Ms Lewis just concluded taking part in several summer track meets in the US and Canada in her continuing bid to enter the 2012 Games.

Last night [May 19] at the Desert Challenge in Mesa, Arizona, she put on a dominating performance and was first across the line in all three of her races: 100m, 200m and 400m, picking up three gold medals.

She attained another personal best in her 200m, which also qualified her for the 2012 London Games.

The 19-year-old will become only the fourth athlete from Bermuda to compete at a Paralympic Games, following in the footsteps of Kirsty Anderson, Phyllis Harshaw and Sandy Mitchell who all competed in Equestrian events.

The Paralympic Games are a major international multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities held in conjunction with the Olympics.

There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games which take place immediately following the respective Olympic Games in the same host cities, and the Games are considered the highest level of competition in the world.

Ms Lewis previously made history when she became the first ever track and field athlete to represent Bermuda at a major para-sport Championships at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Mexico last year.

Update 10.32pm: Ms Lewis — and her three medals — returned to Bermuda this evening after competing in Arizona, and is pictured below with her mother and sister. Speaking at the airport, her mother said she was so excited watching her daughter perform so well in the races that she was screaming in the stands.

Ms Lewis — who has qualified for the Paralympics in the 200m — said she plans to travel back overseas on Friday where she hopes to achieve additional qualifications in both the 100m and the 400m. She said she is very close in the 100m, having clocked in at 19.13, just a shade off the qualifying mark of 19.00.

Willow Cuts 76 St. David’s Cricket Club 77/1

At Lord’s in St. David’s, the home team won the toss and sent visiting Willow Cuts to bat in a match that was reduced to 26 overs. Ricardo Brangman was the Willow Cuts high scorer with 20 as they were bowled all out for 76, while Delyone Borden was the pick of the St. David’s Cricket Club bowlers with figures of 1.4-0-5-2. In reply St. David’s Cricket Club scored 77/1 with Fiqre Crockwell the top scorer with 42 not out, George O’Brien returned bowling figures of 3-0-22-1 for Willow Cuts.

Bailey’s Bay 213/9 Devonshire Recreation Club 74

At the Somerset Cricket Club the match was reduced to 34 overs, Bailey’s Bay scored 213/9 in their allotted overs, Kyle Hodsoll was their top scorer with 24, while Kevin Abraham was the pick of the Devonshire Recreation Club bowlers with figures of 7-0-35-2. In reply Dean Richards scored 38 as the Devonshire Recreation Club were bowled all out for 74, Cal Dall returned figures of 7-2-20-5 for Bailey’s Bay.

Jessica Burton recorded the fastest 8 and Under Girls 100 Meter Freestyle with a time of 1:26.01, Skylar Trott finished second with a time of 1:31.80 and Genevieve Lau finished third clocking 1:34.29. Logan Watson-Brown finished 4th with a time of 1:36.35 and Connie Betts finished 5th clocking 1:45.11.

In the 9-10 Girls 200 Meter Freestyle Preliminaries, Ashley Irby touched the wall in a time of 1:08.84, Madson Irvine finished 2nd with a time of 1:21.53 and Holly Bruton finished third clocking 1:26.53. Fourth place went to Sklyer Powell who clocked a time of 1:27.22, while Isabel Brangman finished fifth clocking 1:29.48.

With a time of 1:04.03 Shannon Hassell won the 13-14 Girls 100 Meter Freestyle, while Anna Harrington finished second clocking 1:08.33, Susanna Armano finished third clocking 1:09.92. Somer Froud clocked a time of 1:11.20 to finish 4th and D’Andra Seymour rounded out the top five with a time of 1:11.30.

At the end of the first half, Cayman was leading 3 – 0. The first half was fairly brutal, with the Cayman Island medic on the field on more than five occasions, and two players were forced to leave the field to seek medical attention.

In the second half Bobby Hurdle went over for a try with several Cayman Island defenders hanging on, and Ian Henderson kicked the conversion to send Bermuda ahead 7 – 3.

Bermuda will match up against the Bahamas in the next match of this tournament. This year’s Caribbean Championships will be extra competitive as the winners will be going forward as the sole Caribbean representatives in the World Cup Qualifiers for 2015 in England.

Bermuda National Rugby Squad for this tournament consists of Paul Dobinson, Dustin Archibald, Jahan Cedenio, Thomas Greenslade, Mike Williams, David Rourke, Bobby Hurdle, Peter Dunkerley, Darren Richardson, Andrew Hook, Henry Paddison, Pete Dunlop, Tony Ward, Tom Healy, Ian Henderson, Lachie Armour, Paull Davis, Tom Edwards, Neville Zuill, Andre Landy, Shauntino Simons, and David Pringle.

Ms Duffy — who recently qualified for the 2012 Olympics — was easily the fastest rider in the debut of the time trial portion of the three-day series of races.

She finished in 16 minutes, 29 seconds, almost a half-minute ahead of Angela des Cognets of Golden. Heather Fischer from Boulder was third in 16:58 and Catherine Johnson of Boulder was fourth on a course with multiple challenging climbs.

The game started with the Bermuda Hogges looking to dominate play, but it was the visitors the new Jersey Rangers who had the ball in the back of the net in the 20th minute only to have it ruled out for offside.

Minutes later Hogges striker Antwan Russell had a right footed shot saved from the edge of the box, Damon Ming then watched a shot from an angle go over the bar.

The game’s first goal came in the 25th minute when Drewonde Bascome executed a timely tackle on the half way line and his pass then found Ming who rounded an advancing New Jersey Rangers goalkeeper and scored in an empty net.

With the New Jersey Rangers growing ever more frustrated with the tackling and referee decision the Bermuda Hogges failed to capitalize on the opponents distractions. Both team battled to the end of the first half with the Bermuda Hogges still holding the goal advantage.

In the second half the Bermuda Hogges and the New Jersey Rangers battle back and forth, but the New Jersey Rangers were the ones who found the back of the net when Jack McVey scored in the 75th minute. With no further goals on the contest the teams walk away with a share of the points.

BTFA President Donna Watson said, “This is going to be a phenomenal event as we will be bringing home all of our Elite athletes to compete plus overseas competition.

“All of our athletes have confirmed and the line up will be Tyrone Smith competing in the Long Jump, Arantxa King Long Jump, Aaron Evans 800m, Tre Houston 100m & 200m, Alison Outerbridge Triple, Jump, Henry Stevens-Carty 800m, 1500m, Jasmine Brunson Long Jump & Triple Jump, Ashley Berry 1500m & 3000m, Dage Minors 1500m & 3000m, Latroya Darrell High Jump and Triple Jump.

“We will also be having our Carifta medalist and Bermuda Junior Record Holder Taylor Ashley Bean competing in the 800m and 1500m. Justin Donawa our Carifta Gold Medalist will be home to compete in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. Of course our Carifta Medalist Shaquille Dill 800m and Juma Mouchette 1500m & 5000m.

“Lamont Marshall who is attempting to qualify for London 2012 in the 1500m and will also compete in the 800m. Ashley Estwanik will be competing in the 5k as she attempts to break the Bermuda National Record in that event. Of course all of these athletes are trying to reach standards for various events London 2012, CAC Jnrs and World Junior Championships.

“Most of these athletes will be coming off some great performances overseas and this would be the first time in many years that they have competed in front of their home crowd,” continued Ms Watson.

“To make this event even more exciting we have invited around 16 athletes who have accepted and will be in Bermuda to compete against our Senior Elite athletes and also some of our Junior Athletes. Several of these athletes have been in the top 3 in their Regional championships and have qualified for the NCAA Indoors and Outdoor championships.

“Tyrone will be bringing with him 2 Long Jumpers plus we have another jumper who will be competing who has jumped over 8.0m. We have several 800m female athletes who will be coming as Taylor Ashley Bean is trying to reach the qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships. 2 of Arantxa’s team mates will be coming to compete against her in the Long Jump.

“Two of Latroya’s team mates will be coming to compete in the High Jump and Long Jump. We have a few males who will be competing in the 100m & 200m with Tre Houston and hopefully Jeneko Place and Kyle Webb will benefit from this competition.

“One of Aaron’s team mates will also be traveling to Bermuda and he will be competing in multiple events. 2 of Shianne Smiths team mates will be competing in multiple events with Shianne and with them competing in the 100m will bring some competition for our 100m junior athletes who are preparing for the CAC Jnr Championships.

“We are looking forward to this being a great event to showcase our Senior Elite athletes with some of them preparing for London in front of Bermuda.

“We are excited about this and hoping that Bermudians come out and see these athletes in action. This is the first time in many years that we have had overseas competition for our championships. Of course our own Bermudians will be named the champions and the overseas athletes will be All-Comers champions,” concluded Ms Watson.

Kiera Aitken now holds the Women’s Open 50m Backstroke Record after clocking a time of 29.31 on April 1st, 2012 at the 13th Spanish Open, Malaga in Spain, while Lisa Blackburn set a new Women’s Open 100m Breaststroke Record clocking 1:11.70 on May 11th, 2012 during the Charlotte Grand Prix, in Charlotte NC.

Nicholas Patterson now holds the Men’s Open 200m Butterfly Record after he touched the wall in a time of 2:15.36 on April 16th, 2012 during the XXIII Carifta Swimming Championships in Nassau, Bahamas. The Men’s Open 100m Breaststroke Record holder is now Julian Fletcher after he recorded a time of 1:03.89 on May 11th, 2012 at the Charlotte Grand Prix, Charlotte, NC.

During the XXIII Carifta Swimming Championships in Nassau, Bahamas Ashley Yearwood set three New Records, she now holds the Girls 17-18 Year Old 50m Freestyle Record with a time of 27.40, Yearwood then established a new Girls 17-18 Year Old 200m Freestyle Record with a time of 2:10.64 and she closed out with a new Girls 17-18 Year Old 100m Butterfly Record with a time of 1:08.02.

Short Course Records – All Set May 5th at the BASA Pool

The team of Shannon Hassell, Susanna Armano, Claudia Camara and Anna Harrington now hold the 13-14 Boy’s 4×50 Medley Relay Record after clocking a time of 2:23.27, while Jesse Washington set a new Record in the 11-12 Boy’s 50 and 100m Backstroke, during the 50m Backstroke Washington recorded a time of 31.50 and then in the 100m Backstroke Washington clocked 1:10.10.

Emma Harvey also set two new Records in the 9-10 Girls Freestyle and Backstroke. In the 200m Freestyle Harvey was clocked at 2:30.78 and then in the 100m Backstroke she recorded a time of 1:19.77.

In the 8 and Under Division Genevieve Lau set a new Girls 200m Individual Medley record with a time of 3:38.99, while Jack Harvey set a new Boy’s 50m Backstroke record with a time of 44.86 and Finn Moseley’s time of 4:14.30 saw him set a new 200m Backstroke record.

Nicholas Pilgrim crossed the line first in the 100m Swim/5.2K Bike/1K Run distance event with a time of 18.22, Rudi Hammond was second at the distance clocking 19.33, while Jack Thorpe finished third in 19.59, fourth place went to Sophie Clare with a time of 21.06 and Liz Pittoni rounded out the top five clocking a time of 21.50.

The Logic 1st Division Player of the Week is Lionel Cann of Warwick Workmens Club. In the game against PHC Mr Cann guided his new club to their first victory in two years with 129 runs not out.

St. David’s Cricket Club won the toss at Devonshire Recreation Club and went to bat scoring 138/9 in their 20 overs. Loren Marshall was the top scorer with 32 while Nelson Bascome had bowling figures of 4-0-24-3 for Flatts Victoria. In reply, Flatts Victoria got off to a flyer with top scorer James Celestine hitting boundary after boundary before falling for 55, however Flatts fell 17 runs short of their mark scoring 121/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Sammy Robinson had bowling figures of 4-1-3-3 for St. David’s.

At the St. John’s Field, Bailey’s Bay batted first and scored 168/5 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply Wayne Campbell scored 38 not out but Western Stars fell 13 runs short of their target scoring 155/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Kwame Tucker was the top scorer with 34 while Allan Douglas Jr returned bowling figures of 4-0-16-3 for Cleveland County.

Zekiah Lewis won the Under 12 Girls 100 Meter Dash with a time of 13.91 while One Hart finished second clocking 14.85 and Markesiyah DeShields finished third in 15.06.

The Under 12 Boys 100 Meter Dash was won by DeAndre Warner who clocked 14.68. Clevonte Lodge finished second in 14.77 and Te’Shon Wales-Smith finished third in 14.87.

Kyrah Scraders won the Under 17 Girls 200 Meter Dash with a time of 25.79, Azaire Smith finished second clocking 26.77 and Jaymie Darrell finished third with a time of 26.83.

Michaiah Robinson won the Under 17 Boys 400 Meter Dash with a time of 53.01, while Kionje Somner finished second with a time of 54.28 and Kidane Callendar finished third clocking 54.64.

Bermuda Track and Field President Donna Watson said, “We started Friday night with Aaron Evans at the SEC Championships in Baton Rouge, Louisiana competing in the heats of the 800m and placing 1st earning him a spot in the finals which were taking place Sunday evening.

“Saturday belonged to Arantxa King at the PAC 12 championships in Eugene, Oregon in the Long jump. Arantxa led the competition up to the last jump when she was overtaken by an athlete from Arizona State with a leap of 6.45.

“Arantxa ended in 2nd place with a leap of 6.42. Aaron was next up in the 800m finals where he was up against 5 athletes from Arankas. Aaron was able to out run the entire field placing 1st in a time of 1.49.61 with the Arkansas athletes behind him in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Arantxa also competed in the Triple Jump on the Sunday and placed 3rd.

“These 2 are both on the brink of reaching the Olympic Qualifying standard and this puts them in good positions going into the NCAA championships in the next few weeks,”continued Ms Watson.

“We are also looking forward to them coming home and competing in front of their home crowd for the National Championships where there will be overseas competitors coming in to compete against them at the championships. I have no doubt that these two will be booking their tickets to London very soon.”

“Shianne Smith competed in her first Outdoor Heptathlon for the season and placed 1st with points of 4968. Shianne is preparing for the Pan American Combined Events which will be held in Ottawa, Canada May 26th & 27th in her quest to qualify for London 2012.

“Lamont Marshall continues to move closer to his qualifying standard in the 1500m towards London with a PB of 3:50.34 placing 3rd in his heat in the Wolfpack Last Chance Meet in NC Sunday. Lamont is trying to get his time down to 3:38.00 which is the qualifying standard,”concluded Ms Watson.

The PHRF handicap system allocates each boat a handicap, based on her design, and that is used to adjust her time to complete a course to her “corrected time” – the lowest corrected time wins the race.

Race 1 was a two lap race in the Great Sound. Some crews were scrambling for the race instructions as unfamiliar flags flew from the start boat, but all boats started cleanly and settled down on the long racecourse in the stiff northerly breeze. Conditions were ideal for focussing on boat speed, and seeking out favourable breeze.

“Fram” was first on corrected time, beating “Crossfire” by 22 seconds, with “Morning Glory” a further 3 seconds back.
Race 2 was another long two lap race, with “Morning Glory” beating “Smokin”, helmed by RBYC Vice Commodore Somers Kempe, by 12 seconds, and with the other Dragon design in the championship “GER1114” a further 43 seconds back.

Race 3 was a distance race, of approximately 13 miles, around various Government Marks in the Great Sound, finishing off White’s Island in Hamilton Harbour. This tested the boats in reaching conditions, where finding a lane with undisturbed air was vital to maintaining speed.

“Crossfire” was the first boat to finish after 1 hour 40 minutes, and “Cyclone” the last to cross the line after 2 hours 24 minutes, but once handicaps had been applied, “GER1114” beat “Morning Glory” by 34 seconds, with the J105 “Elusive” 48 seconds further back.

The championship was scored by rating band (for Class-2, 3 and 4), and by division (boats using either symmetric or a symmetric spinnakers), as well as the overall.

For the overall results, in third place was “Smokin”, with 13 points; in second place with 8 points “GER1114”; and in first place with 6 points the Dragon “Morning Glory” helmed by Hasso Plattner.

The Dragon design, which dates back to 1929, was the slowest boat in the fleet by handicap, but was sailed consistently in the series, in ideal conditions for this small three man boat.

There were six different yacht designs in the first seven places, illustrating that whilst handicap systems are a challenge in yacht racing, and the subject of much discussion off the water, the results were shared between modern and old designs, small and large boats alike.

The organising committee – the Bermuda Yacht Racing Association, is looking forward to this becoming an annual event on the sailing calendar.

The 65cc Class was won by Michael Burrows, while the 85cc Class honors went to Jahdae Trott. Zamair Darrell won the Super-Mini Class.

The C Class honors for the day went to Kenneth Mathie, while Ben Zoellier finished on top of the Over 30 Class Leaderboard.

On Day One Round Robin action Bermuda played two teams, a Red and a Blue Team. Bermuda Reds defeated the Cayman Islands 30 – 0 in their first match. Bermuda got two tries from Liam Page and Johnny Page, while Adam Kiernan and Nic Martin scored a Try each.

The Reds then defeated the Bahamas 30 – 0 with Liam Page scoring two more tries. Johnny Page, Nic Martin, Yizharyahs Williams and Robbie Turnbull all scored a try each.

The Bermuda Blues went down 35 – 15 to the Bahamas. Bermuda got two tries from Padraic O’Shaughnessy and a single try from Enyche Zuill. The Bermuda Blues then defeated the Barbarians 30-15. Melvin de Rosa scored two tries while Zuill, O’Shaughnessy, Zahyinde Caan and Kelin Williams all scored a Try each.

The Barbarian team is made up of players from all of the countries, thereby helping to develop teamwork, camaraderie and fair play.

In the Test Matches, Bermuda defeated the Cayman Islands 45-5. They were led by Padraic OShaughnessy who scored two tries while Nathan Morgan, Liam Page, Zayhinde Caan, Yizharyahs Williams, Melvin de Rosa, Kelin Williams and Sean Tucker all scored a try each.

Bermuda then defeated the Bahamas 25-10. Bermuda got tries in this game from Nathan Morgan, Alex Doyling, Zayhinde Williams, Kelin Williams and Jacob Robb.

Mone Fong defeated Tony Dawson 2-0, Pat Brake defeated Cliff Johnson 2-0, Richard Beale defeated Keith Smith 2-0, while Colin Brown defeated Keith Windsor 2-0.

Tournament number one seed Ahmed El Sayed — a former U.S. National Snooker Champion — defeated Kenny Shea 2-0, the match between Maurice Hawkins and Richard Beale ended 1-1 and Jamie Brunn defeated John Carswell 2-0.

Paul Flemming defeated Rick MacKenzie 2-0, Peter Bromby and Richard Strand finished 1-1, as did the match between Aaron Bean and Jamie Brunn. Paul Flemming defeated Karl Wilson 2-0.

Isa Ismaili and Maurice Doucet 1-1 played to a 1-1 draw, while Aaron Bean defeated Timmy Sousa 2-0 and the match between Ken Shea and Steve Bremar ended 1-1.

Allen had an early battle with Juma Mouchette, but he was able to pull away from the defending champion to cross the line first in a time of 16:03, Mouchette finished second in 16:56 and Gideon Kigotho finished third clocking 17:14.

Fiddick finished sixth overall to tale the Ladies title with a time of 19:26, while Rebecca Kuruvilla was the second Female finisher with a time of 21:58 that saw her finish 13th overall and Kimiko Scotland was the third Female finisher clocking a time of 22:16 finishing 17th overall.

The race is named after legendary runner Stanley Burgess, a multiple time winner of the May 24th Marathon in the 1940s and 50s. His 1951 win came at age 49, making him the oldest runner to win the race.

He competed in the race for a approximately sixty years, from 1921 to 1983 running well into his 80s. A perennial crowd favourite, in later years the crowd was well known not to leave until the elderly Mr Burgess finished the race

A total of 71 athletes completed the challenge with Herring winning in a time of 1:25:36 and cycling sensation Dominique Mayho finishing second. Robinson held the lead from start to finish and placed 5th overall with a time 1:32:50, winning the women’s title.

Zuri Phillips gave the Wildcats a three goal lead with a Field Goal in the 25 minutes, but the Budgies pulled a goal back when Alex Francis scored a 33rd minute Penalty Corner.

Latonia Fray scored her second goal of the game for the Budgies with a Field Goal in the 40th minute. The Wildcats took a 5-3 lead in the 43rd minute when Cerepha Bridgeman Penalty Corner, but Jaselle Smith pulled a goal back for the Budgies in the 50th minute with a Field Goal.

In the Under 14 match the Orange Team coached by Kimale Evans defeated the Royal Blue Team coached by Erika Russell 15 – 12.

The Baby Blue Team coached by Gina Benjamin won the Under 16 match 18 – 15 over the Purple Team coached by Jeananne Hardtman.

Coaches Tanika White and Karlandra Smith guided the Green Team to a 15 – 13 win over the Pink Team coached by Annette Mirfield and Stacy Grant.

This will mark the second time Duffy has made an Olympics appearance, as she represented the island at the 2008 Olympics held in China.

Duffy came out of the water six seconds behind the eventually winner Helen Jenkins with a time of 18:34. Duffy then recorded the third fastest bike time when she was clocked with a time of 1:04:52. Duffy’s run course time of 35:59 saw her finish sixth overall.

Helen Jenkins from Great Britain clocked a time of 1:58:21, while Erin Densham from Australia finished second with a time 1:59:26. Laura Bennett from the USA finished third clocking a time of 2:00:11, with Jessica Harrison from France finishing fourth with a time of 2:00:14 and Vicky Holland from Great Britain finished fifth with a time of 2:00:28.

The powerhouse runner set her latest record at a meet held in Salem, Virginia yesterday [May 10]. Bean clocked a time of 2:10.53 to better the 800m record she set this past Sunday, which also served to move her to sixth place on the NCAA Division II national rankings list.

Bean has set four Junior National Records at three different distances in the past six weeks:

• March 30 – set a new 1500m record of 4:42.82 displacing the previous record [of 4:45.90] set by older sister Alexis in 2009
• April 9 – set a new 3000m record with a time of 10:22.82 during her silver medal performance at the Carifta Games
• May 6 – broke the 800m record with a time of 2:12.72, replacing the former mark of 2:13.51 set by older sister Alexis in 2008.
• May 10 – ran a new 800m record of 2:10.53, bettering her previous record set five days previously, by 2.19 seconds.
