Photos: Car Crashes Into Wall, Lands Overboard

[Updated with slideshow + video] Early this morning a car driver crashed through a wall on Harbour Road in Paget, resulting in the car landing completely overboard, and the driver escaping unharmed.

A police spokesperson said, “At approximately 4:10am this morning [Thursday May 16th], police responded to a report of a road traffic collision along Harbour Road in Paget, in the area of the Lower Ferry Dock.

“It appears that the driver of a car struck a stone wall resulting in the vehicle landing the water. The male driver escaped unharmed and an investigation into the collision has commenced.

“There is a significant portion of the wall that is missing and Works and Engineering staff are due to put up temporary barriers in the area in short order. In the meantime, motorist are asked to use caution as they drive/ride in the area.”

Taxi Crashes, Overturns, Lands Close To Water

[Updated] There was a collision today [May 8] which saw a taxi land upside down only a few yards away from the water in Southampton, and second collision happened a short while later when a fire service vehicle responding to the crashed taxi collided with two other vehicles.

The first collision involved a taxi overturning in Southampton in the Jew’s Bays area. It crashed through a hedge and part of a railing before landing upside down close to the water’s edge on what appears to be a residential property.

The second collision occurred at the junction of Burnt House Hill and Middle Road in Warwick, and appeared to have involved three vehicles. One was a fire service vehicle which ended up partially in a hedge, a private car was also involved and it also looked like a motorcycle may have been involved.

Further details are limited this time, however we will update with official information as able.

Update 2.15pm: The taxi has been removed, additional photos of it have been added to the slideshow above. Unofficial reports indicate that no one was injured in the taxi collision.

Update 5.40pm: The police confirmed that no one was injured in either collision, and also confirmed that the collision involving the fire service vehicle occurred when it was responding to overturned taxi crash. The full police statement follows below.

Single Vehicle Damage Only Collision in Southampton
Around 11:55am on Wednesday, May 8th police officers attended a reported single vehicle collision along Middle Road in Southampton in the vicinity of Jew’s Bay.
It appears that a taxi was being driven along Middle Road when the driver collided with a roadside wall. The taxi then went down an embankment into the yard of a waterside property.
The taxi was extensively damaged. A section of the property was also damaged. However, there were no reported injuries.
Three Vehicle Damage Only Collision in Warwick
Around 12:15pm on Wednesday, May 8th police officers attended a reported three vehicle damage only collision at the junction of Middle Road and Burnt House Hill in Warwick involving a Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service vehicle, a car and a motorcycle.
Details regarding how the collision occurred are unclear at this time; however it appears that the emergency service vehicle was responding to the earlier collision near Jew’s Bay at the time. Apparently all three vehicles were damaged; however, there were no reported injuries.

Slideshow: Vehicle Lands On Side After Collision

[Updated] Earlier this evening [Apr 24] a collision occurred which resulted in the vehicle landing on its side on North Shore Road, by the round-a-bout by Barkers Hill. The collision also appeared to have involved a utility pole, resulting in the pole ending up landing on top of the vehicle.

The police responded, and commuters slowed down as they passed the scene. Further details are limited at this time, however we will update with additional information as able.

Update Apr 25, 11.01am: The police statement confirms that no one was injured, it follows in full below.

Around 6:15pm on Wednesday, April 24th police officers attended a reported single vehicle damage only collision on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Barkers Hill.
It appears that a jeep was being driven along North Shore Road when it collided with the curb and overturned. As a result the vehicle and a nearby utility pole were damaged; however there were no reported injuries.
BELCO personnel subsequently attended the scene and removed the damaged utility pole.
Inquiries into this collision are ongoing and any witnesses are encouraged to contact PC Sean Simons on 295-0011.

Photos/Video: Tree Falls, Causes Power Outages

[Updated with photos + video] Due to the strong winds this morning [Apr 7], a large tree fell and affected power lines in the Middle Road in Warwick area [by Lindos], which resulted in power outages.

The fallen tree blocked most of the road, and crews are in the area working to remove the tree and restore power. Three BELCO trucks and two W&E trucks are on scene, and it is estimated the road will remain closed for approximately four hours while repairs are made.

The Bermuda Weather Service issued a Gale Warning valid for this morning, saying that a low center to the near northeast will bring gales and showers throughout the morning, which will begin to decrease this afternoon as the low moves away

Police spokesperson Dwayne Caines said, “As a result of the strong winds, a tree fell and landed on power-lines in the area of Middle Road in Warwick [by Lindos]. This resulted in major power outages in the area.

“Works & Engineering and BELCO have two work crews on scene to repair the lines, and to remove the large tree that is blocking the entire road. This is expected to cause a 4hr delay to vehicular traffic,” continued Mr Caines.

The statement was issued at approximately 7am, meaning the estimation is that the road will remain closed off until around 11am today.

An area resident told Bernews the tree came down early this morning, and creating a very loud noise waking her out of her sleep. She said at first she had no idea what the noise was, and it “half scared her.”

Update 9.39am: BELCO confirmed that about 360 customers were affected.

Update 10.09am: BELCO said that most customers have had power restored, however 92 are still out as the workers have to cut down a second tree at the request of W&E and to work safely the lines have to be de-energized.

Update 10.48am: BELCO said the high winds contributed to power outages across the island in which approximately 875 customers were affected.

Starting at approximately 3:45am, there were outages in Warwick, Paget and Tuckers Town, as well as several smaller outages scattered across the island. Most customers have been restored at this time, however approximately 140 customers remain without power. The full statement is here.

Photos: Car Removed After Crashing Into Pole

Sometime around 2am this morning [Jan 18], a car driver crashed into a utility pole on an embankment on Mullet Bay Road in St George’s. The police and fire service attended the scene, and traffic was reduced to one lane. A tow truck came at around 3am and removed the vehicle from the embankment and wall.

We understand the driver and passenger were not injured in the accident. The vehicle sustained serious damage to the front, and the utility pole was leaning to one side after being damaged in the collision, with the light fixture breaking off and falling to the roadside.

This incident occurred only a short while after a motorcycle and car collision at the junction of Happy Valley Road and Montpelier Road in Devonshire, which claimed the life of a 30-year-old Devonshire man.

Photos: Fire At Canadian Hotel On Reid Street

Twenty-five firefighters were called out last night [Dec 19] after a blaze broke out at the old Canadian Hotel on Reid Street. The fire initially began with smoke emanating from the building, but about 1 hour after the fire started flames became visible after the fire broke through the roof.

Acting Deputy Chief Lloyd Burchall from the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service said the fire had “elements of difficulty” as it was a derelict building and access became a problem as well as the fact there are old wooden floors.

“Some of the floors are burnt through, so at this time we are being very cautious with any entrances into the building,” said Mr Burchall. “We will be conducting a search very shortly.”

The Canadian Hotel was opened in 1918 by James “Dick” Richards, with its opening marking the first time a black man in Bermuda owned a hotel licence. The Richards’ family sold the property in 1984, and it became a rooming house for men. In 2008 the new owners acquired a Special Development Order [SDO] to develop the property, but that never came to fruition.

Accident Causes Traffic Delays On Palmetto Rd

[Updated] At approximately 8.30am this morning [Dec 3] a collision occurred on Palmetto Road near the incinerator involving two cars. The police said traffic delays are expected and advised motorists to take a different route. Details are limited, but we will provide additional information as able.

Update: A police spokesperson said: “Around 8:30am on Monday, December 3rd police and first responders attended a reported two vehicle collision on Palmetto Road in Devonshire in the vicinity of the Tynes Bay waste treatment facility.

“It appears that a SUV was traveling along Palmetto Road and another SUV was exiting the Tynes Bay facility when the vehicles collided.

“Both SUVs received extensive front end damage; however the respective drivers, a 78 year old Devonshire man and a 39 year old Hamilton parish man, were treated for minor injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and released. There were no other injuries reported.”

Photos/Video: Belmont Hills Golf Course Fire

[Updated with video] A fire broke out on the 17th tee at the Belmont Golf Course this evening [Nov 29], and firefighters are presently on scene extinguishing the blaze.

Smoke is pouring out into the night sky, and there are at least three fire vehicles and a number of personnel on scene. It appears the fire started in a pile of vegetation debris, and as of 7.45pm the fire appears to be contained with firefighters now wetting down the hot spots.

Update: A Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “BFRS responded to Belmont Golf Course for a report of a brush fire. 3 vehicles and 10 personnel responded to fight the blaze. A large pile of horticultural waste was well involved when the first responding vehicle arrived.

“The blaze took approximately 3 hours to bring under control and dense smoke consumed the nearby neighborhood. The lack of water initially caused some concern however a nearby neighbor provided water to assist the firefighters in combating the blaze, for which the Fire Service is extremely grateful. At this time the cause of the blaze is unknown. There were no injuries reported.

Photos: 30 Firefighters Battle Warehouse Fire

At approximately 1pm today [Nov 17] thirty firefighters responded to a fire at the Bermuda Mechanical Building on #10 Marsh Lane in Devonshire. The blaze was brought under control at 3.30pm, leaving one third of the building completely destroyed.

Eight fire vehicles responded to the scene, as well as multiple police cars. Flames could be seen through the upper windows of the building, and the first firefighters to arrive on scene had to force entry into the building to start fighting the blaze.

Plumes of smoke billowed over the area, and police issued a warning to area residents to stay inside and close their windows, and asked members of the public to stay clear of the premises as “smoke from the fire may be toxic.”

Firefighters — wearing breathing apparatus — battled the blaze for 2.5 hours, and at one point hooked up a line to a nearby warehouse tank to obtain additional water.

“Thankfully no one was in the building at the time and no injuries were reported. A complete and thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause,” an official statement from the Fire Service said.

Photos: Small Brush Fire Breaks Out In Paget

[Updated: Fire started again overnight] At approximately 2pm this afternoon [Nov 11] a small fire broke out in farmlands in the Honey Hill, Paget area. An 8-year-old girl who lives close by was the first to notice the fire, and told an adult who called 911.

Both the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service and Police responded to the scene, and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Before the firefighters left the area, they thanked 8-year-old Kyasia for her quick action after spotting the fire.

Update Nov 12 – 5.46am: The fire restarted again in the same area at approximately 4am this morning, and firefighters returned to the scene.

Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief joined officials at the Hamilton Fire Station on Monday [Oct 29] to officially launch Fire Safety Awareness Week. This year Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service is recognizing its Fire Safety Awareness Week from Monday, October 29 to Friday, November 2, 2011. The theme this year is “Have two ways out!”.

Remarks given at Fire Safety Awareness Week Launch:

Every year, the Ministry of National Security, in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association, sister Fire Departments across the United States and the United Kingdom participate in an initiative to educate the community on fire safety.

Minister Perinchief uses “Jaws Of Life”:

Children from the island’s schools toured the displays of fire equipment and were treated to fire personnel demonstrating equipment including showing the force of water used to fight fires. Minister Perinchief also joined in, demonstrating how an emergency tool can be used to free a trapped person. The Minister used the “Jaws of Life” to remove the roof of a car with the assistance of fire personnel.

Minister Perinchief’s full statement follows below:

Good morning everyone and thank you for being here to start this important week. Fire safety awareness can save lives. As we go about our everyday lives we sometimes take many kinds of prevention for granted. Fire safety cannot be one of those things.
During this week the public will have the chance to receive fire extinguisher training and home fire safety advice from our experts within the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to examine their own homes and businesses for practical ways to improve fire safety. Make sure that you have a clear plan in the event of a fire and as this year’s theme reminds us: Have two ways out!
The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service is a well trained group of men and women who are available to advise the public on fire safety awareness and who form the front line for most of our first responses to casualties. This is an excellent profession which provides great opportunities for public service.

Photos: Firefighters Respond To Spill At KEMH

[Updated] At just before 11pm this evening [July 12] the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service arrived at King Edward Memorial Hospital, with four fire trucks, two support fire vehicles and what appeared to be over a dozen firefighters.

The situation is not fire related, with unofficial reports indicating the firefighters were called in due to some form of a spill, with at least four firefighters seen wearing hazmat suits.

What appeared to be members of the hospital management arrived close to midnight, and at that point hospital security came over saying that management had requested the media leave the property.

From our subsequent positioning off the property, we noted two firefighters don hazmat suits at around 1.15am, with two more firefighters joining them in protective gear twenty minutes later.

The hazmat-suit wearing personnel disappeared down in the bottom/back area of KEMH, and were seen rinsing off with water after coming out, with a temporary outside ‘shower’ having been put in place in advance.

A few staff members leaving the hospital, speaking unofficially and off-record, indicated to Bernews that to their knowledge the patients and staff are all fine. We will update with additional information as able.

Update 2.30am: A Works & Engineering truck and van showed up appearing to be carrying some form of containers, and the firefighters are now out of the hazmat suits and are packing them away.

Update 2.50am: Approximately four firefighters put on breathing apparatus and went into the back/bottom area of KEMH carrying brooms.

Update 5.12am: All fire personnel left the area at around 5am.

Update 6.30am: A Fire Service spokesperson confirmed they had responded to a spill of a “caustic substance” at the rear of the hospital, and had eight vehicles and 15 firefighters on scene.

The substance flowed some 100 feet in area, and sand was used to mitigate the spill. The clean-up was a joint effort between firefighters, W&E and KEMH. There were no injuries, and the incident has been declared under control.

A BHB spokesperson confirmed they experienced a spill of sodium hydroxide overnight, and that services inside the hospital were not impacted and no injuries were reported.

Photos: Fire Personnel Awarded Jubilee Medals

Governor George Fergusson visited the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service’s Hamilton Headquarters on Monday [June 4], where he presented Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals to a number of fire department personnel.

Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid welcomed the Governor before addressing the group and inviting the Governor to say a few words. After speaking to the service personnel, Mr Fergusson proceeded to present the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals.

The Governor took some time after the presentation to mingle with the fire service personnel and had individual photos taken for family members and friends who attended the ceremony. Police, Regiment and Corrections personnel have also received Diamond Jubilee medals.

Photos: Massive Fire At Pembroke Dump

A huge blaze broke out last night [Mar.29] at the Marsh Folly Composting Facility in Pembroke. Smoke billowed high in the sky, visible for miles around.

Dozens of personnel from the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded, with firefighters called in from all over the island, as well as off duty staff receiving calls to respond to the emergency. They worked for hours to battle the blaze, with private water truckers assisting the efforts by transporting water to the scene.

Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid said they had 17 fire vehicles, and 60-70 personnel on scene. He said there were two areas of horticultural waste on fire – one measuring 50ft x 60ft, the other measuring approximately 60ft x 200ft.

Dozens of onlookers watched, many taking photos with their phones, one motorcycle rider even arrived up wearing a full faced gas mask. Some area residents reported a hard time leaving their homes, as spectators parked randomly blocking entrances, with many also saying the smoke had made its way into their homes.

The Bermuda Police Service maintained watch, while the Bermuda Regiment provided manpower to help clean up. We unofficially understand one firefighter was transported to KEMH for treatment to unknown injuries.

Public Works Minister Michael Weeks said: “We are taking this situation very seriously and our top priority is to ensure the safety of area residents. Cedarbridge Academy has been made available should any residents affected by smoke need to evacuate to a safe place. We will update the public as this situation develops, but I urge people to stay clear of the area and allow the emergency services to carry out their work.”

Video/Photos: Car Plunges Over Wall

[Updated] Earlier today [Nov.16] a car accident occurred which saw the car plunge head-first down into a residential property in the Tribe Road #6, Horseshoe Road, Southampton area.

The accident occurred sometime before or around noon, and this afternoon construction workers removed the car using an extendable forklift. The procedure took quite some time, with the machine operator having to take care not to hit the surrounding property walls and cause further damage.

Area residents told Bernews the female driver appeared to come from another residential property, and smashed through a residential wall before the car plunged approximately 15/20 feet into the neighbouring property.

Residents said emergency personnel extracted the driver from the car before an ambulance transported her to hospital, and that the driver was talking to the emergency personnel at the scene. We will update with official information as able.

Update 5.18pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 12 noon on Wednesday November 16th, Police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on Tribe Road #6, Southampton near Horseshoe Road. It appears that a car was outside a Tribe Road #6 home when the vehicle collided with a wall and drove over an embankment.”

“The driver, a 78 year old Southampton woman was temporarily trapped in the vehicle and rescued by Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service personnel. She was conveyed to KEMH via ambulance for medical assessment. The car was extensively damaged.”

Update Nov 17, 7.40am: As of this morning, the driver is listed in stable condition on a general ward.

Photos/Videos: Swinging Doors Fire

At approximately 12.30am this morning [Nov.7] Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and Police responded to a report of a structural fire inside the Swinging Doors Nightclub at #29 Court Street in Hamilton. Swinging Doors is sandwiched between C&R Discount and the Fish Hut on Court Street.

Fire personnel arrived at the scene to find moderate smoke emitting from the structure and used forced entry to gain access to the building.

Firemen could be seen wearing breathing apparatus as they entered and exited the building from which smoke and smells of burning were coming. Three fire trucks, about a dozen firemen, and six police cars could be seen in attendance.

There were several bystanders on the street, on the corners, and watching from balconies and porches of nearby residences. When asked, some of these bystanders said that the Fish Hut had been closed and that as far as they knew, no one had been injured. There were no ambulances on the scene nor, according to bystanders, had any ambulances been seen or heard leaving the fire scene.

Acting Division Officer Colin Swan said the fire was contained to the south east corner of the building and the remaining interior suffered smoke and heat damage. There were no reported injuries and the fire is under investigation at this time.

Photos: Police Car Crashes Into Wall

[Updated] This evening [Oct.27] a Police car was involved in an accident which saw it crash into a wall on Somerset Road. The incident was apparently a two vehicle collision involving the police car and a private car, with at least one of the car occupants sustaining minor injuries.

Police presently have the road blocked off while they investigate the incident, and bystanders have gathered to watch the proceedings. Details of what occurred are unclear at this time, however we will update with an official statement as able.

Update Oct.28: Police statement

Around 8pm on Thursday October 27th, Police responded to a report of a two vehicle collision on Somerset Road in Sandys near the junction with Gilbert Lane.
It appears that a private car was travelling on Somerset Road and a marked police car was travelling on the same road responding to an incident with its emergency equipment activated when the vehicles collided.
As a result, the police car also collided with the wall of a nearby property. The officer driving the police vehicle was not injured and the driver of the private car, a 31 year old Sandys man sustained relatively minor injuries and was assessed at the scene by EMTs.
Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Emergency Services responded to an accident near West Pembroke School on Monday morning [Oct.17], in which a car and van collided. Traffic flow was delayed as the road was completely blocked as police investigated the accident scene.

A Police spokesperson said, “At 7:30am on Monday October 17th, police responded to a report of a collision on North Shore Road, Pembroke near West Pembroke School between two cars and a truck. It appears that the three vehicles were travelling along North Shore Road when they collided.”

“The driver of one of the cars, a 34 year old Pembroke man and the driver of the truck, a 60 year old Pembroke man were conveyed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not life threatening.”

“The other car driver, a 54 year old Pembroke woman was uninjured. All three vehicles were damaged. An investigation into this incident is underway.”

Three Car Accident: 5 People Injured, 1 Arrest

[Updated] At approximately 7:30pm this evening [Sept.5] there was an accident involving three cars in the Frog Lane, Devonshire area, which has resulted in one car being partially on top of the other.

Both Police and the Fire Service personnel are on scene, and presently have police tape blocking off the accident scene.

There are dozens of bystanders present, and emergency service personnel were seen to remove at least one person – possibly two – from one of the damaged cars and transport them away via ambulance. We unofficially understand one of the injured persons may be a female.

Another man was seen to be handcuffed at the scene, and at last check was seen standing, in handcuffs, with police officers on the side of the road. He stood silently while being handcuffed.

We will update with an official police statement as able.

Update 8:40pm: The man who was standing on the side of the road in handcuffs appears to have been taken away from the scene by police. The road remains blocked off at this time, while the cars remain in position.

Update 10:36pm: Police confirm 34-year-man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving at the scene, and said “the extent of the injuries to those involved is currently unknown but not believed to be life threatening.”

A Police spokesperson said, “Around 7:30pm on Monday, September 5th police and first responders attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Frog Lane in Devonshire. Details about the collision are unclear at this time; however it appears that it involved at least two vehicles.”

“The extent of the injuries to those involved is currently unknown but not believed to be life threatening. A 34 year old man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving at the scene. A section of Frog Lane was cordoned off for approximately two hours as officers examined the collision area. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.”

Update Sept.6: The Police said the man arrested failed an alco-analyser test.

A Police spokesperson said, “Around 7:30pm on Monday, September 5th police and first responders attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Frog Lane in Devonshire.”

“It appears that a vehicle was travelling along Frog Lane when it collided with two other cars in the area; one parked and one stationary. Five people suffered minor injuries and were transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital via ambulance were they were later treated and released.”

[Updated] The start of a large task is now underway – the work on the HWP Group Body & Paint Centre on St. John’s Road. Yesterday [Aug.8] flames tore through the building causing extensive damage to the property and automobiles, with the fire burning for over three hours.

The road was opened late last night, and this morning the true extent of the damage could be seen. Much of the roof collapsed, the interior of the car showroom was decimated with lines of burned cars on display in front of the shattered windows. Smoke was still wafting from the middle of the building this morning, blowing across the Dandy Town sports club.

Earlier today [Aug.9] the repairs began, with both manpower and machinery at work. Dozens of curious onlookers have gathered at the gas station and surrounding areas to watch the construction machinery tear down the walls of the HWP car showroom. The work is underway presently, and we will bring you additional footage later today.

Update 1:45pm: Demolition has come to a standstill as fire department personnel are taking a closer inspection of the building. Workmen were seen retrieving papers that were falling out of charred filing cabinets.

HWP CEO Jonathan Brewin said, “We are making every effort to complete all mechanical work as soon as possible and HWP will be open for business from Wednesday morning, albeit on a restricted basis.”

“We will be working manually, as our computerised systems are down, so we ask for patience from our customers. Mechanical services anticipate that they will be able to run on around a 50% capacity for the time being. The biggest issue will be in the parts department which relies heavily on a computerised inventory system.”

[Updated with video] The morning after the massive blaze at HWP, locals are driving by slowly, many getting out of their cars for a better look at the building.

Much of the roof has collapsed, with the interior of the car showroom decimated, showing burned cars lined up in front of the shattered windows. Small amounts of smoke can still be seen emanating from the building this morning [Aug.9], which remains cordoned off, although the surrounding roads are open.

The fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the HWP Group Body & Paint Centre on St. John’s Road, which is home to the company’s cycle sales division, automotive showrooms, and administrative offices. The flames ripped through the building for over three hours while firefighters fought to get them under control.

Last night HWP CEO Jonathan Brewin said, “Our first priority was the safety of all staff and customers and we are pleased to report that our evacuation procedure ran smoothly.”

Photos: 60 Firefighters Battle Blaze At HWP

[Updated - all staff are out and safe] At approximately 2pm this afternoon [Aug.8] a fire broke out at the HWP Paint shop on St Johns Road in Pembroke, with locals reporting hearing what sounded like an explosion just before the fire, and staff running out of the building. The Bermuda Fire Service has responded and are presently working to put out the fire. We will update as able.

Update: Massive amounts of smoke is billowing through the air for miles around, and emergency personnel continue to arrive.

Update: It is hard to count the amount of fire trucks as the smoke is inhibiting the view, however it appears there are at least six fire trucks on scene. Locals are reporting being able to see and smell the smoke from as far away as Friswells Hill and Flatts.

Update: Flames can be still be seen through the smoke at the top of the building. The fire appears to have burned through the roof of the building and is burning strong. Additional emergency service vehicles are arriving, and we unofficially understand that crews have been called in from both ends of the island to help fight the blaze. There appears to be approximately 20 vehicles on scene.

Update: HWP report that “All staff are out and safe.”

Update: Police are also on scene, keeping onlookers back from the fire. Dozens of people are watching the fire, many taking photos with their cell phones. You can hear ‘explosions’ going off as the flames burn in the video below:

Update: The fire continues to spread throughout the building as the fire department fights to get it under control. The volatile substances within the building are of concern, as is the close vicinity of the Rubis gas station.

Update: Police presently have the road blocked off from the Berkeley Hill Road, and huge clouds of black smoke can be seen for as far as the eye can see. The smoke is so thick, you cannot see as far as Gorhams from Berkeley.

Update: Photo showing the inside of the building on fire, with reports saying the building has started to partially collapse. Firefighters have been pumping water from Mill Creek to help combat the blaze.

Update: There are 60 firefighters on scene having responded from multiple fire stations, and we unofficially understand some came in from their days off to help battle the blaze. They are using a hydraulic lift to spray gallons of water at the fire.

Update: The police are “asking all individuals within a one mile radius of the St. John’s Road area to please stay inside as it is not clear at this time whether the smoke in the air is toxic or not.” Police officially confirm the very welcome news that all HWP staff are fine. Official police statement below:

At 2:02 pm the Bermuda Fire Service, first responders and the Bermuda Police Service responded to a report of a fire at HWP Paint and Body Shop on St. John’s Road, Pembroke.
At present, members of the Bermuda Fire Service are working feverishly to get the fire under control with the help of 9 fire appliances and 60 fire officers.
In the abundance of caution, the Bermuda Police Service is asking all individuals within a one mile radius of the St. John’s Road area to please stay inside as it is not clear at this time whether the smoke in the air is toxic or not.
All businesses in the surrounding areas have been evacuated and HWP can confirm that every member of their staff is accounted for.
Residents living in the Cox’s Hill, St. John’s Road and Blackwatch Pass areas are asked to please stay away from the HWP area until the fire has been contained.

Update: Officials are holding a press conference this evening, so we will bring you full official details later tonight. We expect to hear from representatives of the Fire Service, Police and HWP.

Update: The Department of Health issued a statement:

The Department of Health is encouraging all residents in the direct neighborhood of the fire at HWP on St. John’s Road to protect their rain water supplies from smoke and soot caused by the HWP fire.
Ideally all down-pipes that connect the catchments and tanks should be blocked on houses immediately adjacent to the fire, to prevent any pollutants that may have blown onto the roof from being washed into the water tank by the next rainfall.
Furthermore, the catchment should be cleaned before being used to collect water again.
The best method of sealing down pipes is to use inflatable rubber stoppers (available at paint specialty stores), but an alternative, less expensive, method is to wrap old tennis balls with cloth to provide a tight seal in the down-pipe. Cover the ball and cloth with a plastic zip lock bag so that they do not get wet.
Once the pollution episode is over, the entire roof surface should be thoroughly washed with clean water using a spray hose. Residents should then use a 5-gallon pail and a large sponge to remove the remaining water from the gutters, then unplug all the downpipes.

Update: Attending were Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid, National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief, Police Chief Inspector Na’imah Williams and Jonathan Brewin, President and C.E.O. of the HWP Group.

Chief Fire Officer Hollinsid said there were 20 vehicles sent to the scene, and it took 3.5 hours to control and contain the fire. He said the Fire Service: “Made attempts to extinguish the fire by entering the building, but that was quickly decided against because of the construction of the building, and it was considered to be unsafe.”

“The officer in charge made the decision to go into what we call a defensive firefighter mode. That means we would not commit people to the building, we used a surround and drown methodology.” He said they got great cooperation from BELCO to use their water, and laid a line from Mills Creek to use their water.

Minister Wayne Perinchief praised the Fire Service, and said: “There were no injuries, one fire fighter succumbed to exhaustion but he is now okay.”

HWP CEO Jonathan Brewin said all staff were evacuated safely, and HWP will open a help desk at 10am tomorrow to assist customers. He said there are approximately 50 staff on that side of the business, and they were alerted by their fire alarms. Mr Brewin praised the Police and Fire Service for their response.

Update: HWP released a statement which can be read in full here, and the photo below shows the HWP building this evening, post-fire.

Update: As of this time [midnight] St Johns Road is open, and police have the area around HWP cordoned off. It is still quite smokey, and officers are wearing protective masks. Seven videos from today posted here.

Photos/Video: Airport Dump Fire Contained

Earlier today [July 30], Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded to a reported fire at the dump located near L.F. Wade International Airport.

It appears that someone saw smoke and flames coming out of the ground in an area of the dump, and called 911. At least three fire service vehicles and approximately eight firemen attended the scene, and quickly took control of the situation.

The area was wet down and a machine was used to upturn debris to allow firefighters to access hot spots below the surface. We will update with official information as able.

Photos: Car Destroyed By Fire In Warwick

[Updated] Just past 6pm this evening [July 27] the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service responded to a report of a car on fire in the Rockland Estates, Warwick area. The fire appeared to have started out small in the engine of the car until it engulfed the entire car in flames, as pictured in the photo series below:

Two Injured: Three Car Accident in St David’s

[Updated] This morning [June 5] there was a three car accident on Southside Road in St David’s in the area by the Pizza restaurant. There were three vehicles involved, with an SUV sustaining extremely serious damage in the accident:

A taxi also sustained serious front end damage, although not as extreme as the damage seen to the SUV.

The accident delayed the start of this morning’s Bermuda Bicycle Association’s cycling race, with the cyclists having to wait for the vehicles to cleared from the road prior to starting their race.

It is unclear exactly what transpired at this time, although we unofficially understand that at least one person was injured and is presently hospitalized. We will update with official information as able.

Update 2:30pm: Officials confirmed that at least one person was injured, however did not give specifics of the extent of those injuries at this time. The injured man is presently undergoing surgery.

Update 7:55pm: The Police said the accident occurred at 4:45am this morning, and both the driver of the SUV and taxi were injured, while the car driver was uninjured. The full Police statement is below:

Around 4:45am on Sunday, Police and first responders attended a reported three vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Southside Road in St. George’s in the vicinity of the Southside Cinema.
It appears that a SUV, a car and a taxi were traveling along Southside Road when the collision occurred. The drivers of the SUV and the taxi, a 37 year old Pembroke man and a 41 year old Sandys parish man respectively, were injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.
The driver of the car, a 32 year old St. George’s man, was not injured. All three vehicles were extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact PC Romeo Allen on 295-0011.

Update 11:45pm: The drivers of the SUV, a 37 year old Pembroke man, is listed in stable condition on a surgical ward and the driver of the taxi, a 41 year old Sandys parish man, has been discharged from the hospital.

Shelly Bay Area: Car Smashed Through Wall

[Updated] At approximately 7:00-7:30am this Easter morning [Apr.24] a car accident occurred on North Shore in the Shelly Bay area, in which the car smashed through the wall, and ended up perched on the remaining area.

The Police were on scene this morning. Parts of the car could be seen scattered about the nearby road and the wall also sustained damage. We will update with official information as able, however we unofficially understand the occupant[s] may have walked away from the accident scene.

Update: The Police confirmed that the occupant[s] did leave the scene. A Police spokesman said, “At 7:30am on Sunday, Police attended a reported single vehicle damage only road traffic collision at the junction of North Shore Road and Radnor Road in Hamilton parish. It appears that a car was traveling along North Shore Road when it collided with a wall. As a result the vehicle and the wall were extensively damaged.”

“The occupant(s) of the vehicle left the scene prior to Police arrival. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact PC Witton Williams on 295-0011″

Photos & Videos: Riddell’s Bay Fire

[Updated] Multiple Bermuda Fire Service vehicles responded to a brush fire at the Riddell’s Bay Golf & Country Club tonight [Mar. 8].

Bystanders — some snapping pictures on their mobile phones – looked on as a wall of fire consumed scrub on the golf course, with flames leaping more than 20 feet in the air and thick clouds of smoke billowing over Warwick.

Fire fighters were able to control the brush fire before it could threaten any homes or other structures adjoining Bermuda’s oldest golf course, which opened in 1922. Fire fighters doused the fire with hoses coming from multiple angles, at times causing massive plumes of smoke.

It appeared that no one was injured, and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We will update with official information as able.

Update March 9: The Bermuda Fire Service said that it took firefighters approximately 5 hours and over 3,000 gallons of water to extinguish the brush fire. Officials said the cause of fire is unknown, but is not believed to be suspicious in nature. They received the 911 call at 7:52pm, and the Fire Service responded with 6 fire appliances, 2 support vehicles and 20 personnel as it was reported as an extremely large area of brush on fire.

A Fire Service spokesperson said, “First responding vehicle arrived on scene just past 8pm to find an area approximately 150’ x 200’ of horticulture waste fully engulfed in flames. Due to the size of the pile and the fact that the fire was deep seated, it took firefighters approximately 5 hours and over 3,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. At the moment the cause of the fire is unknown but is not believed to be suspicious in nature.”

Update #3: A Police spokesman said, “Around 7:55pm on Tuesday, Police responded to a report of a fire in the Riddell’s Bay Road, Warwick area. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene and eventually extinguished the brush fire. Police officers assisted with crowd control as several members of the public were at the location observing the incident. There was no damage to surrounding property and no reported injuries. At this time the cause of the fire is unknown.”

Update #4: As of 6am, Thursday, March 10 – the pile was still pouring smoke, however a lot less then yesterday

Photos/Video: Car Flips Over In Smiths

[Updated w/video and photos] At approximately 10:15pm this evening [Jan 23] a car smashed through a wall and flipped over on Harrington Sound Road opposite the junction with Lolly’s Well Road in Smith’s Parish.

The car was being driven west along Harrington Sound Road, and appeared to damage a fence, a hedge, a wall and demolished a moongate before flipping upside down.

It appears that two people were injured in the accident with one man being trapped for a few minutes before he was able to crawl out with assistance from a passing motorist who had stopped to assist. He was taken by ambulance to King Edward Memorial Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

The Fire Service attended to assist in extricating the man trapped in the car but he was able to get out before they arrived. The road had to be closed to traffic while emergency service personnel attended the scene. We will update with official information as able.

This is the second time this month a car accident in which the vehicle ‘flipped over’ has occurred in the Harrington Sound area, following an incident on January 3rd.

Update 5:00am: At 2:30am a crane came and removed the car, and it was transported away. Additional photos and video of the car being hoisted and removed is below.

Update 2:50pm: Official statement from the Police:

Around 10:30pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Harrington Sound Road in Smith’s parish near the junction with Lolly’s Well Road.
It appears that a car was traveling along Harrington Sound Road when the driver, a 32 year old Smith’s parish man, lost control. As a result the vehicle went over an embankment and overturned. The driver was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. The passenger, a 26 year old Warwick man, was also injured; however he declined medical treatment.
The car was extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Darren Harvey on 295-0011

Car Crashed Over Railings on North Shore

This morning [Jan 8] there is a car visible crashed over the railings on North Shore, Devonshire in the area just west of Loyal Hill. The car appears to have been traveling towards Hamilton when it crashed through the railings, sustaining damage to the front of the car.

[Updated] At approximately 2:30pm this afternoon [Jan 3] there was an accident on Harrington Sound Road, just west of Trinity Church Road junction. The roof of the car has sustained damage, and a bystander said the car ‘overturned’ at one point during the accident.

Update: Thanks to Sarai Hines, we have added photos of the car actually ‘flipped over’ as it was immediately after the accident, prior to being moved. Also, the Police confirm the driver left the scene, and said his injuries are “unknown.”

This morning [Jan 3] a car is visible crashed up on the sidewalk on Middle Road in Warwick by the Esso Gas Station. It appears from the position of the barriers and the damage to the sidewalk that the car hit the sidewalk and ended up in the position shown.

Bike & Police Collision: Two Injured

Bernews — Sat, 01 Jan 2011 09:37:28 +0000

[Updated] Two men were taken to the hospital, and around twenty Police officers converged on Court Street after a collision between a Police vehicle and a motorbike following a high speed chase just before 4am this morning [Jan 1].

The accident occurred while numerous people were still on the streets finishing up their New Year’s celebrations. Bystanders, many of whom expressed their displeasure, said that the bike was traveling onto Court Street when it collided with a Police “paddywagon.” Numerous people on scene claim that a Police car was following the bike prior to the accident, with it being unclear whether the Police were pursuing the bike or not.

Both gentleman were attended to by medical personnel on the scene before being taken away by ambulance. Bernews unofficially understands their injures are not life threatening, and at least one of them has a broken leg.

The Police vehicle involved in the accident is pictured below. We will update with an official Police statement later today.

A number of Police officers rushed off from the scene with sirens blaring at approximately 4am. Bernews understands that additional incidents took place in the same time span.

Update 10:15am: Official Police statement:

Police were on mobile patrol at around 3:35am January 1st 2011, when they attempted to stop a man riding a motorcycle with a passenger, traveling at a high rate of speed on Angle Street.
Officers followed the vehicle, however the cyclist continued at a high rate of speed, failing to come to a stop at the stop sign at the junction of Court and Angle Streets. This resulted in the motorcycle colliding with another police vehicle that was traveling South on Court Street.
Officers immediately rendered assistance to the two men on the motorcycle until the ambulance arrived and both men were taken to KEMH were they are being treated for multiple superficial wounds and both men received a broken leg.
None of the injuries appear to be life threatening
Traffic Collision investigators were on scene and an active inquiry into this incident is underway, and police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to contact police on 2950011.

[Updated] Smoke poured into the air this morning [Dec 14] in the St Monica’s Road, Pembroke area after a house caught on fire at approximately 10am..

The Bermuda Fire Service responded with at least three fire vehicles, and a number of personnel. It is unclear at this time whether anyone was injured, however area residents told us they believe that no one presently lives in the property. We will update with official information as able.

Update 11:55pm: Official information from the Bermuda Fire Service:

Received call at 9:56 am of a fire at #1 St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke. Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded with 3 fire appliances and I support vehicle and 11 personnel.
First fire appliance arrived on scene at 10:01 to find smoke and fire issuing from a single story dwelling. 2 fire fighters in breathing apparatus quickly brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes.
The fire appeared to have started in a bedroom closet. There were no injuries reported as the house has been unoccupied for a couple of months. The incident is being investigated however; it is our understanding that the house is to be demolished soon.

Video & Photos: Taxi Fire in Hamilton Parish

At approximately 5:30pm this evening [Nov 24] the Police received a report of taxi on fire in the area of North Shore Road and Coney Island in Hamilton parish. The Police confirm the welcome news that no one injured in this incident.

Both Police and the Bermuda Fire Service rushed to the scene, and east end residents faced traffic delays as they headed towards St George’s.

A two vehicle accident occurred on Mullet Bay Road in St. George’s late tonight [Sept 17th] involving a minibus and a black Hyundai Getz. It appeared the car’s female driver was heading in an easterly direction, while the mini bus was traveling west and the two collided.

The car driver was cared for by EMTs at the scene, until an ambulance transported her to King Edward Memorial Hospital, with what we understand are non life threatening injuries. The female driver and the two occupants of the mini bus did not need medical attention. Two units from the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service with seven men came upon the accident after attending what we understand to be a small brush fire. Police were also on the scene investigating.
