Berkeley Institute students hosted their “Shine” Fashion Show this past weekend, with the proceeds going in aid of graduation expenses.The school’s cafetorium was filled with family, friends, faculty and guests including school principal Mrs Michelle Simmons, Dame Jennifer Smith and more. The Miss Bermuda Organization released the names and photos of the 2013 pageant contestants. This year’s pageant is scheduled to take place on Sunday June 23rd, at the Fairmont Southampton where reigning queen Rochelle Minors will crown her successor. Tickets for this year’s event will go on sale Friday May 3 on bdatix.bm.

The pageant was brought back from a long hiatus in 2011, when Jana Lynn Outerbridge won the title and represented the island at the Miss World Pageant in London. Last year Rochelle Minors won the title, and traveled to China to compete in the 2012 Miss World Pageant.

CedarBridge Academy students hosted the Du Jour Fashion Show this past weekend at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, with funds raised from the two-night event going towards the graduation prom. The packed audience enjoyed the evening’s entertainment which showcased dance and musical performances and the latest fashions set against a backdrop of lighting effects and stage props designed and painted by the students. The Dreams, Visions & Realities Fashion Show was held last night [Feb 16] at the Berkeley Institute and saw the latest clothing supplied by local stores including Klimaxx, Orange Bay, Kids 2000, A 2 Z Accessories, Last Night Boutique and The Edge.

The night of fashion was a fundraiser with all proceeds going to The Women’s Resource Centre, Bermuda Health and Cancer and The Family Centre. Attendees were treated to at least 10 different themed scenes and entertainment throughout the night including dance routines, singing and a Zumba display.

Vendors were on hand offering different accessories featured in the show and refreshments were available during the intermission and throughout the night. Master of Ceremonies for the event was Earl Basden and DJ Malcolm Lethal Weapon Smith kept the energy flowing through the night.

A new hair and beauty supply store is opening its doors this week, with ‘Mirage’ set to retail a wide range of beauty products, including some product lines that were not previously available in Bermuda.

Two sisters — Sophia & Nickesha Smith — are the main driving forces behind Mirage, which will be selling hair products, makeup, styling tools, nail polish, skin care items, hair extensions and much more at their Ewing/Court Street location.

Nickesha Smith said they decided to venture into the sector as while they were attending university abroad in the U.S. they discovered most people did not buy the bulk of their beauty products from their drug stores or supermarkets, but from their neighborhood beauty supply store [BBS]

“My sister and I could remember driving with our girlfriends for miles just to look for a special brand or product,” said Ms Smith. “Nothing is like tangible shopping, and when it comes to purchasing beauty supplies and hair… most times it is better done in person.

“You can see it, feel it, buy it, own it with instant satisfaction. However, when we arrived back home we realized that there was no true general BBS in Bermuda. Our desire is to bring the U.S. style beauty retail shopping experience to Bermuda.”

“This type of business required intensive research and a load of networking because it is not the easiest sector to enter. I often refer to a “club membership”. At the end of the day, it’s really up to your vendors if they wish to let you in.”

Ms Smith continued: “I would also like to make note that we are working closely with our advisers at BSBDC [Erica Smith & Roxanne Christopher] who are very instrumental in providing us with solid keynote advice which will enable our success as a developing small business.”

Asked about the products they will be selling, Ms Smith said: “We are still working our inventory development.. to be honest it will ever be growing.

“The beauty industry does have it’s trends, to there will always be a new selection of hair care product, styling tool, wig or extension brands to try out. That’s the beauty of the beauty industry, there are endless items out there for your to explore so you can express your individual beauty.

“This is why we chose “Limitless Beauty” to be our business slogan. Currently we stock popular haircare brands you have grown to love for natural hair and relaxed [ie. Aunt Jessie, Gentle Treatment, Cream of Nature, Dark & Lovely, SmoothCare, Organics, Elasta QP, etc.]

“We are also the distributor of haircare brands that you only be able to find locally at our store [i.e: Straight Request, Vonte, Diva by Cindy, Jessiecurl, MyHoneyChild, Roberts Diamond Bond, Orginal Moxie, Silicon Mix, and Miss Key].

“We are also selling some skin care items like Shea butters [refined or organic], authentic black soap and more. Customers can soon expect growth in that department in 2013 as we have discovered some yummy skin care finds,” explained Ms Smith.

“We are also the local distributor for the extensions we carry. We will regularly stock the various line produced by these popular US extension brands [ie., ModelModel, Sensual Collection, Isis Collection, Modu Anytime, Urban Beauty and Soultress Wigs].

“We do carry makeup, styling tools [combs, brushes, rollers, curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, standing dryers, and weaving supplies] and nail care products and nail polish. We currently carry the Slick ad XO nail polishes, we find them to have pretty colors with good coverage… and because of their wallet friendly prices, they’re sure to be seen in almost every household here in Bermuda shortly.

Ms Smith continued: “Our customers can expect that our lines will grow as we supply them the hair & beauty supplies they require to suite their needs. For instance this coming January our nail care product lines will expand to accommodate the needs of our local Nail Technicians.

“Also the remainder of our distributor haircare product brands and styling tools will readily available for purchase within the early part of next year… which is not a long wait.

Mirage’s soft opening will be held this evening [Dec 11] at 5:30pm at their Ewing/Court Street, Hamilton location, where refreshments will be served, and customers will be offered a special 15% discount. Those looking to buy Christmas presents this year have a few more options since three new retail stores have recently opened on the island, while a fourth retail store is set to open in the coming days.

Exim Home Goods recently opened in Somerset, Guilty Pleasures and Atlantic Jewellery have opened in the Washington Mall and a fourth store is set to open soon which will also be located in the Washington Mall.

Launched by sisters Jamela and April Daniels, Guilty Pleasures is located on the Church Street level of the Washington Mall right next to Secrets.

Ms Daniels explained that the store sells accessories for the modern sophisticated woman, the Proactiv skin care line, hats, gloves, scarves, vintage pieces, and even doggie clothes for small and large dogs.

“We have a lot of one of a kind items,” said Ms Daniels. “Handmade items from different parts of the world…West Africa all the way to India.”

Jewellery designer Jacquie Lohan has been in business as Atlantic Jewellery for over ten years, and is well known for her artistic creations.

Photos: BHS School Eco-Runway Fashion Show

[Updated w/additional photos] Umbrellas, the inside of a computer, bottle caps and grocery bags from all local stores. These aren’t traditional design materials when you think of haute couture, but they were some of the unconventional fabric choices for the sold out Eco Runway competition on Friday night [Nov 16] at The Bermuda High School.

Eco Runway is inspired by Project Runway the popular design reality competition hosted by Heidi Klum. In the BHS version, 36 students in nine teams took place in the 6-week competition to design, execute and send two outfits down the runway; one avant garde and one ready-to-wear. The eco catch was that at least 50% of the materials used in each design were required to be made from recycled or found objects.

Team ReNew, consisting of Sophia Schwertl and Charlotte Griffiths with models Aoife Rynne and Kenyu Hoshina, won the competition overall with their technologically-inspired designs. Team ReNew provides some background for their vision: “We all acknowledge computers and technology is our future, but we have to remember our past, so we took apart computers and keyboards to find out what was inside that we could use.

“We then experimented with different ways to mix the modern computer parts with components of the past. For the male model we used a Roman theme and an Elizabethan design for the collar of our dress. We used designs from the past, but kept the materials futuristic.”

The CaTeMs, Connie Campbell and Megan Bower, with models Juliana Franco and Alecia Hollis, were awarded best avant garde design for their dress, the bottom half of which was made out of opened umbrellas for a very dramatic silhouette.

Team Redesigned, Sabina Stan, Mia Fung, Kathleen McBeath, Kristin Dill and Courtney Browne (the latter two as models) were awarded best ready-to-wear design for their nautically-themed dress made mostly from old sails and plastic gloves from volunteering with Daily Bread.

Teams were each assigned a mentor from the local fashion community, to provide advice and guidance throughout the competition. In addition, Bersalon donated two stylists who consulted with the teams and provided hair and makeup for the runway show and Trikeita LeShae worked with the teams at the dress rehearsal, prepping them for their walk down the runway.

This is the second year that The Bermuda High School has held this event; last year it was recognised by the Bermuda National Trust for combining an appreciation of environmentalism with a love for design. Funds raised from Eco Runway will be used to support BHS’s Financial Aid Programme.

Juliana Franco said: “As a model who has participated in Eco Runway two years in a row, I am always astounded by the ingenuity of the designs at the end of the competition. My team changed their designs twice in the week prior to the runway show, after their initial idea didn’t work and managed to win best avant garde design.”

Hannah Lampit said: “This was a very inspirational and creative experience and was a great way to use team work skills. It was great to realise all the different things one can reuse, like using Halloween candy wrappers to make bracelets. It was educational and exciting and I can’t want to do it again next year.”

[Updated] Locals donned wigs, rollers and various other sorts of unusual hair adornments today [Sept 28] in support of the PALS “Mad Hair Day’ fundraiser which saw people donate $5.00 to the charity and wear their hair in a mad or crazy way for the day.

Participants were from various businesses and schools including A.S. Coopers, Strands Salon, Salon Pink, Argus Insurance Island Shop, Annex, HSBC Human Resources Department, Gilbert Institute, St. George’s Preparatory, Chatterbox Preschool, BHS School, Flying Colours, Axis Capital Holdings, CellOne, Devonshire Post Office P.A.L.S. staff and more.

PALS. was founded in 1980 to provide professional hands on care and support to cancer patients primarily in their own homes. The services of P.A.L.S. nurses are given free of charge, as is an array of medical equipment including electric beds, wheelchairs, and walkers.

Miss Devonshire Zaire Bean was crowned Miss Teen Bermuda Islands on Sunday night [Aug 19], and the 17-year-old will represent the island at the Miss Talented Teen Pageant in St Kitts. Friends, family and supporters packed the Fairmont Southampton as ten young ladies took the stage for the Miss Teen Bermuda Islands.

The Ruth Seaton James Auditorium played host to some of the fittest bodies in Bermuda this morning [Aug 18] as the Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation’s annual Night of Champions show got underway.

The first competitors to take the stage were the figure and fitness competitors, classes designed to cater to women with some muscle and good conditioning, but without the extreme muscle mass and conditioning needed for women’s bodybuilding.

The morning prejudging show traditionally sees the figure competitors wear black suits, however in the final round held in the evening the competitors will normally be attired in coloured suits, decorated with various embellishments. View all our coverage of the 2012 Night of Champions show here

Miss Bermuda To Compete In Miss World

Miss Bermuda Rochelle Minors will compete in the Miss World Finals tomorrow in Mongolia, China. The event will be broadcast live on television starting at 9am in the morning Bermuda time on the E! Channel [55 on CableVision].

Miss Bermuda Pageant Director Milika Trott Seymour said: “Rochelle is very appreciative of all the support she has received and excited about the finals. I encourage everyone to tune in on Saturday Aug 18, at 9am to the E! Channel to watch Rochelle participate in the Miss World Pageant.”

The 22-year-old student and fashion model was selected over seven other hopefuls last month to claim the Miss Bermuda title, and left for Ordos, Mongolia, China on July 18th.

Since her arrival in China, she has participated in a variety of events and toured parts of China including Shanghai and Changshu. A selection of photos showing Miss Minors during her travels through China is above.

Miss Minors parents and sister have flown to China to support her in the event, which will see a record 116 national representatives compete for the crown. You can view photos of all the Miss World contestants here.

The 2012 Top Model Worldwide winner Tarmar Awobotu and Top Model UK Editorial winner Aaliyah Ditchburn have both been experiencing a seven day vacation in Bermuda of the Cup Match weekend filled with activities and sightseeing.

A spokesperson said, “After an exciting build up of several months following the Top Model Worldwide 2012 competition in February, Grand Finals winner Ms. Tarmar Awobotu has finally arrived from South Africa for her seven day vacation sponsored by the Bermuda Department of Tourism.

“Accompanied by Top Model UK Editorial winner, Ms. Aaliyah Ditchburn from Manchester, England the Top Model winners are staying at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess over what has been a fun-packed and lively Cup Match holiday weekend.

“Organized by Daisy’s boutique owner Dawn Zuill and sponsored by the Department of Tourism, the Grand Prize Trip to Bermuda aims to showcase the best of the Island on a world scale.

“After arriving in Bermuda on Tuesday evening, and following a welcome reception in their honor at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Wednesday evening, the ladies have been kept busy with an event-filled week of sun, sight-seeing, beaches, celebrations, and even a $1,000 shopping spree at Daisy’s.

Video/Photos: Miss Teen Bermuda Fashion Show

The Miss Teen Bermuda Islands contestants made an appearance at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday [July 26], putting on a fashion show at the club’s Pre-Cup Match Senior’s Tea.

The fashion show was produced by pageant promoter Tee’l Productions with the young ladies wearing representative school uniforms as well as outfits from Clara-Bows, Toxic Rose and Zig Zag Boutiques.

Scores of seniors attended the function and enjoyed refreshments including brownies, sandwiches, cookies and home made iced tea. Cup Match stories and memories were shared before the contestants took to the runway.

The 2012 Miss Teen Bermuda Islands Pageant is open to teenagers aged 13 – 17, and will be held on August 19th at the Fairmont Southampton. The winner will go on to represent Bermuda in a Caribbean pageant in St Kitts.

Last weekend Miss Sandys Rochelle Minors won the 2012 Miss Bermuda Pageant and will represent the island at the Miss World Pageant in China next month. Miss Bermuda 2011 Jana Outerbridge and Pageant Director Milika Trott Seymour were on hand to crown the 22-year-old student and fashion model the new Miss Bermuda.

Miss Pembroke Chelsy Furtado was 1st runner up, Miss Devonshire Lene Hypolite was 2nd runner up, Miss Smiths Dwanae Smith was 3rd runner up, Miss Warwick Deshona Perinchief was 4th runner up, while Miss Hamilton Parish Dashunte Furbert won the Miss Congeniality title.

Crowds made their way to Hamilton on Saturday [July 7] to watch the 2012 Evolution Fashion Show, which was hosted by the City of Hamilton. The fashion extravaganza featured some 150 models strutting up and down the 80 foot runway, local entertainers, clothes from 23 retailers and hair by four salons.

Last night [July 8] Miss Sandys Rochelle Minors was crowned the new Miss Bermuda, and will represent the island at the Miss World Pageant in China next month.

The 22-year-old student beat out seven other hopefuls to claim the title. Miss Bermuda 2011 Jana Outerbridge took her final walk as Miss Bermuda onstage and – along with Pageant Director Milika Trott Seymour — crowned the new Miss Bermuda.

Rochelle Minors — a well known local model — also won the Miss Photogenic title, with that portion of the contest held last week, with local photographers including Ivan Outerbridge, Eddie Smith, Anthony Wade and C. Anthony Francis serving as the judges. Her ‘winning photo’ is pictured below [by C. Anthony Francis].

This was the second Miss Photogenic title for Miss Minors, having won the Miss Photogenic portion in the 2004 Miss Teen Bermuda, where she placed 2nd runner up.

The show was hosted by Patrina “Powergirl” Paynter and Nadanja Bailey, and the judges were Glenn Jones, Kristy “Miss Thang” Burgess, pageant promoter Terry Smith, and former beauty queens Sophia Cannonier and Colita Joseph-Cook.

The evening also included performances by teenager rapper Jelani, United Dance Productions and local singers Devaune Ratteray and Sia Spence [pictured below].

Miss Minors is a Berkeley Institute graduate, and has an Associates Degree in Art and Design with Distinction from the Bermuda College. She presently lives in London where she is studying for a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design at the University for The Creative Arts in Rochester.

A well known model on the local scene, Miss Minors has modeled in numerous fashion shows across the island since the age of 14, walked the catwalk during London Fashion Week, served as a hair model for the renowned salon Vidal Sassoon and participated in Salon International.

When asked why she entered Miss Bermuda in a prior interview, Miss Minors said, “I want to play a part in writing Bermuda’s History by representing Bermuda Internationally in the Miss World Pageant. Living in London, I am an ambassador for Bermuda everyday and always promote our island.

“I am very proud and passionate about my country. It is said that our island community is in a time of conflict with the rise of gang violence, lack of respect for others, and financial instability with the recession.

“By becoming Miss Bermuda and entering Miss World we can put these problems aside and bring our community together for one night to support their own. I have also entered this competition to boost my confidence in public speaking and to develop leadership skills so that I can be an excellent role model for young women.

“I would like to encourage others to step outside their comfort zone and try something new which can be very beneficial to their well being. Furthermore, I would like to enhance my deportment by becoming more ladylike and poised so that I can embody the qualities that Miss Bermuda should posses. With this experience I am able to accomplish these goals set forth.”

Miss Minors will compete in the 2012 Miss World Pageant in Inner Mongolia, China next month, with 120 nations expected to send representatives. You can see many of the contestants from around the world here on Miss World’s website.

Scores of people filled Hamilton last night [July 7] to watch the 2012 Evolution Fashion Show, which was hosted by the City of Hamilton.

[Updated] Scores of people turned out for the Evolution Fashion Show held last night [July 7] at City Hall. The grounds were filled with a runway extending from the front steps, and with Church Street closed to vehicular traffic, spectators lined the street with chairs or just stood to watch the show.

Vendors were set-up offering different refreshments and food. Those in attendance included Premier Paula Cox, Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge, and various Corporation members, MPs and representatives from Wilhelmina Models.

In Motion School of Dance performed and some Miss Teen Bermuda contestants made an appearance. The show went on until approximately 11.00pm and had one intermission.

Photos: Evolution Fashion Visits Harbour Nights

Scores of locals and visitors crowded Front Street last night [July 4] attending Harbour Nights and celebrating the 4th of July. Evolution Fashion Show models gave attendees a sneak peek of the upcoming fashion extravaganza which will be held on Saturday July 7, starting at 7:30pm in front of City Hall.

Hair and makeup designs were highlighted at the Harbour Nights event, with some of Bermuda’s talented hair and makeup artists had their works of art on display.

The audience was treated to styles with an American theme, with the July 4th date in mind. Completing the show was a body art competition featuring four different body art companies. Local entertainerment and a hot dog eating competition were included in the evening’s line-up with the night, which came to an end with a laser light and fireworks display.

With less than five days until the new Miss Bermuda is crowned, the contestants and organisers continue to gear up for this Sunday’s pageant.

The Miss Photogenic competition was held on Monday [July 2] evening on board the Uber Vida. The ladies were judged on confidence, personal style, the ability to produce an appealing photo and physical fitness. The high scorer from this shoot will be named Miss Photogenic on Sunday night.

Judges for the evening were photographers Ivan Outerbridge, Eddie Smith, Anthony Wade and C. Anthony Francis. Makeup was by O’Faces, hair by Impressions Hair Artistry, and the images were captured by C. Anthony Francis.

The 2012 Miss Bermuda Pageant will take place this Sunday [July 8], at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel where reigning queen Jana Outerbridge will crown her successor. Tickets are on sale now here on bdatix.bm, starting from $65.

Photos: New Thrift Store Opens In St George’s

The ‘Dress For Success’ thrift store opened their doors for the first time yesterday [June 23], with shoppers stopping by the store’s location on Old Military Road in St. Georges.

CellOne partnered with the Centre Against Abuse to open the thrift store, which aims to assist men and women with obtaining affordable professional business attire in order to help gain entry into the work force.

The boutique is an extension of the programs already in place through the Centre Against Abuse. The charity has been providing support for victims of domestic abuse through counselling, 24 hour hotline and safe accommodation to both men and women since 1979.

“We are excited to be partnering with the Centre Against Abuse to get such a worthwhile project off the ground.”, said Frank Amaral, Chief Operating Officer of CellOne.

On Sunday evening [June 3] the 2012 Miss Bermuda contestants descended on the Newstead Belmont Hills Resort on Harbour Road for a swimsuit photo session with Anthony Francis of Tekoa Photography.

Mr Francis is the official pageant photographer for the Miss Bermuda Pageant, while O’Faces is serving as the official makeup artists for the pageant, and Impressions Hair Artistry the official hair stylists for the pageant.

There are eight competitors vying for the chance to be crowned Miss Bermuda 2012; Miss Deshona Perinchief representing Warwick, Miss Lene Hypolite representing Devonshire, Miss Chelsy Furtado representing Pembroke, and Miss Dwanae Simons representing Smiths.

Contestants also include Miss Dashunte Furbert representing Hamilton Parish, Miss Shannon Ingram representing St. Georges, Miss Rochelle Minors representing Sandys, and Miss Crystal Lyn representing Southampton. View individual videos of each contestant here.

Under the direction of Milika Trott Seymour, the Miss Bermuda Pageant was brought back last year after a hiatus of over a decade. Last year’s winner represented Bermuda at the 2011 Miss World Pageant in London, and the winner of 2012 Miss Bermuda Pageant will travel to Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China to compete in Miss World.

Miss St. Georges East Jana Lynn Outerbridge won the 2011 Miss Bermuda Pageant, while Miss Smiths East Channing Dill was the 1st runner up, Miss Hamilton Parish South Rachel Sawden was the 2rd runner up, Miss Sandys Cratonia Smith was the 3rd runner up, and Miss Hamilton Parish West Sharmaine Landy was the 4th runner up.

Pageant Director Milika Trott Seymour said, “The photo shoot has a two-fold purpose, we want to make sure the ladies have experience in front of the camera and taking direction. Also, we choose the best photos of the ladies throughout the pageant process for the Miss Bermuda commemorative programs which are available at the finals on July 8th.”

The 2012 Miss Bermuda Pageant is scheduled to take place Sunday July 8th, at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel where reigning queen Jana Outerbridge will crown her successor. Tickets are on sale now here on bdatix.bm, with ticket prices of $65 for General Admission [level 3], $85 for Gold [level 2] and $105 for Patron [level 1].

The final photos produced from the photoshoot seen above will be included in the Miss Bermuda commemorative programs which will available at Pageant on July 8th.

Photos: Diamond Jubilee High Tea & Hat Show

[Updated with video] Hats of all shapes, sizes and styles could be seen gracing the Fairmont Hamilton Princess yesterday [June 3] as Project Action hosted a Bermuda Reception “High Tea” in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The fundraising event was attended by over 200 people, with Governor George Fergusson serving as the Patron. The Governor was escorted in by St. George’s Towne Crier Mr Frith, with Girl Guides flying the Union Jack and the Bermudian Flags whilst Ms. Thomas sang the entire rendition of the national anthem.

The guests were treated to musical performances by two students from the Developing Artists Program, as well as a small fashion show featuring hat styles from the past and present from the private collection of Mrs. Lucille Woolrdige and Mrs. Denise Trew.

Project Action Founding Director Mrs Cindy Swan said “I’m extremely thankful to the Governor Fergusson, the fundraising committee Ms. Eleanor furtado, Mrs. Kimesha Butterfield, Mrs. Marie Kent-Smith , Mrs. Lisa Christopher Mrs. Denise Trew and Mrs. Mair Harris who all help to make this year’s Fund-raiser a success.

“Listening to MC Mr. Robin Blackburne one would of thought you were listening to the BBC and the addition of the hat show along with a history lesson on hat by Mrs. Judith-Hall Bean and Mrs. Rose Douglas were definitely a fabulous highlight of the event. The hats shown were supplied from the private collection of Mrs. Lucille Woolrdige and Mrs. Denise Trew.

“There are some rare Queens Jubilees memorabilia including Jubilee cuff links still available from the silent auction and any one looking to add to their collection should call Project Action at 297-5044.”

The High Tea was one of the events in Bermuda to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, with the weekend also seeing a Flotilla of boats traveling from Hamilton to Dockyard, the “Lighting of Beacons” at Fort St. Catherine in St George’s, and a Service of Thanksgiving at St. Peter’s Church in St. George’s.

The Kardias Club hosted their ‘Tea with a Twist’ on Saturday [May 19] at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel, with the fundraising event including an afternoon tea, fashion show, live entertainment and more.

The Kardias Club [Registered Charity #051] selected the Committee of 25 for Handicapped Children to be their 2012 recipient, and the ‘Tea with a Twist’ was their first major fund-raiser of the year.

The ‘Twist’ included a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival, selection of traditional tea sandwiches, cakes and pastries, with a fashion show featuring the latest summer collections by Cecile’s, Boutique CC and English Sports Shop.

Local entertainment was provided by Chewstick, Sloane Wilson and Kassandra Gabrielle, with Vernon Douglas playing the piano, while Ruth Thomas served as MC.

Kardias members and friends volunteered their time to model for the event; Trudy Snaith, Nelda Cann, Shoshana Williams, Denika Reid, Cecilly Smith, Roydell Matthews, Ampha Hubbard, Sara Schroter, and Debbie Martin.

The Kardias Club is a well established women’s group which has been supporting the community of Bermuda since its inception in 1964. Over the years, through a series of fundraisers and the kind generosity of friends and sponsors alike, the Kardias Club has raised money to assist a number of local charities to achieve their goals.

Amongst their contributions to the island of Bermuda is the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII, the Packwood Home, Child’s Wish, Bermuda Autism Support and Education Society, The Family Centre, Fight for Life Foundation, Sunshine League Children’s Home, The Bermuda Sloop Foundation [The Spirit of Bermuda], and most recently P.R.I.D.E. Bermuda [their 2011 recipient] to name a few.

The Kardias Club, this year has a specific agenda to focus on charities with a service mandate to support families who have mentally and physically handicapped children in Bermuda. The Kardias Club has witnessed the support and dedication that the Committee of 25 for Handicapped Children offers to Bermuda’s families, by providing financial assistance when specialized diagnosis or treatment is needed overseas.

The Miss Bermuda Organization has released the names and photos of the 2012 pageant contestants, with seven young ladies scheduled to compete for the crown. The 2012 pageant is scheduled to take place Sunday July 8th, at the Fairmont Southampton where reigning queen Jana Outerbridge will crown her successor. Tickets range from $65 to $105 and are on sale now exclusively on www.bdatix.bm.

Rosewood Tucker’s Point Hotel unveiled the newly branded Sense spa at Rosewood Tucker’s Point with a new line of products and treatments.

Inspired by Bermuda’s rich culture, tropical environment and island spirit, the spa offers a signature array of massage, body treatments, skin care services, aqua therapy, manicures and pedicures.

“We are so excited to introduce Sense spa at Rosewood Tucker’s Point in Bermuda for both locals and visitors,” said Jennifer Haack, Corporate Director of Spa Development for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts.

“Rosewood has been rejuvenating guests at its award-winning spa destinations for over two decades and we’re thrilled to bring Sense spa to Bermuda. Based on Rosewood’s motto of Sense of Place, each Sense spa is unique to its location and honours local traditions in healing, as well as incorporates indigenous natural elements into the treatments and décor.

For instance, Bermuda honey harvested on property as well as aloe and Match Me If You Can plants from the gardens are used in various treatments. In addition, locker key chains, table displays and presentation trays are made out of Bermuda Cedar and treatment bowls are created with Bermuda blown glass.

Students at The Bermuda High School hosted a unique fashion event featuring designs made with at least 50% recycled or found materials on Friday [Mar.23] in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the school campus.

Inspired by the popular Project Runway reality competition on Lifetime hosted by Heidi Klum, the competition saw 7 teams paired with mentors from local retailers AS Coopers, Atelerie, Boutique CC, Cecile, Gibbons Company, Lovit Boutique and Orange Bay Company create designs that are made of at least 50% recycled or found materials.

Each team showed off their designs on the runway and were judged on originality, wearability, presentation and use of recycled/found materials. Judges for the event included Nike Bada, a local blogger, Amir X, former international model, and Shiona Turini, editor of Style Bermuda and “Teen Vogue” accessories editor. The host for the evening was Jennifer Burland Adams, Director of Advancement at BHS.

Photo Set #3: 2012 St Baldrick’s Event

Crowds of supporters, family and friends turned out over the weekend, to watch 48 people who volunteered to have their head shaved in exchange for donations in support of funding research to help find cures for childhood cancers, as well as to donate to the Locks of Love organisation.

The crowd cheered on the volunteers, which ranged from children to adults with hair short and long. The annual fundraising event was held at the BAA gymnasium with heads being shaved from 4:30pm until approximately 8:00pm. Those not brave enough to have their heads shaved were able to show their support with purchases of green pom poms, t-shirts, badges, bracelets, hair extensions and more.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a charity funding research to help find cures for kids with cancer. The Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research primarily through international head-shaving events. For all our coverage of the event click here.

The St Baldrick’s Foundation Charity Head Shaving event took place at the BAA Gym yesterday [Mar.16], with 48 people heaving their heads shaved in support of funding research to help find cures for childhood cancers.

Organizers said it is too early to provide a final tally of monies raised as various companies will be matching the amounts raised by their employees, however the event has already raised in excess of $200,000

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for cancer research through international head-shaving events, which see volunteers solicit financial donations in exchange for them shaving their heads in solidarity with children who lose their hair during cancer treatment.

Another event scheduled to take place on Monday, March 19th at Saltus, has gained $75,609 in pledges so far. The event will see 33 Saltus students and staff have their heads shaved at a school assembly to raise funds. View the second set of photos from this event here., and all our coverage here.

Bermuda Models Head To London

Bermuda will be centre stage in London next week when the Top Model Worldwide international model fashion search Grand Finals take place.The contest, now in its sixth year, will host models from 45 countries in the final countdown to the March 2012 Grand Finals.

And the winner will receive a trip for two to Bermuda, courtesy of the Department of Tourism, as sponsor of the Winner’s Grand Prize Package. The prize will be delivered to London by Dawn Zuill of Daisy’s boutique, which hosted a ‘send off’ for the models yesterday [Mar.7]. Collections of Daisy’s fashion lines including Analili and Garcia will be featured in the lineup of designers and labels at the Top Model Grand Finals on March 16-17.

Flying to London this week for the contest are Reigning Top Model Worldwide 2011 Winner Deandra Brangman and contestants Julia Lines, Kalena Astwood, and Katherine Arnfield.

Photos: ‘Flash Mob’ Fashion Show

Hamilton shoppers were treated to some glamorous trends when a fashion ‘flash mob’ descended on Reid Street this afternoon [Nov. 26].

Approximately fifteen models took to the streets to showcase the latest fashions, as music pumped out of speakers located on the sidewalk outside of Trends on Reid Street.

Elliot Street boutique Fatiyama — which combines vintage ’70s, ’80s and 90s fashions with modern looks — organised the “Glam Rock” event which was the third fashion show to be launched by Fatimaya and the first to use the flash mob format.

The show started outside Trends at 1pm, with models coming out of the Walkway, walking east along Reid Street, crossing the street, and strutting back down Reid Street. Crowds gathered to watch the fashion spectacle, cheering and applauding the models as they turned the streets of Hamilton into a fashion catwalk.

The Fairmont Southampton’s Ocean Club played host to “Tea on The Beach,” on Saturday [Nov.12], and gave away a 2-night stay to the winner of the ‘Best Hat’ competition. The event, which drew guests of all ages, was part of Fairmont Hotel & Resorts brand wide, “Get Steeped with Fairmont,” event marking November 12, 2011 as “Tea Day.”

Afternoon tea has long been a signature of Fairmont hotels and this global event was intended to pay tribute to the relationship between High Tea and Fairmont. The Fairmont Hamilton Princess also participated with an afternoon of live music, dancing and a series of tea inspired offerings.

Hosted by Nikita Robinson of Hott 1075 and Magic 102.7’s Sherri Simmons, The Fairmont Southampton’s “Tea on The Beach,” featured a four course tea pairing, a dazzling violin performance and a hat competition. The winner of the best hat was Mrs. Valerie Taylor, who received a 2 night stay at The Fairmont Southampton.
