and I thought it was a great shame that it isn’t available in North America. I think that the product will really appeal to Canadian women.”

The Luisa Spagnoli store will open with the Fall/Winter and Holiday collections. Luisa Spagnoli offers a broad range of sizes. Many styles are produced in a size 50 [US size 16].

The Luisa Spagnoli look was recently made famous when Kate Middleton — now the Duchess of Cambridge — wore a Luisa Spagnoli red suit during a walkabout in St. Andrew’s, Scotland last year.

Mrs. Currelly plans to expand the Luisa Spagnoli mono-brand boutiques across Canada in major metropolitan areas.

The February issue of GQ magazine features Bermudian model Darius Dayes — who models under the name Darius Dio — gracing the pages.

Mr Dio is currently signed to the Wilhelmina modeling agency and lives and works in Los Angeles. The son of Bermudian Silvia Donna Mae Swan, he has appeared in numerous television and print advertisements for major brands including Miller Genuine Draft beer, Gillette and more.

Entries Open For 2013 Miss Bermuda Contest

The Miss Bermuda Pageant organisers are now accepting contestants for the 2013 Miss Bermuda Pageant, which will be held in June 2013. Requirements are the same as in previous years: contestants must be ages 17-24, must not have children, must not be married/divorced and must be able to travel.

Young ladies can sign up directly on the Miss Bermuda Pageant Facebook page by pressing the ‘Apply Today’ tab or they can download an application from the pageant website.

Under the direction of Milika Trott-Seymour, the pageant was brought back from a long hiatus in 2011, when Jana Lynn Outerbridge won the title and represented the island at the Miss World Pageant in London. Last year Rochelle Minors won the title, and traveled to China to compete in the 2012 Miss World Pageant.

The pageant’s website said: “All Miss Bermuda contestants participate in an educational development program leading up to the finals which is geared toward self improvement, and community service. Although only one can win the crown, all the young ladies grow in their experience as a contestant and come away with a first class, once in a lifetime experience.”

Local Designer Accepted At NY Fashion Week

René Hill Originals Collection will be featured in the Small Boutique Fashion Week during the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week in February, 2013.

René Hill said: “Emily’s Fair Trade Co. Ltd., incorporated in 2010, is ecstatic about the news that René Hill Originals was accepted as a participant in the Small Boutique Fashion Week (SBFW), which takes place during the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week next February.

“We received confirmation recently from the organizers of the event and I am incredibly excited that our collection was accepted in this prestigious show for emerging designers. The Small Boutique Fashion Week’s aim is to launch emerging bdesigners’ careers, and is sponsored by American television channel CBS2.”

Ms. Hill continued, “I applied on the advice of a Bermudian designer and a few days later received an email requesting my portfolio. Before I could send it, the organisers, who had visited my website, sent an email saying they were sufficiently impressed with our current collection and that we were accepted to participate in the SBFW 2013 show.”

The René Hill Originals’ collection blends modern fashions with a nod to old world charm. It encompasses all fair/direct trade practices, creates handmade scarves to wrap up in, modern kilts, Bermuda Cedar handle purses and silver jewellery.

Ms. Hill concluded, “I look forward to participating in this prestigious fashion event and continuing to share my collection with the world.”

[Updated w/additional photos] Umbrellas, the inside of a computer, bottle caps and grocery bags from all local stores. These aren’t traditional design materials when you think of haute couture, but they were some of the unconventional fabric choices for the sold out Eco Runway competition on Friday night [Nov 16] at The Bermuda High School.

Eco Runway is inspired by Project Runway the popular design reality competition hosted by Heidi Klum. In the BHS version, 36 students in nine teams took place in the 6-week competition to design, execute and send two outfits down the runway; one avant garde and one ready-to-wear. The eco catch was that at least 50% of the materials used in each design were required to be made from recycled or found objects.

Team ReNew, consisting of Sophia Schwertl and Charlotte Griffiths with models Aoife Rynne and Kenyu Hoshina, won the competition overall with their technologically-inspired designs. Team ReNew provides some background for their vision: “We all acknowledge computers and technology is our future, but we have to remember our past, so we took apart computers and keyboards to find out what was inside that we could use.

“We then experimented with different ways to mix the modern computer parts with components of the past. For the male model we used a Roman theme and an Elizabethan design for the collar of our dress. We used designs from the past, but kept the materials futuristic.”

The CaTeMs, Connie Campbell and Megan Bower, with models Juliana Franco and Alecia Hollis, were awarded best avant garde design for their dress, the bottom half of which was made out of opened umbrellas for a very dramatic silhouette.

Team Redesigned, Sabina Stan, Mia Fung, Kathleen McBeath, Kristin Dill and Courtney Browne (the latter two as models) were awarded best ready-to-wear design for their nautically-themed dress made mostly from old sails and plastic gloves from volunteering with Daily Bread.

Teams were each assigned a mentor from the local fashion community, to provide advice and guidance throughout the competition. In addition, Bersalon donated two stylists who consulted with the teams and provided hair and makeup for the runway show and Trikeita LeShae worked with the teams at the dress rehearsal, prepping them for their walk down the runway.

This is the second year that The Bermuda High School has held this event; last year it was recognised by the Bermuda National Trust for combining an appreciation of environmentalism with a love for design. Funds raised from Eco Runway will be used to support BHS’s Financial Aid Programme.

Juliana Franco said: “As a model who has participated in Eco Runway two years in a row, I am always astounded by the ingenuity of the designs at the end of the competition. My team changed their designs twice in the week prior to the runway show, after their initial idea didn’t work and managed to win best avant garde design.”

Hannah Lampit said: “This was a very inspirational and creative experience and was a great way to use team work skills. It was great to realise all the different things one can reuse, like using Halloween candy wrappers to make bracelets. It was educational and exciting and I can’t want to do it again next year.”

BHS To Host Eco-Runway Fashion Competition

The Bermuda High School’s fashionistas are putting the final touches on their designs for the Eco-Runway competition which takes place this Friday, November 16th, 7pm at BHS’ Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The show is open to the public and there are limited tickets available for students and adults, in addition to VIP tickets for a champagne reception which includes VIP seats, champagne, canapes and prizes.

Nine teams of students have created two designs, one avant garde and one ready-to-wear. The catch is that they had to be made of at least 50% recycled or found materials. The teams paired up with fashion mentors in the community and had 6 weeks to complete their collection.

Sketches which the students will be bringing to life on Friday:

The design teams have been mentored by fashion industry locals: Jacqui Neath Myrie from AS Cooper, Heather MacDonald and Gelena Thompson from Atelerie, Maritza Sequeros and Zoe Williams from Calypso, Oneka Benn Schwartz of Design Pretty, Leilah Musson of French Connection, Jenia Thompson of Lovit, Alexandra Arruda of Max Mara and freelance designer Lyn Winford.

From team H2O, 15 year old competitor Reem Bushara’s said: “It’s been a great experience. The most challenging part was how to make recycled materials look fashion forward but, by working with my team and mentor, we found a creative solution.

“My favourite part was collaborating with my friends and mentor on a school project that allowed us to think outside the box. We all love fashion so we were able to share ideas and brainstorm. Our final idea is inspired by the island, the sea specifically. We are excited to share it on Friday!”

Last year the show was sold out and honoured with an environmental award by the Bermuda National Trust. This year guest judges are: Amir X, Jennifer Johnson Porter and Delight Morris.

Host and Director of Advancement Jennifer Burland Adams explains: “This competition combines creative arts, fashion and environmentalism in a unique way.

“The students are responsible for all part of the process: concept and design, execution, model search, styling and runway music. We’d like to thank all of our mentors and judges for supporting The Bermuda High School and our student’s evident creative talent.”

The eco runway competition was inspired by the popular reality show ‘Project Runway’. The students will premiere their collection to the public at BHS’ Queen Elizabeth Hall on November 16th at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults.

A Champagne reception which includes VIP eco RUNWAY tickets, champagne, canapes and a chance at a champagne-themed door prize are $50. Profits will go to the Bermuda High School’s Financial Aid program. Limited tickets are available online at www.bhs.bm.

La Serena Named In “World’s Best Spas” List

In its debut on the World’s Best Spas list, The Reefs ranks No. 3 among the top five hotel spas in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas. With a score of 92.60, The Reefs was also the top-ranked Bermuda hotel spa.

[Updated] Locals donned wigs, rollers and various other sorts of unusual hair adornments today [Sept 28] in support of the PALS “Mad Hair Day’ fundraiser which saw people donate $5.00 to the charity and wear their hair in a mad or crazy way for the day.

Participants were from various businesses and schools including A.S. Coopers, Strands Salon, Salon Pink, Argus Insurance Island Shop, Annex, HSBC Human Resources Department, Gilbert Institute, St. George’s Preparatory, Chatterbox Preschool, BHS School, Flying Colours, Axis Capital Holdings, CellOne, Devonshire Post Office P.A.L.S. staff and more.

PALS. was founded in 1980 to provide professional hands on care and support to cancer patients primarily in their own homes. The services of P.A.L.S. nurses are given free of charge, as is an array of medical equipment including electric beds, wheelchairs, and walkers.

PALS. To Host ‘Mad Hair Day’ On Friday

P.A.L.S. will be hosting a ‘Mad Hair Day’ this coming, Friday [Sept 28], where people are asked to donate $5.00 to the charity and wear their hair in a mad or crazy way for the day.

A spokesperson said: “Ever wake up in the morning and wished you could lie in bed for a few extra minutes instead of getting up and making your hair presentable? Well on this day you can go wild! Ever wondered what you would look like with bright pink, blue, perm or even curly hair? Well now this is your chance to experiment, have fun and raise funds to support P.A.L.S. in our first ever Mad Hair Day.

Local Model Davika Hill To Travel To St Lucia

Bermudian model Davika Hill will be travelling to St. Lucia on September 28th for the Model Elite Graduation Ceremony to be held at the Bay Gardens Inn at Rodney Bay in St. Lucia on September 30th 2012.

In July 2012, Ms Hill was awarded the titles ‘The Official Face of Fab-Fetale Island Exclusive Model Management’ and ‘The Official Face of Modelles Magnifique Training School.’ Both businesses are based in the island of St. Lucia.

Ms Hill will be the recipient of several awards in St Lucia, and she will be recognized for her performance in her exams in the Model Elite Course offered by Modelles Magnifique Training School.

Minister Minors: Nail Technician Training Initiative

[Updated with video] A new programme to train Bermudians in the cosmetology field will be getting underway next month, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors said today [Aug 29].

The Certified Nail Technician Programme is being undertaken in partnership with the National Training Board, the Bermuda College and industry partners.

Classes begin on September 4 and end December 21, 2012, and each participant is expected to attend class room instruction 3 days a week, Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 4pm, and on Thursdays and Fridays they are required to work in the industry to gain practical experience.

They had close to two dozen applicants and 12 successful candidates were selected: Teresa Bean, Tahirah Baker, Shawnel Burt, Cammie Caines, Jessica DeCosta, Melanie Dunn, Cinamin Lovell, Shermaine Murphy, Dawnelle Outerbridge, Jerkeisha Simons, Chikira Smith and Tunisa Wales.

“The NTB has had extensive discussions and consultation with experienced cosmologists in our local industry and they have all indicated that there is a need for highly skilled Bermudians in this field,” said Minister Minors.

“Therefore, with the introduction of this programme, the 12 young ladies you see here today will have an opportunity to learn the right skills, knowledge, and competencies required to work as nail technicians. The 3 month full time programme is a combination of theory and practical experience in a classroom and a salon setting – here in Bermuda.

Minister Minors said: “Another wonderful aspect of this training initiative is the community service portion where these young women will provide services to some of our seniors by treating them to pedicures and manicures.

“So we see this as a well rounded initiative which aims to teach skills, build confidence and character and help them become self sufficient businesswomen.

“Finally, we recognise that the challenges of a troubled economy have resulted in our people losing jobs. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, through the NTB is making tangible efforts to provide fair opportunities for Bermudians by creating and implementing programmes to enhance their ability to become economically stable.”

Good afternoon,
It was roughly two weeks ago when I announced that through the efforts of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, 18 young Bermudian men were afforded an opportunity to travel overseas to receive their Level 5 Drywall Certification.
We are an equal opportunity Government – and today, I am pleased to announce yet another job training initiative which will benefit 12 more Bermudians – the young ladies you see behind me.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Certified Nail Technician Programme is an initiative being undertaken in partnership with the National Training Board, the Bermuda College’s Professional and Career Education Division or PACE, and industry partners.
The NTB has had extensive discussions and consultation with experienced cosmologists in our local industry and they have all indicated that there is a need for highly skilled Bermudians in this field.
Therefore, with the introduction of this programme, the 12 young ladies you see here today will have an opportunity to learn the right skills, knowledge, and competencies required to work as nail technicians. The 3 month full time programme is a combination of theory and practical experience in a classroom and a salon setting – here in Bermuda.
Before I outline the programme further, I want to take this opportunity to introduce Lynn Hamilton, the owner and operator of the Face and Body Shop, who will be taking the lead in ensuring that these individuals, once they have successfully completed their training, will be afforded an employment opportunity.
Lynn, on behalf of the Government of Bermuda, thank you so much for your commitment.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a phased programme and the eligibility for participants is as follows:
Candidates were required to be registrants at the Department of Labour and Training with the status ‘unemployed’;
Candidates were required to have a high school certificate or equivalent;
Candidates were expected to attend a mandatory orientation/assessment seminar;
Candidates were expected to attend a mandatory Customer Service workshop;
We had close to two dozen applicants and based on the criteria, 12 successful candidates were selected. They are:

Upon graduating from this programme, these candidates will have acquired the following skills prescribed by the Milady’s Standard Nail Technology widely known in North America.
Each participant is expected to attend class room instruction 3 days a week, Monday to Wednesday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
On Thursdays and Fridays they are required to work in industry to gain practical experience.
To add to their practical experience, the Bermuda College has agreed to market the programme in such a way to allow students at the college the opportunity to receive nail treatment services at discounted prices.
This is wonderful collaborative effort and will no doubt assist these candidates to build their clientele over time.
Another wonderful aspect of this training initiative is the community service portion where these young women will provide services to some of our seniors by treating them to pedicures and manicures.
So we see this as a well rounded initiative which aims to teach skills, build confidence and character and help them become self sufficient businesswomen.
Finally, we recognise that the challenges of a troubled economy have resulted in our people losing jobs.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, through the NTB is making tangible efforts to provide fair opportunities for Bermudians by creating and implementing programmes to enhance their ability to become economically stable.
And we are very pleased that we have the help of our private sector partners in this very worthwhile endeavour, because together we are demonstrating that we are standing up for Bermudians.

Video: Miss Bermuda Returns From China

Miss Bermuda Rochelle Minors returned from London last night [Aug 21], after spending a month in China taking part in the Miss World competition.

She was greeted by her family and friends, and presented with a bouquet of flowers by Miss Bermuda Pageant Director Milika Trott Seymour. At the airport last night she said, “I had an awesome time and I’m happy to be home and I’m glad that I had this experience”.

The 22-year-old student and fashion model was selected over seven other hopefuls last month to win the Miss Bermuda title, and left for Ordos, Mongolia, China on July 18th and participated in a whirlwind of activities over the past month.

Miss Minors placed out of the top 30 at the Miss World finals, however did make the semi-finals for both the model and talent portion, and the finals of the multi-media award. The Pageant has still not released the final results, so it remains unclear where Miss Minors placed overall.

Miss Devonshire Zaire Bean was crowned Miss Teen Bermuda Islands on Sunday night [Aug 19], and the 17-year-old will represent the island at the Miss Talented Teen Pageant in St Kitts. Friends, family and supporters packed the Fairmont Southampton as ten young ladies took the stage for the Miss Teen Bermuda Islands.

The 10 contestants included Miss Sandys Kwame Harris, Miss Southampton Alicia Kirby, Miss Warwick Zamora Symonds, Miss Paget East Kayla Kellman, Miss Paget West Savanna Ramatar, Miss Devonshire Zaire Bean, Miss Pembroke Safiah Hodson, Miss Hamilton Tyonasha Taylor, Miss St George’s North Stevantae McCallan and Miss St George’s South Tiahana Booth. Video: Miss Bermuda In Top Model Show

Miss Bermuda Rochelle Minors took part in the semi-finals of the Top Model contest in China on August 12th, in advance of the Miss World finals held this past weekend.

The 22-year-old joined 45 other contestants from around the world in the fashion show, which was the semi-final portion of the model division. A well known model on the local scene, Miss Minors has modeled in numerous fashion shows since the age of 14, walked the catwalk during London Fashion Week, served as a hair model for the renowned salon Vidal Sassoon and participated in Salon International.

Miss Bermuda comes in around the 1.20 mark, and again at the 5.15 mark:

[Updated] Friends, family and supporters packed the Fairmont Southampton last night [Aug 19] as ten young ladies took the stage for the Miss Teen Bermuda Islands, with Miss Devonshire Zaire Bean walking away with the title.

Zaire Bean also won the Miss Teen Super Model, Miss Paget West Savannah Ramatar won the Miss Photogenic title, Miss St George’s South Tiahana Booth won the Miss Talent, Miss Sandys Kwame Harris won the Miss Sweet Charity, Miss St George’s North Stevantae McCallan won the Miss Personal Style and the Rose Hart Miss Congeniality award.

Organised by Tee’l Productions, the pageant was open to teenagers aged 13 – 17, and the winner will receive a trip to St Kitts to participate in the Miss Talented Teen Pageant, official wardrobe provided for her reign by Clara Bows boutique, one year membership at Olympic Club, a $500 cash prize and more.
