Thanks for your comment, Kiskadee, although I think my colour had less to do with my non-promotion than my knack of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time to the wrong boss! I used to say what I wanted to say as opposed to what they wanted to hear, and it was very rarely that the two coincided, but I gave Bermuda 34 years in blue before I retired in 2000 and I have to say that, by and large, they were among the happiest years of my life. I’ve said for decades that Bermuda is a lovely wee island, and the vast majority of its people (whether black, white, or any shade in between) are among the finest people on this earth. OK, so during my 34 years in blue I had to deal with some of its not so nice residents, but I can’t complain too much about them as if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have had a job!

I lost my job last week and I can’t tell you how many pots I have broken! It is absolute mayhem at my house – broken pots galore, potting soil all over. If I see a pot, it’s getting smashed! My neighbors have all pulled their pots inside – AS THEY SHOULD! Until I get another job, pots are not safe in Bermuda! Pots, you have been warned!

i dont see this as someone that said “i have no job and cant feed my family, lemme go break some pots”

dont assume those who are unlucky with the recession are suddenly stupid. It was prob just some annoying kids/people doing this because they have low social morals.

Indeed. If the government was serious about reducing recidivism rates the would look to institute some hard rules that make the place less enjoyable. I cant believe they get fish and chips up there!?? Are these people for real!!?? Let me take over first thing Im doing is unplugging the water heaters, cold showers all around. I think we can all agree that they need some form of work detail even if it is only picking up trash off the streets. They say peanut butter is nutritional lets try that for breakfast lunch and dinner see how soon they want to return. At present the place is to comfortable and that’s why they don’t mind going back to hell with human or civil rights nothing I have suggested denies them any form of right.

Wondering, you’re so right in your assumption that I was one of those who “never made it past Sgt”: I served for a total of 36 years and never made it past PC! However, I don’t think that low rank should automatically disqualify anyone from having good ideas, although I do subscribe to the theory that the chances of any idea being accepted by the hierarchy of any establishment are directly proportional to the rank of the suggester thereof, and inversely proportional to the amount of common sense contained therein!

Ah yes, the age-old break pots when you don’t have a job tradition. Those are really the only two pass-times we have. We work or we break pots.

This was kids being dumb. Annoying yes. Something one can blame on the recession? come one. (well unless they’re potters and business is slow, then well spotted).

You can’t blame everything on “the recession’ and poor government choices.

I’m afraid that this is a direct result of some brain-dead politician’s bright idea to move the Police out of St George town to the boonies of Southside. To my mind, there were at least three other options which the Police should have been given to enable them to stay in St G: they were:-
1) Move the Post Office elsewhere, and let the Police take over that whole block.
2) Take over the old Youth Centre on Water Street East, with a nice high fence round a nice big yard where all the vehicles could be parked.
3) Take over the building on Ordnance Island now occupied by St G Corporation, thereby combining St G Police, Eastern Marine Section and HM Customs.
I think ANY of these options would at least have retained a Police presence in St G, and I did actually put all these options to Commissioner LeMay before he & I both retired at the end of last century (!), but he said then that he was “under the thumb of Government” and very much doubted if any of those three options would be accepted. And so it proved. Someone with more money than sense (which, let’s face it, isn’t difficult for a politician) decided to fly in the face of all logic and common sense and move the Police as far away from any likely crime areas as possible, with the inevitable result. And now they want to force the Police to take all accumulated annual leave or risk losing it? No bloody wonder the Thin Blue Line is so bloody thin these days!

PJ, I’m right with you on that, but I think the answer to at least part of the problem is simply to reopen Casemates. If people are prepared to resort to crime to get what they want, and thereby trample all over Joe Public’s human and civil rights in the process, I see absolutely no reason why they should then be able to claim that their own human and civil rights are being violated when they get slung into a REAL prison to repent upon their crimes. Westgate isn’t known as the West End Hilton for nothing: why do you think the repeat offender rate here is so high? I’ve always felt that prison should be a punishment for criminal behaviour, not a reward for it!

As someone who is from St. George’s, these guys do it because like someone said the police are all out at southside, so why not do it. The cops out southsie do two things (its a sweet gig if you think about it) they do a drive around the town and then drive around cut, and give out tickets on Kindley Field Road.

This is just a sign of the times; its Fallout from the recession exacerbated by the Governments poor fiscal management that has left them totally neutered in their ability to assist in keeping people employed through offering projects to the private sector therby encouraging employment.

I have already said as things worsen and more people become disillusioned from being unemployed unable to get food in their bellies or weave in their hair, gas for their over sized SUVs, an inability to travel three times a year or maintain the race to keep up with the Jonses we wil start to see a rise in all manner of crime coupled with an increasing number in need of an extended period of “wellness” treatment. The next capital projects we should see is an extension to Westgate and M.A.W.I respectively.
