Larry McDonald and Pat Brake took on and defeated Stewart Greenslade and Cliff Johnson to be crowned the 2012 Doubles Handicap Champions. In a All-Bermuda Singles Handicap Championship Final, Steven Bremar from Watford Sports Club defeated Karl Wilson from Queens Club.

The Governor arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, escorted by a police motorcade and proceeded to inspect Bermuda Regiment troops one last time as Governor. Premier Paula Cox then addressed the crowd and thanked the Governor for his service to Bermuda.

Sir Richard Gozney then expressed his thanks to the Government saying that his tenure in Bermuda had been stimulating and fun. The Governor shared his plans to attend the Olympics and said he will be cheering on the Bermudian athletes.

Sir Richard Gozney strolled the grounds greeting representatives from the Regiment, Bermuda Police Service, Parliament, judiciary, visitors and children who had gathered.

A British career diplomat, Sir Richard has been Governor and Commander in Chief of Bermuda since December 2007. Before becoming Governor of Bermuda, Sir Richard Gozney was a British diplomat for 34 years, specializing in Indonesia, Africa, the Spanish speaking world, and NATO issues, working for some twenty years abroad at British Embassies and High Commissions.

For ten of those twenty years he was an Ambassador or High Commissioner including to the Southern African Kingdom of Swaziland in the 1990s and to the Republic of Nigeria from 2004.

George Fergusson has been appointed Governor of Bermuda in succession to Sir Richard who will be retiring from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Fergusson is expected to arrive in Bermuda next week.

The pre-schoolers, decked out in their colourful holiday attire, marched from their school onto Roberts Avenue and down Parsons Road to the neighbourhood playground.

The preschool parade had the same theme as the ‘real’ May 24th parade – “Hospitality through the ages”, with the children decked in a variety of hospitality related clothing from chefs to horse and buggy drivers.

The floats consisted of the Hamilton Hotel, an old bus, a “Bird Cage” like the one on Front Street, as well as a horse and buggy carriage

Residents and other well-wishers lined the streets and cheered the toddlers on, while proud parents walked with them along the route. The parade was assisted by students from the Victor Scott School who provided drummers, as well as junior Gombeys.

In addition to the Bermuda College graduates, 16 students were awarded after taking part in the College’s partnership with Mount Saint Vincent University baccalaureate degree programme in Business Administration and Child and Youth Studies.

The 65cc Class was won by Michael Burrows, while the 85cc Class honors went to Jahdae Trott. Zamair Darrell won the Super-Mini Class.

The C Class honors for the day went to Kenneth Mathie, while Ben Zoellier finished on top of the Over 30 Class Leaderboard.

The Santo Cristo statue is carried from St Theresa’s Cathedral along Cedar Avenue, Dundonald Street, past BAA and back to the Cathedral. The Somerset Brigade Band provided music as the red-caped men, clergy and children in special costumes walked through Hamilton followed by members and friends of the island’s Portuguese community.

Zuri Phillips gave the Wildcats a three goal lead with a Field Goal in the 25 minutes, but the Budgies pulled a goal back when Alex Francis scored a 33rd minute Penalty Corner.

Latonia Fray scored her second goal of the game for the Budgies with a Field Goal in the 40th minute. The Wildcats took a 5-3 lead in the 43rd minute when Cerepha Bridgeman Penalty Corner, but Jaselle Smith pulled a goal back for the Budgies in the 50th minute with a Field Goal.

The troops have endured rain, heat, mud, mosquitoes, blisters, fatigue, and all the other pleasantries that have been part of Exercise Rum Runner 2012.

A Regiment spokesperson said, “To their credit, these young men and women have performed admirably, and are justly proud of all they have achieved. This isn’t just Regiment rhetoric either; for the past two days they have been observed by a high calibre team of VIPs.”

The Governor, who is the Regiment’s Commander-in-Chief, and Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief headed a team of VIPs as they took to the hills to observe the troops in action. Included in the group was the Honorary Colonel of the Regiment Eugene Raynor, the British Defence Attaché in Jamaica and the British Assistant Military Attaché [AMA] from Washington.

The AMA – who is a Colonel from the British Army – provides military guidance and advice to the Bermuda Regiment. Annually, he and two team members perform an audit and evaluation of the Bermuda Unit, which normally coincides with the annual Joint Service Exercise on the Island.

The audit ensures that the Regiment is following current best practice and helps identify ways that the UK Ministry of Defence may be able to provide further support to the unit.

The spokesperson continued, saying, “During their visit, the VIPs saw all aspects of the Camp: living conditions, training delivery, exercise locations, and spent time talking to the soldiers in between activities. Although the Governor has visited previous Camps in Jamaica, he was especially pleased this year with the resilience the soldiers were displaying despite their challenging operating conditions.

“His Excellency is always particularly interested in speaking to the soldiers personally and hearing their first-hand accounts of the Regiment’s activities. On his first visit to an overseas camp Minister Perinchief was very pleased with the military exercise and praised the organisation for its invaluable social benefits.

“He spoke highly of the positive effect that military training had on young people and how it bonded different sections of society into a cohesive team. The VIPs were not spared the unrelenting heat or mud and were fully immersed in the event in just a few hours; by noon their boots were as mud caked as any soldier. Making no special dining concessions for the VIPs they were issued ration packs for lunch.”

The final phase of the overseas camp is 36 hours of rest and recuperation. Although some question why it is needed, a Regiment spokesperson said, “It is an essential part of post military recovery. After almost 2 weeks participating in a gruelling exercise it is important for the soldiers to decompress before returning home.”

“In order to ensure the recovery of the equipment and baggage to Bermuda goes as safely as possible all personal items are thoroughly searched and examined. Setting the example, the senior officers are the first to have their bags checked – in full view of the Privates.

“The Regimental Sergeant Major Gavin Rayner then nominates certain personnel to become baggage checkers, including a member of the Bermuda Police Service detached to the Regiment for the duration of the Camp. The process is simple: every soldier empties everything out of their bergan onto the floor, the bag is checked, and then every item is cleared – one piece at a time.

“Once that is done, the bags are placed in a sealed and locked container which won’t be opened again until in the presence of Bermuda Customs and Police personnel including “sniffer” dogs. Although a long and labour intensive operation, the Regiment wants to ensure it does everything it can to prevent banned substances entering Bermuda.”

Haley Place won all three heats in the GP 80 Class while Kewaun Gilbert won all three heats in the Formula Class. The SuperMoto Class saw Peter Terceira win all three heats. Cody Sousa-Saints won all three heats in the SuperBike Class with new competitor Jacob Sousa finishing second three times.

The GP 125 Class turned out to be the battle of the day with Keanu Wilson winning heat one and Bruce Degrilla Jr. finishing second. Cyril Whitter III finished third and new competitor Masala Pace took the fourth position.

In heat two, DeGrilla Jr. turned the tables by winning the race after a see-saw battle for Wilson who eventually finished second while Whitter III finished third and Pace did not finish.

Heat three saw DeGrilla Jr. finish ahead of Whitter III for first place, while Wilson finished third and Pace finished fourth. In the Street Bike Class, new competitor Ryan Resendes placed first in all three heats.

Warwick Academy won the Primary School Boys Championship with a 3 – 1 win over St. George’s Prep, while Warwick Academy won the Primary School Girls Championship with a 2 – 1 win over Francis Patton.

Warwick Academy made it three wins in three Finals when they won the Middle School Boys Championship with a tuff fought 3 – 1 win over the Dellwood Middle School and then the Berkeley Institute defeated the Cedarbridge Academy 1 – 0 in the High School Boy’s Final.

A total of 71 athletes completed the challenge with Herring winning in a time of 1:25:36 and cycling sensation Dominique Mayho finishing second. Robinson held the lead from start to finish and placed 5th overall with a time 1:32:50, winning the women’s title.

Zion Dowling and Nicholas Pilgrim, were the first placed juniors in the 11-14 and 7-10 age groups, respectively.

Parents, grandparents and family and friends cheered on the little athletes as they raced along and collected their ribbons at the end, with the morning finishing off with a mothers race, fathers race and teachers race.

Seven time Carifta medalist Jesse Washington took a full second off the previous 11-12 Boy’s 50m Backstroke record when he touched the wall in a time of 31.50, breaking the old record set by Nicholas Thompson on October 23rd, 2004 when he was clocked in at 32.64.

Jack Harvey broke the 9-10 Boys 200m Backstroke Record when he clocked 44.86, breaking the old record of 45.44 set by Stefan Adderley on June 18th 2000.

In the 9-10 Girls 200m Freestyle, Amma Harvey set a new Record clocking 2:30.78, this time broke the previous record time of 2:31.44 set by Ashley Yearwood back on December 3rd, 2005.

The Middle-to-End is due to kick off at 10am from Albouys Point in Hamilton, as is the End-to-End Cycle ride from St George’s, while the Middle-To-End Cycle ride starts at 11am at Elbow Beach.

There will be a full array of equestrian events and performances by local school, dance, and musical groups over the three day event, which will also see a number of handmade and locally grown goods entered into various competitions.

In addition to competitions judging traditional plants and flowers, there are divisions for junior entrants including the miniature garden display division, which will see entrants using a recyclable milk carton used to display fresh cut or dried parts of plants.

Awards to be presented in the division include the Lady Leather Trophy, The Bermuda Horticultural Association Junior Challenge Trophy, The Bermuda Florist Rose Bowl, The Bryce Moffat Memorial Trophy, The Hibiscus Garden Club Trophy, The Paget Arbour Society Cup, The Garden Club of Bermuda Award and The Malcolm Hollis Trophy for the best stem of Bermuda Easter lilies.

Acting Sports Minister Zane Desilva, Junior Sports Minister Senator Diallo Rabain, Terry Lister, Kim Swan, Charlie Swan and Ray Charlton were on hand to welcome home the team whose exceptional performance earned a dozen medals in total; six gold, three silver and three bronze.

In addition to the impressive medal haul, the nine-strong swimming team set 51 personal best times, 16 age group records and 1 national record.

Jesse Washington was the superstar of the Games – winning a total of seven medals, was awarded the 11&12 Swimmer of the Meet and had the most points of any swimmer in the meet. His family surprised him with a ride home in a car decorated with ribbons.

The 12-year-old Sandys Middle School student won an incredible five gold medals; 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle. Washington also won silver in the 50m Backstroke and bronze in the 400m Freestyle.

12-year-old Shannon Hassell also had an exceptional performance, bringing three medals back to Bermuda. She won gold in the 200m Backstroke, silver in the 100 Backstroke and bronze in the 50m Backstroke.

17-year-old swimmers Ashley Yearwood and Benedict Parfitt then took Bermuda’s medal tally up to 12, with Ashley Yearwood winning bronze in the 50m Freestyle and Benedict Parfit claiming silver in the 50m Freestyle.

The nine member Bermuda swimming team had strong performances all around, with 17-year-old Nic Patterson just missing a medal place, with a 4th place finish in the 200m Butterfly final with a time of 2:15.36.

17-year-old Katrina Beveridge represented Bermuda in three backstroke events, while 12-year-old Aaron Rego made his first Carifta appearance, and lowered his personal best time in 100m Freestyle by 8 seconds clocking 1:11:92

15-year-old Philip Hagen also lowered his personal best, competing in the 400m freestyle. He finished off his Carifta by breaking 28 seconds for the first time in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 27:83

The youngest member of the team — 11-year-old Madelyn Moore — set a number of personal bests in her first Carifta Games appearance. She dropped 3 seconds from her personal best in the 100m Freestyle to finish in 12th place, swam a personal best of 30:39 in the 50m freestyle taking 12th, and in the 200 backstroke she dropped 7 seconds of her personal best.

The Knock Out final was between Young Men Social Club Lady Bluebirds and North Village Lady Rams with the Young Men Social Club Lady Bluebirds coming out on top 44 – 24.

In early action, New Life defeated the Young Men Social Club Blazing Bluebirds 36 – 28. The North Village Lady Rams Too defaulted to the Smooth and Easy Tigers and the DC Warriors defaulted to the North Village Lady Rams.

The Young Men Social Club Lady Bluebirds defeated the Warwick Workmen’s Club Pink Panthers 37 – 20 while the DataTech Netts defeated New Life 36 – 21.

The Smooth and Easy Tigers defaulted to the North Village Lady Rams and the DataTech Netts defaulted to Young Men Social Club Lady Bluebirds sending both winners to the Finals.

Three different drivers won a race in the day’s Senior TAG Class. Stephen Carrado won his first ever race when he crossed the line first in the Senior TAG Class first race while David Barbosa and Luis Martins won races two and three respectively.

Scott Barnes won all three races in the 125cc Shifter Class. Zanardi Daley won his first ever race in the Junior In-Clone 7-12 years old Class winning Heat 1 while Ryan Lopes won races two and three.

Amber Lopes won two of the three races in the Junior In-Clone 12 – 15 Year Old Class while Jahnazae Swan won the other.

The motocross season was delayed in starting because of plans to redesign the track, with the Association running low on funds. Correia Construction boss Dennis Correia heard of the Association’s dilemma and assisted with the rebuilding of the race track.

Keegan Jones finished on top of the Pee-Wee leaderboard, while Zano Tucker won the 50cc Class for the day.Kai-Jun Simons powered his bike to victory in the 65cc Class, with Tyquonn Perinchief taking the honors in the 85cc Class.

Otis Ingham won the 450cc Class for the day, while Ben Zoeller won the Over 30’s Class, Kenneth Matthie took the line honors in the ZC Class and Jonah Smith won the B Class.

Update: Dandy Town wins the game 5 -2. After some eight minutes Angelo Simmons from the Dandy Town Hornets had a shot come back off the crossbar with North Village Rams goalkeeper Jason Williams stranded. In the 15th minute the Dandy Town Hornets opened the scoring as Simmons beat two North Village Rams defenders and he slipped the ball into the path of Lynn Tucker who made no mistake from close range.

Five minutes later it was 2 – 0, a defense splitting pass found Dandy Town’s Sieon Darrell who beat an advancing North Village Rams goalkeeper Jason Williams. Raymond Beach made it 3 – 0 to the Dandy Town Hornets in the 30th minute when he took a pass from Simmons and beat Williams to his right.

After 37 minutes, the North Village Rams took off Lashun Dill and Kiawon Dill and replaced them with Jason Lee and Jemeiko Jennings coming on. At the half the Dandy Town Hornets hold a 3 – 0 lead over the North Village Rams.

In the 52nd minute Simmons shot went over the crossbar. One minute later Tucker was replaced by Fabion Frankson. In the 65th minute the Dandy Town Hornets went ahead 4 – 0 when Beach got on the end of a cross to score his second goal of the game.

In the 70th minute Keishen Bean pulled a goal back for the North Village Rams, when he scored from a 20 yard free kick making the score 4 – 1, one minute later Dandy Town Hornets replaced Kamen Tucker with Kowonde Lathan. North Village Rams brought off Sean Fubler and replaced him with Jahquan Smith-Deshields. Minutes later Wolde Place came on for Beach.

In the 80th minute Damon Ming raced away from the North Village Rams defenders and beat Williams to his right to make it 5 – 1, but two minutes later Ralph Bean Jr. pulled a goal back for the North Village Rams when he scored from inside the box.
