Principles Foundation Design Competition

December 3, 2019

The Bermuda Principles Foundation, sponsored by the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs, is calling on local artists to compete in a design competition.

A spokesperson said, “Local artists of all ages are invited to submit a cover and back design for a limited-edition publication on genetics history made in Bermuda.

The Bermuda Triangle: The Pragmatics, Policies and Principles of Data Sharing in the History of the Human Genome Project, an article detailing the history and impact of the Bermuda Principles on global medical research was published last year, making note of the Bermuda Principle Foundation’s work to inspire the next generation of scientists in Bermuda.

“To commemorate the history made in Bermuda, we decided to do a limited-edition printing of this article as a book. To give the book our local flare, we are looking for talented local artists to design the cover and back art of the book. Sponsored by the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs, this project is set to bridge the gap between the sciences and art.

“Only five copies will be printed. One copy of this specially printed book will be personally signed by lead Princeton PhD researcher Kathryn Maxson Jones, her two supervisors Dr Rachel Ankeny and Dr Robert Cook-Deegan and a special 1996 attendee, the former CEO of the Wellcome Trust who funded the original gathering, Dr Michael Morgan.

“This book will be auctioned off at the charity’s Awards Gala on February 8, 2020. The other four copies are not for sale and will be displayed in public libraries, the Department and the charity.”

Art Competition Bermuda Dec 2 2019

“This is an exciting opportunity to merge two distinct fields: science and art. Although they seem very distant there is already a marriage between art and science,“ said Dr Carika Weldon, Founding Trustee and Chairman of The Bermuda Principles Foundation.

“In fact, as a scientist, I need to illustrate my research all of the time—and that requires using art. This is particularly true when we are publishing scientific papers or giving talks around the world at conferences because we include figures to help our audience better understand our work.

“One of the core objectives of The Bermuda Principles Foundation is to bring the relevancy of science to every aspect of our lives. By doing so, it is our hope we can expand the perception of science to not only be about medicine but showcase how diverse science truly is. From art to law, there is room for inter-disciplinary collaboration.”

The spokesperson said, “The art competition is another way to help broaden the understanding of science and highlight the importance of art to the field. By entering the competition, local artists will be able to extend the range of pieces in their portfolio and expand their audiences on a global scale. There will be over 150 guests at the Gala, with 80 being internationally renowned scientists.

“There will be two separate winners: one for the front cover and one for the back cover. Each winner will receive a $300 cash prize, a free ticket to the Bermuda Principles Awards Gala, and a guaranteed placement in our silent auction, with the option to sell items after the event.

“The winning artwork will be publicized by Springer Nature, the world’s largest science publisher with over 240 million downloads per annum, who initially published the article last November in the Journal of the History of Science.”

Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports, Lovitta Foggo, said, “The Bermuda Principles Foundation has successfully collaborated with several local and international organizations to broaden participation in the conference.

“In preparation for their 2020 conference, the Ministry is pleased to partner with the Foundation to provide this opportunity for our Bermudian creatives to share their talent internationally.”

The spokesperson said, “To provide our winners further exposure internationally, the silent auction will first launch online, with bids starting two weeks prior to the live auction. Invitations to bid will be sent out to our global mailing list and pushed on social media platforms.

“To enter, please apply here by 5.00pm on Friday, January 3, 2020.

“Members of the public are also invited to gain international exposure for their Bermuda brands by applying to join the silent auction and may sign-up here by December 13, 2019.”

“The Bermuda Principles is a part of our heritage and it was a hidden historical fact for years,” said Dr Weldon.

“Through the Bermuda Principles Foundation, we strive to bring the Bermuda Principles to the front stage and put Bermuda back on the science map. We want to include more Bermudians in this story, and hope local artists are inspired to enter.”
