I don’t defend the behavior of the drug dealer or murderer, but I do recognize that they did not arrive where they are out of the blue. There are myriad influences that go to form a character, and one poor choice can put you on a slippery slope. As an addiction counselor in a past life, I can tell you that most of my clients didn’t come to me for help willingly, they were sent, either by circumstances or by the courts. Change is challenging and when you don’t know for sure that your can live another life style, you don’t know how it will work, when no one you know is successfully living a different life style, it isn’t easy to decide to make that change. I’m sure you have heard that one has to hit rock bottom before going for help. That isn’t always true, but it is so most of the time.
Also it isn’t about spoon feeding them, or babying them, it is the recognition that when we don’t take care of those who are struggling, we ALL suffer. When will we get that message, I wonder. We can see that we are all suffering, but we still lay blame and put down people. “They” are us, our children, and we give up on them at our peril.

PS: If you think it is bad now, wait till we have gambling!!

We are influenced by not only our parents and friends but by the politicians, our friends’ parents, what we see on TV, the games we play, so many other influences, not to mention the norms of our society. IF the norm is to tell lies, or stretch the truth, or name-call,that is what we do. IF the norm is to criticize the police,the politicians, that is what we do. We as a nation need to do an honest, thoughtful moral inventory and take a good look at what we are demonstrating for the young in our society. They may not be your own, but they are still watching. The ‘village’ does indeed raise the child, despite all those who deny it.

it’s funny how everyone says that they don’t understand why the youth are doing what they’re doing or ridicule them because of the choices they’re making. If so many people know Mr. Muhammad did not commit the crimes he was convicted of, why keep silent? Why not call Crimestoppers and give up the real shooter? DNA is real hard to disprove. I still don’t think the ‘village’ failed Mr. Muhammad, a lot of people had a hard time coming up in BDA, so that’s not an excuse. Just because it cost a lot of money to lock up the convicted, they still need to be taken off the streets to protect the population. Or would it be better to say ‘we’ failed Mr. Muhammad and let him walk free? Maybe we all should have weapons and answer a knock on the front door with 5.5 full metal jackets.

Why do those who defend drug dealers, murderers and violent offenders always try to blame society for these young men’s actions? They want to tell society that they need to be knocking on these guys doors to try and help them but, ppl need to genuinely WANT help and usually ppl that want help are the ones who actually go out and seek it! Everyone knows where the nearest teacher, politician, church and pastor is! If they really wanted to change their lives them they themselves would be banging down the doors of these folks. Even an alcoholic has to first admit that he has a problem and reach out for help and HE has to go out and attend the AA classes. These are not babies, so why do u want us to wipe their nose, bath, clothe and spoon feed them? If they really want change then start by getting up off your butt and seeking out the closest available resource and go from there!

@ Truth is killin’ me whether or not you feel ‘he played the part” does not take away from the FACT that at one time or another in his life he was not ALWAYS like that. I don’t know what type of work that you do or what role you play in volunteering your services or any other role that you might play in Society, but the FACT remains that at some point and time there is a dsitinct shift in behavior and I see it on a daily at my place of employment as a Behavioral Therapist where I have been employed for 11 years. I have seen students that are ‘Off the chain” and when I read about them in the paper I can say, “oh well I expected that!” I have also seen students that if I read about them I am Like; “What the hell happened there?’ as they never ever presented problem while in school. So at what point is there a shif?…and these are students that are from both single and two parent households….And yes it is a shame that he never carried those same behaviors that I know that he was capable of out into the streets. I don’t know if you have any children but how many of us can give an accurate account of our children if we are not with them 24 hours per day? many of us would like to think that whatever values that they are taught at home they will carry with them out into society but sadly SOMETIMES this is not the case…..
