The law is the law, end of story. Marijuana is illegal, the reasons behind that fact are irrelevant. Until such time as Bermuda legislation is rewritten to include the decriminalization or legalization of marijuana offenders should expect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Secondly, it was never illegal to be a homosexual in Bermuda in the 1990's. However, up until recently the civil rights of homosexuals hasn't been protected by the law. My problem doesn't lie with spring breakers who want to smoke pot and let loose, but why should they be treated any differently to locals? If I'm arrested with a poke I will be agitated to be given a harsher sentence than a visiting college student on the premise that they are a visitor to the island. I retract my statement "the BPS has nothing to do with Customs". You are correct, the two departments do work together often.

Why don't you adjust your spectacles logic76. Who said anything about doing whatever they want? How does suggesting not to arrest a tourist for smoking a J translate to let them do whatever they want.

Hey Students! Welcome to Bermuda! Logic76 says: “while here you can drink all the booze you're 18+ hearts desire but don't D.A.R.E put that devil weed to your lips. Because if we catch you smoking that evil plant we will lock you up with the crack & heroin dealers & murderers. No complaints now, because there are no special breaks! Count your lucky stars if your gay that you didn't visit here in the early 90's when homosexuality was illegal by law.”

I figured since your trying to ad words to my post you wouldn't mind me doing the same.

Since you know so much about customs where do they take the prisoners when arrested? Is there a secret underground Guantánamo Bay type prison for foreigners in Bermuda? It couldn't be possible that they lock them up at the police station could it? Nah! Can't be why they have a police station at L.F. Wade because the BPS has NOTHING to do with customs. Right? They must also have a special court that the customs officers escort foreign prisoners to also. Right?

Since BPS has nothing to do with customs I guess there's no worries they'll search a tourist unless upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized in there presence. Besides if any of the BPS officers did do an illegal search of someone the officers would be arrested because, “You break the law and you WILL be punished.” Right?

GROW WISER MAN! & think about what you're typing!

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded." Abraham Lincoln

Students we are not all closed minded here I promise. Some of us still believe in the harry anslinger propaganda but many of our minds have grown & know better.

Hope all the students have a Bermudiful Spring Break!

$100 for an events pass?!?! I don't think so! To do what? Stand on the beach in gale force winds on Monday, spend $10 on a single drink at overpriced clubs? NOT A CHANCE! The DOT should have promoted cup match as a week long vacation package in Bermuda. Now all we'll have is a bunch of college kids take home stories of wind, rain, and cold seas! Have you seen the seaweed on Horseshoe Beach?!?!

On being a “white” reggae artist Collie has said:
Race hasn’t been an issue for me. The culture is very mixed in Bermuda and we’re closely linked to Jamaica in many ways. Reggae crowds can be very demanding, but if they like you, they will show you love like no one else. It’s that reaction that drives me, so with every record and every performance, I try to do something special.
Reggae has always been in my life, so I don’t want people to say that I’m good for a white guy. I want them to think the music I make is good, period.

No evidence of extortion of students just evidence of extortion of tourist which the students on spring break are. Evidence for this is here

http://www.cruiselawnews.com/2011/08/articles/drugs/busted-in-bermuda-customs-officials-extort-money-from-cruise-passengers-by-unconstitutional-drug-searches/

I guess one could say this is more the fault of Bermuda customs but the BPS do assist them so they are partially to blame. The misuse of drugs act states that you must be present during a search so what was done was illegal. Tourist that were issued these heavy fines should be recompensed & apologized to. I just hope there are no illegal searches of rooms during spring break beside students in all other spring break destinations are turned a blind eye to for smoking weed so BPS shouldn't be tightwads about it.

The only thing is the expat's friends have student passes & they do not. Hopefully the doormen at the parties have enough sense in there heads to allow the expats in with their friends.

Did they get permission from all those kids to use their likeness in the advertising?

Can it be considered false advertising when the students get here and it is cold, cloudy and raining and there is nowhere near any of that stuff going on yet? That is all clearly summer time activity.

Might be leaving with a sour taste...

The weather we have at the moment is what Canadians call patio weather & they'll bring out the bikinis if not to go in the water to at least get a tan. To bad sonesta closed down this would have been a perfect event for them. I don't know why other hotels haven't thought about building a greenhouse style indoor pool its perfectly logical in Bermuda. Then again hotels that charge $200 for a room that has close to the same amenities as a days inn have gone far from the realm of logic.

My niece arrived yesterday with a bunch of her Canadian college friends. I wish them & all other students a great visit.

Also to anyone in the BPS, please talk to your fellow officers & make it a point to keep these students safe & don't go around arresting them for petty stuff. You don't want to be notorious as the Mexican police are for extortion plus its a matter of time till you'll get sued for it.
