Everything you listed above is just an excuse that “back males” use to either explain why they can’t succeed or why they turned to a life of crime. “Black males” all over the world have it 10 times worse then ANY black male in Bermuda. I am willing to put money on that. If they just sucked it up and got a job, any job, and worked their way up, they would be fine. But Bermudians have this idea that they should automatically start at a high paying position, which is lazy. Hence the stereotype.

I didn’t have much growing up, when I wanted something, I had to go out and work for it.

I’d like to help them as well, as long as they want to help themselves. But I’m not the coddling type, I’m going to go the tough love path and tell it like it is. Problem is, young people will probably perceive this as disrespectful, but its not. Its the TRUTH, and sometimes we ALL have to face the TRUTH and deal with it.

Keep your heads up as well, I think what we all write is being read by those who really need to read it. Acting on it, is a totally different story. But we have to start somewhere.

It would seem you are going on through life and taking licks, well just continuing working hard, take your licks, and keep on trucking mate. Perhaps try and go back to school (I did at age 30) to get more skills to put you in a better position to earn more money, it can only help.

And here is just a thought, if you are old enough to KNOW that you weren’t raised in the best way and this may be the reason you act/talk/live the way you do. Then you are also old enough to KNOW that it wasn’t right, you can change how you act, and do what you NOW KNOW to be right. What happened during your upbringing isn’t (and never was) an excuse. You know whats right, 99% of know what is right. We just make choices to do otherwise, usually doing otherwise is just easier.

Keep your head up mate. If you need help/advice, ask away. I can help anyone who is already helping themselves.

I, for one NEVER said “all black males are up to no good”. If you actually read what I said you would see that I said “SOME”. “…. a self-fulfilling prophecy” is what you think I and most people think?! No mate, I actually see the potential in ALL (yes I said all) young black males, simply because we all came from very strong people who came before us. There is no blame to be placed anywhere else except on the man in the mirror. Everyone, especially young black males, is in charge of their own destiny. All it takes is honesty, hard work, self-discipline, and a plan. It isn’t easy, it isn’t pretty, and it isn’t the popular thing to do. But the rewards are what you want them to be AFTER you put in the work.

I have felt that way myself but my train of thought was “oh ya, you think that I’m so limited and ignorant, I will show you, I will show you all”. That was my catalyst/driving force, I then developed my own plan and NEVER looked back. Nothing special about me, if I can do it you younger guys (who are a lot smarted than I am) can surely do it.

I grew up and went to school in NYC in the 70s-80s. There were times after school where I had three choices: 1-Fight my way home through the mob of Italian boys shouting “n*gga” 2-Run away or 3-Do both. Usually for me it was both. We also were very poor in NYC, I KNOW the meaning of looking in a cupboard and there is nothing there. I also KNOW what sound a bullet makes as it goes by your head, on Rockaway Blvd. in Queens. Very few of our young black men today has ever experienced what I have, or perhaps they have. Either way, the choice to bury your head and just do stupid is NOT the way to go forward.

So forgive me if I don’t have a lot of coddling for SOME of our young black males as they try and give flimsy poor excuses as to why they can’t do what we all KNOW is already resident in them. There are bad choices SOME of our young black men are making and then they are spending most of the rest of their lives paying for the consequences. The choice (as they say) is ours, it always was!!

So as I tried to say earlier to young black males, as I once was, get your act together, stop your ignorance, find out what you want to do, go to school and get educated (creates options), develop a plan for YOURSELF, and then get to just DOING it! (Plan your work and then work your plan!) Once you start to help yourself you will find that more and more people will want to help and they won’t “look at you” the way you’ve been thinking they are looking at you.

Unlike you, I have my degree and a nice job. You seem like a spoiled brat and when you dont get your way you cry for other to help you.

Bermuda, in the grip of a drug-influenced crime wave, would benefit from heeding the advice of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, says MP Marc Bean.

Some things I read on here do make me queasy because they are so glaringly ignorant. But of course every once in a while I have to add my two cents

I grew up with both parents at home but it was disfunction i had many of days with out lights, didnt know what i was gonna eat, didn’t have any clothes on my back i had to dip water from a hole in the wall with a bucket and extension cord there where 5 of us and my dad would abuse my mom my sister(not sexually) he used to drink alot what we need to look at is how in the eighties the streets were flooded with drugs and alchohol mainly to the poor which caused disfunction in households I’ve seen crackheads with needles sticking out of there arms cuz they cant move (in Bermuda) it is real my mom had to end up working three jobs she couldn’t keep a eye on us because prices where skyrocketing at that time she had to work all a plan and design it’s hard to pull yourself back from sufferation. Some of us made it out and some just didn’t it’s so easy to say just do it but it’s a lot of factors surrounding the demise of our black men. My dad ended up dying becuase of drugs in the end thinking that this was the only way to make ends meet you wanna talk about black owned business there are some but there will be very few who make it to the top i was once a black business owner. every corner i turned was a checkpoint cuz the truth of the matter is it is about control. BUT IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE IT OUT. IT IS HARD THO UM SPEAKING FROM POVERTY IN BERMUDA

Yes some of these guys (black and white) use excuses as to why they are the way they are and everyone on the Island does…male and female, Black, White and Portuguese but it is up to the individual to change what they are going through and become better people.

I am a young black female and my parents did not have everything in life and nor did I and my children probably wont either but I try my best and that is all that should matter….my parents are very successful, I am successful and I wish success on my children. I say this to say that we need to get back to the days that my parent and grandparents used to talk about.

SMH that THE ISSUE always turns to a race argument but am thankful that there are strong black men out there that are not afraid to admit reality or call a spade a spade (hopefully the racists don’t read that wrong, it’s a saying). Everyone knows right from wrong whether you are white, black, pink, or purple; whether you are poor or rich; whether you have parents or not; whether you graduated from high school or not….. some just CHOOSE to use it as an excuse if they aren’t living the perfect life that actually does not exist!
