Congratulations to the Bermuda Reading Association for supporting this books as presents opportunity. Too many people don't realize that children from low-income families rarely own books of their own. Because of this they rarely read outside of the school building. Our research has shown that simply providing poor children with free books during summer vacation periods produces as much gain in reading achievement as send those children to summer school for 6 to 8 weeks. Additionally, providing these free books costs less than 1/20th of cost of summer school. I hope the BRA continues this effort every Xmas and perhaps even expands the effort to include summer reading books.
