as an expat being invited by the employer to come here, i was sent an info magazine to increase my awareness of Bermuda…. i think BERMUDA is the name of the magazine 2010 edition…. and I can remember it claiming how Bermuda is enjoying a zero crime rate…. well and then… that was 2010…

well.. the shootings do not directly affect economy… but it is pointing to the current direction of this nation… which is nowhere but down…

at this point, pointing finger will not help…. still…. everything starts at home…. parents play a significant role in molding their children into a contributing citizen of the future…. holding more than one job may not be excused as i myself grew up with both my parents working overseas… however, even via phone call or internet communication, my parents were still able ti instill in me the value of education, respect for the others, and contentment, among so many others….. moreover, i don’t see my parents working hard so that they can parade themselves on nice signature clothings and jewelries…. they work hard in trying to cope up with university tuition and stuff…

mass media can be blamed as well as this is how our young minds were made aware of sex and violence…. still….. our inert tendency to explore cannot be helped… again.. parental guidance is a must… from time to time…. time spent together watching TV gives parents a chance to help their children discern what should be emulated and what should be not…. even that 15-min ride to school can be taken as an opportunity to dsicuss things with children….

Instead BDA Police manpower would be of better use by putting the squeeze on known gang members at all times. All police services should have a list of these gang members & any time one of these guys travels in, out or around Bermuda they should be pulled aside, searched. If found with anything giving reason for arrest they should be and then when found guilty charged with the ridiculous fines the tourists found with minute amounts of contraband are getting. The more unprofitable it becomes for someone to be in a gang the more undesirable it will be to be a gang member. Take away these guys big money rolls, Gold Chains & fancy cars and then they won’t look so cool to the young wannabe gangsters idolizing them.

You need to travel a bit (and not to US east coast inner cities) and wise up.

People cannot just stop driving/riding through that stretch of road.

Next you’ll want to make everyone use Rual Hill/Harbor Road and make the South Round-a-bout a walking path. Get real. These incidents are planned and when the opportunity presents itself, it occurs.

Opportunity, Means, ………

Sure tourist numbers were plummeting before the shootings became commonplace , we did that to them by charging them a ton of money to come here and then we spat on them with stinking attitudes. But don;t underestimate negative word of mouth when they come here and get exposed to all this stuff while they think they’re coming to some little paradise.

And in case you didn’t know it , most of those tourists that go to JA stay in gated compounds . My neighbors just got back from one. Large country (island) in most ways , much more beautiful than Bermy and they had a great time because they were isolated from the riff raff behaviour and felt safer than they do in their own home here. (does it matter if I say they’re IB execs too ? )

It maybe time to take some draconian measures for a while such as no pillion passengers, with maybe a few exceptions such as a child being a pillion passenger or husband and wife.

We may also need to modify the laws to allow police to ease drop on suspected gang members cell phone conversations.

I am a great believer in the use of technology and we may need to employ more technology, such as more surveillance systems, electronic vehicle tagginga and tracking systems.

The final solution maybe to deploy some drone technology and take out the gang terrorists.

And Although shootings happen worldwide there are still many countries that too much crime does not happpen. Sinapore, New Zeland, Norway, Japan, Iceland, Switzeland, Denmark, Cyprus, Luxemburg, to name a few.

In St. John, there is a huge amunt of petty theft, not violent crime. Same goes for CUBA, in Havana crime may be bad, but with a population of 11,000,000, they even do better than BERMUDA (at the moment). Ooh, and Castro don’t let NOBODY MESS WITH HIS TOURIST…….

Be careful what you ask for!

So continue to live in a world where you are satisfied with mediocrity, where you are satisfied with crime that matches or exceeds other not so great places, but allow me and others to express our dissatisfaction and sadness about where we have gotten ourselves, and where we are heading…

Keep the denial and mistaken comparisons up . We should not be likening ourselves to other places when we beg people to come here under the guise that we’re ‘another world’ and they’ll be safer than they are where they come from !
