Law Students Pay Tribute To Stephen Edwards
The Law Students’ Association of Bermuda have paid tribute to the late Stephen Edwards, who was a law student of the University of Sussex, saying he was acutely interested in making a contribution to his country and poised to be a future leader.
Mr. Edwards, 19, died following a serious motorcycle collision that occurred on December 30, 2014. A successful young man both academically and athletically, Edwards was an honour student at Berkeley Institute, received a scholarship to study law, was a former captain of the Bermuda National U/18 sevens rugby team and received the ‘Young Player of the Year Award’ at his school in the UK.

Audley Quallo, President of the Association, said: “My brief exchange with Mr. Edwards demonstrated that he had a unique perspective on life, domestic and global issues and that he was acutely interested in making a contribution to his Country. I was poised that he would indubitably be a future leader in Bermuda and world class advocate within the law courts.
“The Law Students’ Association of Bermuda wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Mr. Stephen Edwards, a law student of the University of Sussex. I had the unique opportunity in holding a dialogue with Mr. Edwards in the summer of 2014 when he received the prestigious Conyers Dill & Pearman legal scholarship.
“My brief exchange with Mr. Edwards demonstrated that he had a unique perspective on life, domestic and global issues and that he was acutely interested in making a contribution to his Country. I was poised that he would indubitably be a future leader in Bermuda and world class advocate within the law courts.
“The legal profession of Bermuda has certainly been deprived by the future addition of Mr. Edwards. I also observed Mr Edwards’ avid participation and contribution in the sports arena as a rugby player. Indeed his untimely death painfully strikes many of us who Stephen encountered.
“He had a gentle and polished attitude and certainly was one whose company was a pleasure to be around. Our prayers are with his family and friends and to all who have been impacted by Stephen’s sudden loss.
“On a personal note, with the recent epidemic of road fatalities and carnage amidst our island, I have been morally prompted to canvas with political leaders in commencing dialogue for the benefit of exploring strategies and legislative amendments to current statutes that may aid in the deterioration of road traffic collisions and establish stern examples in our courts to deter persons considering contravening our road legislation,” added Mr. Quallo.
