A 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting on Good Friday [Apr.6] at Somerset Cricket Club, and has been released on bail.

A police spokesperson said, “Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the reported gunshots that occurred around 2:45am Friday 6th April 2012 at Somerset Cricket Club in Sandys parish. Initial information suggested one man was injured as a result.

“It was later confirmed that two men, a 41 year old and an 18 year old were injured; however both received minor wounds. It is not clear at this time if their injuries were as a result of the reported gunshots; and this remains a focal point of the investigation. Both men were treated at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and discharged.

“The scene has been forensically examined and items have been seized for processing. A 39 year old man was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident and bailed pending further inquiries.

“There were many people at the venue at the time of the incident, and detectives are very interested in speaking with anyone who was at the function before, during, or after the incident.

“This appeal is also extended to anyone with any information regarding this matter – and you are encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1739, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

Mr Walker was attending a ‘family fun day’ with his two young children at Victor Scott school field on April 2, 2010. At around 2pm he was flying a kite with his two young children when two men on a motorbike burst onto the field and opened fire at him, shooting seven bullets into him as he tried to flee.

Mr Walker’s mother Michelley Walker has previously spoken out saying, “One moment he was frolicking with his children, teaching them to fly kites and generally enjoying his time with them.

“The next moment he was running for his life as he was being chased by persons with a gun determined to end his life – and this they did, while his children ages 9 & 4, watched in horror.

“They will forever have the memory of seeing him shot down like an animal in their hearts and their minds. To see the pain on their faces breaks what’s left of my heart.”

Video compilation from last year’s vigil in memory of Mr Walker:

Mrs Walker appealed for peace and asked people to speak up for the families and the children of those of have been left fatherless. She called for the community to end gun violence, and said she prays for God to look over everyone.

To date, no one has been brought before the courts for Mr Walker’s murder, and the case remains open. Police have determined that the offenders were riding a light coloured 125 scooter, one of the shooters had a green scarf over his face, and one of the shooters possibly had scarring

Police continue to work on the case, and have appealed many times for anyone with any information about the murder of Kimwandae Walker to come forward, especially anyone who may have video and or photos from Victor Scott field that day.

Anyone with any information on Mr Walker’s murder is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477 or via their website, where tips can be left anonymously.

The incident took place at approximately 3:50am on Saturday [Mar.24], and resulted in shots being fired into Sir John Swan’s Seon Place office building.

A police spokesperson said, “It appears that two persons on a dark coloured motorcycle wearing dark coloured helmets were travelling in a westerly direction on Cavendish Road before discharging several shots in the Reid Street, Spurling Hill area. The suspects then made a U-turn and travelled in an easterly direction down Spurling Hill.”

“At the time of the shooting there were numerous patrons attending and leaving a nightclub in the area who may have witnessed the incident.”

“Investigators would like to speak to any patron, motorist or pedestrian who may have been in the vicinity at the time. Any person who has any information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1365 or the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.”

Update 12.51pm: The police said they have recovered a motorcycle and other items that they believe were used in this crime, the full statement follows below:

Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit are also continuing their investigations into the shooting that occurred outside ‘Shine’s’ club on Reid Street in the early hours of Saturday morning at about 3:50am.

Officers investigating the incident have recovered a motorcycle and other items that they believe were used in this crime. Forensic testing of these items has been conducted as detectives pursue lines of enquiry regarding the perpetrators, in order to bring them to justice.

We are keen to speak with anyone that may have witnessed the shooting that has not already been seen by the police, or anyone that has any information relating to the incident. Anyone who has any information is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1365 or the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.

[Updated with video] There was a shooting at approximately 3.45am this morning [Mar.24] in the Reid Street extension area of Hamilton opposite Shine’s, which resulted in shots being fired into Sir John Swan’s Seon Place office building.

Unofficial reports indicate that no one was injured, and that the shooting was done by suspect[s] on a motorcycle. Police responded to the incident, and remain on the scene. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.

Update 6.03am: The police confirmed the incident and said forensic evidence has been collected confirming shots were fired. Police also confirmed that no injuries have been reported.

Update 6.26am: The photos below show a bullet hole in the side of the John Swan office building, located at the very end of Reid Street extension heading towards East Broadway. There appear to be two bullet holes in two separate windows.

Seon Place is a 10-storey office building, making it the tallest building in Hamilton. Work on the building began in 2008, and was completed in 2010.

Update 6.58am: The full police statement follows below:

Around 3:45am on Saturday, March 24th police responded to reports of gunshots on Reid Street Extension in the City of Hamilton.

Forensic evidence collected at the scene and damage to a building in the area confirmed a firearm had been discharged; however no one was injured. The suspects are believed to be two men on a motorcycle.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Update 7.37am: Video of police spokesman Robin Simmons and a pan of the scene is below. When asked if Sir John had been notified Mr Simmons said he was not aware of that at that time [6am], but he expected it was done, or would be done in due course.”

A ZBM reporter pointed out that at 3.45am on a weekend late night revelers may have been in the area and asked if there were witnesses. Mr Simmons declined to give further information citing the early nature of the investigation, but did confirm they believed the shooting was committed by two men on a bike.

22-year-old Anwar Muhammad was sentenced to 25 years in prison today [Mar.14], after being convicted of attempted murder earlier this year.

Mr Muhammad was charged with the shooting of Princeton Burrows in August of 2010 in Sandys parish. Mr Burrows was shot while at the junction of Middle Road in Sandys and Woodlawn Road [outside Maximart] at 3.45pm on August 23, 2010.

A statement issued by the police said, “The Bermuda Police Service would like to acknowledge the sentence meted out by the Supreme Court today, in respect of Anwar Muhammad who was previously convicted of Attempted Murder & Firearms offences.

“The sentence of 25 years (15 years and 10 years respectively, to run consecutively) reflects the serious nature of the gang violence that has been plaguing the Island for the past 3 years.

“Cases involving gang violence in the upper courts are currently experiencing an approximate conviction rate of 75%, which speaks to the quality of the prosecuting team in the office of the DPP, the nature of the evidence presented, the willingness of witnesses to come forward and the investigative ability of our officers generally.”

[Updated] 36-year-old Derek Spalding was sentenced to life in prison this morning [Mar.7], and must serve 38 years before he will be eligible for parole.

Earlier this month he was found guilty of the murder of Shaki Crockwell, a national level football player who was murdered in 2007. The 25-year-old’s body was found on the Railway Trail in Devonshire on 24th August 2007.

The trial began on January 24th, with the jury hearing that Mr Spalding shot the victim as he owed him money from selling drugs.

Mr Crockwell and Mr Spalding initially met while they were both serving prison time, and the two men decided on an arrangement in which the victim would sell drugs for the defendant upon his release from prison, as he was scheduled to be released first.

The Prosecutor said the defendant was owed money by Mr Crockwell, and arranged to meet the victim on the Railway Tracks saying he would give him a package of drugs. The two men met on the Tracks, and Mr Spalding shot Mr Crockwell.

Mr Spalding will be eligible for parole in 2050, when he will be 74 years old.

Update: Before passing a life sentence on Derek Spalding, Justice Carlyle Greaves described Spalding as a cold, calculating, manipulative assassin for whom there was a substantially remote chance of rehabilitation.

Justice Greaves said that on discovering the change in the law that allowed parole after one-third of a sentence had been served, Spalding had got himself into every prison program that he could and had persuaded authorities that he had found a new path.

On his release on licence in 2007, authorities had found him a job as a ferryman with Marine & Ports. In this job, the evidence was that he had used the ferry to carry on his drug-dealing with Shaki Crockwell.

The Justice said that many Bermudians found themselves on the US Stoplist after they had run afoul of Bermuda laws but that Spalding, with his many convictions, had managed to circumnavigate the Stoplist and get into the USA by joining the crew and using the “Spirit of Bermuda” to smuggle guns and drugs back into Bermuda.

Justice Greaves said that this action showed Spalding’s ability to scheme and manipulate and that his action damaged the reputation of the good ship and the ship and its program would take years to recover.

The full sentence handed down by Justice Greaves was that Spalding was sentenced to life in prison and must not be considered for parole until he had served thirty-eight years.

This was the sentence handed down for the first count of premeditated murder. Justice Greaves awarded a second sentence of ten years for the second count of using a firearm to commit a crime. This ten year sentence was to run concurrent with the life sentence.

The Police said the gun incident last night [Feb.23] outside Hamilton Police Station “might be gang-related,” and “the potential for a reprisal attack cannot be discounted.” In response, the police will increase operations island-wide this weekend, with road checks at various locations.

At around 5.30pm last night the pillion passenger on a motorbike brandished a gun at another motorist in the area outside the Hamilton Police Station on the corner of Court Street and Victoria Street.

A police spokesperson said, “There are initial indications that the firearms incident reported Thursday evening in the vicinity of the Hamilton Police Station might be gang-related. The potential for a reprisal attack cannot be discounted. Therefore, the Bermuda Police Service will increase operations throughout the island commencing this weekend.

“This increased police activity will include road checks that will take place at various locations. This will no doubt cause some inconvenience and we ask the public for their patience and cooperation. We also encourage the public to assist police efforts by reporting any suspicious activity.

“The incident on Thursday was committed, once again by two men on a motorcycle. Therefore any sightings of men on motorcycles, or fast moving convoys of vehicles under suspicious circumstances should be reported to the police.

“Anyone with any information regarding Thursday’s reported firearm incident or anyone who may wish to report any suspicious activity is urged to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1079 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

A poster saying saying “Noet Barnett, don’t think people don’t care” was visible in the St Monica’s Mission area this past weekend. The poster — adorned with ribbons on both sides — continues on to say “You can’t read, but Bermuda can.” The poster is signed, “From someone who cares, not only your mother”

Mr Barnett, 25, was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week after being found guilty of attempted murder, and must serve half his sentence before being eligible for parole. The prison sentence comes after he was convicted of shooting Jeremiah “Rocks” Dill in October 2010.

During the trial the Court heard that Mr Barnett was affiliated with 42, while the shooting victim was said to be affiliated with Parkside.

Ms Sheelagh Cooper, a well-known social advocate, wrote a letter on Mr Barnett’s behalf which was read out in Court. She had first come into contact with him when he was a very young child and just after his father had been murdered.

Ms Cooper pointed out that Mr Barnett’s life had not been a good one and that it seemed to have begun with an inability to even give him a correct name. She said that, born close to Christmas, his mother wanted to name him Noel. However, a typographical error at the Registry Office resulted in his legal registered name being Noet.

She described how he and his siblings had grown up in crowded living conditions, had been homeless for a while, his mother had been sent to prison for four years, an uncle had been murdered, he had not done well at school and had been expelled from school when he was 14.

Ms Cooper said, in her letter, that attempts to get the Ministry of Education to supply or arrange counseling services or psychological evaluations had not succeeded and that Noet had learning difficulties at Dellwood Middle School.

She also said that in the two years before his arrest for this attempted murder, he had been shot at three times.

[Updated with videos] 36-year-old Derek Spalding was found guilty of the 2007 murder of Shaki Crockwell this afternoon [Feb.10].

Shaki Crockwell — a national level football player and captain of the Boulevard Blazers — was found dead on 24th August 2007. The 25-year-old’s body was found on the Railway Trail in Devonshire.

The trial began on January 24th, with the jury hearing that Mr Spalding shot the victim as he owed him money from selling drugs.

Mr Crockwell and Mr Spalding initially met while they were both serving prison time. Mr Spalding was released from prison in 2007, after serving 11 years for armed robbery.

The Court heard the two men had decided on an arrangement in which the victim would sell drugs for the defendant upon his release from prison, as he was scheduled to be released first.

The Prosecutor said the defendant was owed money by Mr Crockwell, and arranged to meet the victim on the Railway Tracks saying he would give him a package of drugs. The two men met on the Tracks, and Mr Spalding shot Mr Crockwell – who was wearing a bullet proof vest when he was found.

A female witness testified during the trial that the victim had taken to wearing a bullet proof vest a few weeks before he was killed, and during that same time also seemed nervous and constantly watching who was around him.

Also testifying during the trial was Randy Lightbourne, who said he met both the victim and the defendant while all three were in prison. He said Mr Crockwell was selling drugs for Mr Spalding, and that the victim owed Mr Spalding money.

Mr Lightbourne testified that Mr Spalding confessed to him, however he did not reveal the information until some time later when he was shot, thought he would die and should do the right thing.

Mr Lightbourne was shot multiple times outside a West End bar on July 23, 2010, with Marico Bassett later convicted of the crime and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Mr Spalding denied Mr Lightbourne’s claims, saying he was an “evil” man.

Mr Spalding’s father also testified that his son confessed to murdering Mr Crockwell, which his son refuted saying his father had not been closely involved in his life. Prisoner Kirk Mundy – who was arrested for the Rebecca Middleton murder – also took the stand during the trial. Mr Spalding was remanded in custody, and will be sentenced at a later date.

Speaking after the verdict, Shaki Crockwell’s father said, “Justice has been served. My son can rest in peace.”

[Updated - At 10.30am shots were fired in the Mount Hill, Pembroke area. The suspects stole a blue motocross cycle and headed to Somerset while multiple police vehicles pursued them through the western parishes at high speeds.

Schools in the West End were temporarily placed under a police-imposed lock down. A 20-year-old Sandys parish man has been arrested in connection with this incident]

A short while ago this morning [Jan.25] police attended the Mount Hill area in Pembroke responding to what we unofficially understand may have been a firearm incident.

At this time, the police are in the area and crime scene tape is visible. There are at least four marked and unmarked vehicles, and multiple officers.

The area they blocked off is the same area from previous firearm incidents, and we were asked not to take photos. Unofficial reports indicate that no one was injured, however we will update with additional information as able.

Update 11.10am: Unofficial reports indicate the police are chasing the suspects all the way to Somerset. Numerous reports indicate that massive amounts of cars and sirens were heard in Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Somerset – with unofficial reports of a dozen or more police vehicles speeding towards the west.

Update 11.22am: Police confirmed there was a shooting at 10.30am in the Mount Hill area, and said there were no injuries. They also confirmed that the Police chased the suspects in a westerly direction.

Update 11.25am: The suspect[s] stole a motocross cycle and headed west with the police in pursuit.

Update 11.31am: Due to reports received that Somerset Primary School is on “lockdown”, we confirmed with school officials that all the staff and students are fine. An Education Ministry Spokesperson said, “The Ministry takes its lead from the Police and they have advised, and we are following, to keep students in school until they advise further.”

Update 12.02pm: The police confirmed that there were shots fired around 10:30am today in the Mount Hill, Pembroke area. No one was injured; however the suspects stole a blue motocross cycle and fled while the police pursued them into the western parishes.

[Updated] The Supreme Court trial of 36-year-old Derek Spalding is now underway, with the jury hearing this morning [Jan.24] that the defendant allegedly shot the victim as he owed him money gained from the sale of illegal drugs.

25-year-old footballer Shaki Crockwell — a national level football player and captain of the Boulevard Blazers — was found dead on 24th August 2007. He had been shot in the neck, with his body was found on the Railway Trail in Devonshire.

The court heard that Mr Crockwell and Mr Spalding initially met while they were both serving prison time.

The Prosecutor alleged the two men had decided on an arrangement in which the victim would sell drugs for the defendant upon his release from prison, as he was scheduled to be released first.

The Prosecutor further alleged that the defendant felt that he was owed money by Mr Crockwell, and arranged to meet the victim on the Railway Tracks to give him a package of drugs.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos said when the two men met, Mr Spalding shot Mr Crockwell – who was wearing a bullet proof vest when he was found.

The first witness took the stand, and said he heard gunshots on the evening of 24th August 2007. He said he started to investigate, but lost his nerve and went home.

The second witness – Randy Lightbourne – said he met both the defendant and the victim in prison, and that he was friends with both of them.

After both men were released, the witness said he maintained contact with them by cell phone from inside the prison.

He said he knew Mr Crockwell was “juggling” [selling drugs] for Mr Spalding, and that the victim told him someone broke into his house, stole the drugs and money, and that he was in debt to the defendant.

He continued to to say that after Mr Crockwell got a new car, and that instigated Mr Spalding’s anger over the money he said was owed to him.

Mr Lightbourne also said Mr Spalding was engaged in the business of selling drugs while on work release from Westgate, as well as living in a transitional living center.

The jury was shown a series of photos of the victim, with some very graphic in nature.

Mr Spalding is charged with premeditated murder and with using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. He denies the charges.

His death leaves a mother grieving the loss of the second of her twin sons within a six-year period, with Stefan’s twin brother Ryan Burgess having predeceased him in 2006.

The then 18-year-old was killed in a road traffic accident on Parsons Lane. The twins are pictured together on the left.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon [Jan.9], Det. Ins. Peter Charlemagne said the police have two men in custody in connection with Mr Burgess’ murder; a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 39-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Shortly after Mr. Burgess’ death last night tributes began appearing on the social media site Facebook, with many posters expressing horror that his mother would have to bury another son. Others tearfully noted that the twins have now been reunited.

Mr. Burgess leaves behind a girlfriend and a young daughter, Ryann, who is named after his late brother. He was described by friends as a very devoted father.

At approximately 9 pm last night [Jan.8] Mr Burgess was shot multiple times while at a residence in the Glebe Road, Pembroke area. He, along with another shooting victim, was rushed to hospital, where Mr. Burgess was pronounced dead. The other wounded man — also in his 20s — is not believed to have life-threatening injuries. His condition is listed as stable.

Update 2.43pm: The video of the police press conference is below:

Update 2.59pm: Assistant Commissioner David Mirfield said, ”This is the first gun murder for 8 months, firearms offences in general have reduced considerably, having said that I know how things can spiral very quickly, there has been a marked increase in gun violence over the past month, and once again there is a tit for tat element to it.

“As a result of that we have put more officers both armed and unarmed on the streets, and we will continue to use all lawful opportunities to suppress gang activity.

“While I cannot say with certainty that this was a gang related shooting, the likelihood is that gang affiliations could have played a part. We are not treating this as a random attack and believe that the address and/or the occupants were targeted. We remain open minded on the potential motive.”

Det. Ins. Peter Charlemagne said, “Following receipt of certain information and subsequent arrest operations this morning, I can confirm one man was arrested on suspicion of murder, and the other was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder, and are currently in custody. One male is aged 25 and the other is aged 39 years old.”

The suspects are described as wearing dark clothing, with dark helmets and tinted visors. No weapons have been recovered, and the crime scene remains under police guard.

The enquiry team is anxious to speak with anyone in The Glebe Road, St. Monica’s Road and North Shore Road, Pembroke area that may have seen a person or persons on a motorcycle and also on foot in these areas between 8:30pm and 9:15pm on the evening of Sunday January 8, 2012.

Anyone with any information on last night’s shooting is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1079, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

[Updated] National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief, Governor Sir Richard Gozney and the Commissioner of Police are scheduled to meet this afternoon [Jan.9] in the wake of last night’s shooting which claimed the life of a 24-year-old-man.

“The senior command of the Bermuda Police Service will brief us on this latest incident and the status of the investigation,” the Minister said.

“Senseless and tragic,” is how Minister Perinchief described the incident, which marked both the first shooting and the first murder of 2012.

“Another family is mourning today and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they come to grips with this tragic, sudden loss. I am confident that the Police will investigate this matter thoroughly and work around the clock to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

“The people of Bermuda have demonstrated their support for strong action by the Police and for my part, I shall continue to make clear the Government’s support for enforcement action that disrupts the rhythm of gang activity and makes the gang lifestyle an untenable choice for young people in this community,” concluded the Minister.

Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier said, “Our deep sympathy, our thoughts and our prayers are with the families and friends of the two men who were shot, especially those of the young man who died.

“If this assault was gang-related, it underscores the revulsion all sane people in Bermuda must feel at the senselessness and the stupidity of the gang lifestyle. I am constantly amazed that it is young Bermudian men from Bermudian families who are involved, because this ugly, more or less random violence is not a part of the Bermudian culture I grew up in.

“We must, as a community, commit ourselves to making sure that we rid Bermuda of this curse. That means, at the very least, helping the Police as much as we possibly can to bring those involved to justice. Unless we do that with courage and with determination, we will doom ourselves to this kind of suffering for good.

“I am dreading the thought that our young children might begin to think that getting involved with gangs and the violence they cause is normal, a required rite of passage into adulthood, because that will just about destroy any hope we have of putting a stop to it.

“At this time I urge my colleague, the Minister of National Security, the Hon Wayne Perinchief, to redouble his efforts to get all the elements of his plan to combat gang violence into place, including Operation Ceasefire, a measure the One Bermuda Alliance believes will do vital work in the struggle we are all involved in,” concluded Mr Cannonier.

Area MP Walter Roban said, “I wish to express my sadness that the residents of The Glebe Road, Pembroke East area were once again faced with an act of senseless violence on their doorsteps on the night of January 8, 2012. It is also a tragedy that another young Bermudian male is the victim and another family has lost a loved one.”

“It is of the utmost priority that the perpetrators be apprehended and face the full extent of the law and justice system. The island of Bermuda, all her residents and the government have clearly expressed zero tolerance for this behavior and we support all the efforts of the Police Service and others to stem violent crime in our community.

“I encourage anyone who may have information that will assist in solving this crime to cooperate with the authorities. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim,” said Mr Roban.

At approximately 9pm last night the shooting occurred in the Glebe Road area of Pembroke, and saw two men injured. Both were rushed to hospital, where the 24-year-old man died as a result of his injuries. The other victim is not believed to have life threatening injuries. The Police have not yet officially named the murder victim, however it is anticipated they will do so later today.
