Laws get old, they need to be changed on a regular basis to adjust for changes in social dynamics. See how they treated alcohol like marijuana in the 20′s. well now we all drink it. Time to do the same for weed because all criminalizing it has done is created cartels which profit from its illegal distribution and use violence as a means of punishment. Here it is my son as an aspiring musician when he got caught with 0.08 grams of Cannibis his name went on the stop list,he has since which applied for numerous waivers and gets denied every time because of this offence ( 0.08 grams of weed )which is also hindering him from travelling to U.S and Canada and here this guy is caught red handed with a Bob Marley cone in a increased penalty zone and gets off ? I dont mean to sound like this but we the public would like to know how does this man get off scott free when its alot of STRUGGLING Bermudians penalized for lesser offences O I Forgot he’s an (White Collar Corporate)accountant wewwwwwwwww? does that make him any different from any other person ( CLEARLY)!So I’m supposed to be Geek accountant to beat charges like this or did he just have the inside hook up??? So, Alcohol, Cannabis Sativa is cool consumed within reason but alcohol should be banned becuase it legal and Cannabis Sativa should be legal because it hurts knowone.

I think the more disturbing trend is that some of the people commenting here are assuming that because the kid is an accounting intern, is going somewhere and doing something with his life that he must be a white boy. Thats the only crazy thing about this whole page. Why is it hard for people to picture a young black man fitting this role? Maybe the change Bermuda needs and is looking for isn’t going to come from changing laws. Maybe we need to look at what we think we and others are capable of, and not some outdated stereotype.

As I read some of the comments here it is clear that many of us are very ignorant about about a lot of things but still feel comfortable about making statements based on something which they “heard”. When I was in college, one of my professors told the class that if alcohol were discovered today it would be an illegal drug. I am in my early 60′s and without exception, every one of my friends who have consumed alcohol on a daily basis for the past 30 years or more have serious medical issues – those that are still alive!

Maybe it’s co-incidence, but the ones I know that smoke a few times a week and drink only occassionally have no medical issues. If I were in charge I would make alcohol illegal and marijuana legal.

You’d be surprised at the Bermuda Government leaders over the past several years who while being on official Gov’t business overseas, have been an embarassment to Bermuda while getting “stupid drunk” from alcohol.)

Because it is legal does not mean it is OK (and vice versa). Remember slavery was once legal too!

All the money made off of it illegaly stays in the dark. If you treat it like Alcohol the money comes to light and the average citizen can legally capitalize.
But corporate interests (Liquor and tobacco)spend big money to keep the laws the way they are in order to not lose ground in the DRUG market because they are, infact, both drugs.

The court did the right thing. It is the draconian laws of Bermuda though that have already done the damage in years past. Use of Marijuana is prevalent in Bermuda, it is scientifically now proved that the previously fabricated ill effects of smoking it do not exist. Like pro-habitation of Alcohol in the United States, it’s illegality and harsh penalties continue to make it an expensive substance with huge profit potential. When un-regulated, anything that makes money will fall into the hands of organized crime and young men when convicted on minor drugs charges will be forced into a criminal society. It is the law that makes them criminals, not their action of smoking weed.

People kill people…n no weed dun kill people its d stuff guys put in it dat kills u..fiber glass to make it look like white crystals,sand to give it xtra weight..and its easier for d government to decriminilize then keep it ilegal or make it leagal…they can either give the job to ag n fish so all production in large quantities are regulated n controled by government or choose a designated area to open coffee shops n make people apply for liciences,if u sell 1 gram for 10 dollars government can take 2 dollars of every gram sold..allow coffee shops to only have 1000grams a time n when that runs out stock up again…it saves tax payers money,its not exposed to kids unda 18,and it can posibly solve dis resession problem.

Convict someone for something that is common in society and head them down a road where opportunity is limited to gain a law abiding and productive life. Convicting our young people with criminal records for a substance that does less damage than any other we abuse and we will continiue to have alienated young men who seek a life of crime. They have been pushed down that road by the law itself. It is so plain to see. If I get drunk and head down the road in my car and am caught, do I get put on a stop list? In reality I am more of a danger to society when I am drunk than a man who has yet to smoke a spliff in his pocket.

This is the loop hole that feeds the conspiracy it’s up to the judges discretion but due to the size of the fine it sounds like he was near a school or increased penalty zone as the fine is usually weight * perceived value or some such thing or he might have had a previous record. He should have fought it by the time it would go to court the .6 would have been dust………………
