I completely agree, they should ALL be put to work and embarrassed in front of the rest of the country!! They need somthing that will DETER them from commiting crimes…right now they have no fear of going to Westgate, in fact thats a place they can hang out with their friends while we the taxpayers pay for it!! They dont want to work out in the real world so they rob and steal, well put them behind bars and MAKE them work…being released should also require a prisoner having put in x amount of hours work….these fools are making this island unattractive so they should be put in charge of Keep Bermuda Beautiful….they want to be a part of a gang? show them the chain gang way and have them out on the beaches, parks, and railway trails in the heat picking up the trash!! We ALL know that the system we have right now is NOT working so why does it seem like NO ONE is redesigning the system???? There are soooo many creative ideas which could be used to revamp the prison system but no one is changing a thing and the island continues to go down the toilet!!

A gun amnesty should be implemented at all times. Its my belief that if someone comes across a firearm than they should have the right to turn in that weapon in amnesty. I look at it in the matter of parents finding guns. Do the police service think that they would hand that gun in knowing that their child would be implemented with possession of a concealed weapon. In reality only a very strong parent would do so. The goal is to get the gun off the street. I do believe the only way that the amnesty part should be overlooked is when they can prove that the firearm has been used in serious cases as murder or attempted murder. So now when a parent finds a gun they might hold on to it until another gun amnesty takes place or sell it just to get it out of their hands. Only a handful of people are going to hand it in knowing the reprucussion.

This is just one of the reasons why this situation has gotten out of hand. In the early 80′s when this was in it’s infancy, instead of nipping it in the bud, Bermuda say fit to blame outsiders, in particular “Jamaicans” in the 90′s as it increases, it was “BET” and “MTV” turn to take the blame. 2000′s it’s Video games turn to take the blame.

What Bermuda should be doing, is recognizing that the Kids are growing up in a vacuum and where there is a vacuum, it will be filled. These vices are the baby sitters of our children, so naturally they will have a great deal of influence on the ONES THAT ARE PRONE TO VIOLENCE.

THE SOONER WE LEARN TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS AND FILLED THE LIVES OF OUR KIDS WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES, and stop blaming outside influence, which by the way, is here to stay. You can expect more violence.

In case you don’t know, criminals have never turned their guns in a Gun Amnesty, and this has been the case here in the past and everywhere else in the world that Politicians dream up this dumb idea.

Bermudians are not ready for the draconian measures that is necessary to bring in the guns. But until we take the profit out of illegal drugs, provide proper education and opportunity for all!! then this is just the tip of the Iceberg.

I was talking to a friend the other who gave me something to think about. He suggested that the focus behind customs shifted about 10 years ago from having simple customs forms and tarriff numbers to a complex form that takes a long time to fill out and longer for customs to clear. The side effect was that the officers that were used to open and investigate containers and search for narcotics, guns etc.. were forced inside as pencil pushers, in almost civilian type roles. That left very few officers available to search and seize illegal goods. The focus seems to now be on collecting monies. I know there are some dedicated officers out there that are doing the best that they can…Im not disputing that. The point is that if 85% of the officers are behind a desk with calculators argueing with importers over the classification of the goods and what tariff number to use (which often has NO effect on the duty collected) then who is searching our containers? Years ago you could walk in to the long room…fill out a BCD yourself, pay your duty and be out of there with your cleared paperwork in 20 minutes. Now 1.5 days is the average because of the hundreds of tariff numbers now used and the amount of time used by an officer to go over the paperwork. Is any more duty collected???? Is anything constructive done with the extra data collected from all these tariff numbers…..ahhh NO! Lets go back to a simple form and free some of our customs officers up to search many more containers, visiting yachts, courier packages.

Muggings with guns are unfortunately big news in the tourist world. This kind of stuff could be the final nail in the coffin of Bermuda’s tourist hopes.
It’s time to get the guns off the streets. Government need to do a gun amnesty now.
