I personally feel that the government can’t do anything to change the affects of gang violence in Bda right now! The problem exist in the main factors that shape the lives of each child born in Bda or elsewhere, those factors are proven to be parents, teachers, and religion. Parents are the 1st example to a child of how they should behave and what is expected of them! Teachers have a vital role in who our children become as well as for most children from the age of 3mos old until about 17 yrs of age they spend 8hrs a day with their teachers! And religion because for those families that are religious, your religious beliefs & rituals shape your children’s lives as well! How you raise your children (morals & values) has a tremendous affect on who they will become! The only immediate response I feel would help to cease the current gang climate in Bda right now is Police presence!!! Why are these gang members able to get away with these shootings in Bda? Because there are never any police around!!! Where I live not more than 5 minutes goes by without seeing a police car patrolling the neighborhood! The government should think of ways to cut back on other duties that the police have ie. sitting in a patrol car with a radar gun & erect speed camera’s that can deal with that so that every 5 minutes a police car can patrol every single area that is considered a ‘gang area’ in Bda 24/7. But the Bda needs to realize that the majority of gang members of Bda today, their destiny to be a gang member or for them to be involved with negativity was created in their up bringing! In most cases parenting is the major factor! So we cannot stop them now, we can only try to catch them & look back at mistakes that were made in known gang members of today who were maybe brought to the attention of Child & Family Services as children in the 80′s and what intervention if any was made back then & use those cases as a guide to help the next generation of children who are now evolving! Maybe a social inquiry report can be done to assess the situation!

This book reminds me of the handbook they would send around to children aged 6- 12 years old on good friday. Reminding them the dangers of flying a kite too close to the power lines. ( And I am not trying to be funny about this.)
This is the only age group a booklet like this can benefit and maybe they can show it to their parents, other than that it really states nothing new.
And after all these deaths and murders, i was hoping for a significant reaction from perinchief and others ,and if this is their reaction then Bda is in a sad state affairs. I hope they actually have a plan for what is going on in some of these homes.
Why they are so scarred to be proactive is beyond me and many other people.
It is nothing a grown adult didnt already know. Adults need the police to make arrests before incidents happen that is the definition of being PROACTIVE.

Anyone can use the basic information that was in the book, yes..BUT it would have made even more sense to gear it towards Bermuda’s so called gang culture…it’s TOO GENERAL top and bottom line…More information could have been provided..

The book was copied from Nova Scotia, the Minister said this, so why reinvent the wheel if u can use this information. Gang signs are shown often here, just go out of night when they all show up at the same spot.

To tricks are for kids… i completley agree with you. I mean that was just ridiclous..anyone could of googled ‘gangs’ and got the informtion. I mean most people know that colors and signs go along with the gang community.. people of bermuda need to know facts about the gangs in BERMUDA, not a generalisation… come on now!!!

@Hmmmmm…It’s irrelivant wether he said he was going to use someone else’s research or not. The FACT is that he/The Minister produced this report and presented it as his own. He gave no refernce or acknowledement to the people that did the real work.

If you read the report (from the Halifax Police) you will note the refences and acknowlegements to the people that assisted. In fact the Halafax report is adapted from one done by the Edminton Police “Who are you childern hanging with?” (A recource guide on youth and gangs). There are also links to various websites which provide anti-gang related information and assistance.

you know years ago the previous govt used to use a law that outlawed anyone who was on the street and didnt have in their possession an i.d. nor money on them. they did this to clean up the streets of vagrants during election time. this not only boosted their arrest numbers but also made them look like they were doing something in the community…. here we are today with a minister that is clearly out of sorts who is trying his best to institute a law that outlaws gangs. This law will not only add to the already long list of laws that are targeted against one segment of the population “young Black Males”. i do admit there is a problem in Bermuda, but the problem calls for inventive solutions that will seem as a benefit and not a punishment to these young men and women who are actively involved in these sorts of behaviour. the minister presents a book that is absolutely rubbish. it is written by someone on the outside looking in. how about visiting the jails and asking the inmates why they were involved and print that. that way you can have a first hand view of the problem and this allows them to come up with tangible solutions. The current handbook as it stands only acts as a guide to stereotype individuals of the black persuasion. ..if you read the handbook it pretty much describes the young black culture of today.and allows the white class to stand on the side and root on the police when they have a young black male pulled to the side of the road with his pants down to his knees. recently the minister and the police reported a large cut in crimes do to their stop and search initiative, i have to inform you that you will have an increase in arrests and lower crime rate if you stop and search “everybody”. for anyone that thinks this is a good idea you obviously havent taken your blinders off yet…. all these young men will be let out one day and we all will have to deal with them again… i pray God has mercy on all of our souls if we do nothing to solve this issue now….

I know the names, areas they hang out, their colors, their finger signs, & symbols of the gangs here in Bermuda. I know this because I work with students that are intrigued by this lifestyle, who make the finger gestures, who wear the colors and draw the symbols on themselves or on their exercise books….I’m thinking that the booklet should have highlighted these areas instead of generalising what a gang is…That would have been more useful to parents…….

The book was COPIED from “GANG PREVENTION A Resourse Guide on Youth & Gangs” . Sorry if you are offended by others thoughts and feelings. There was nothing new that was presented in this book that people don’t know already. What are the gang signs as it realtes to Bermuda? what are the gang colors as it relates to bermuda? those are the type of things that should have been in the book. So its not a matter of being ungreatful or saying “f it” as you have so eloquently put it…The book is just “in general” and thats the point most are making.

You folks would form a committee against Jesus if you could. Perinchief said 2 weeks ago that he was using the Nova Scotia report. Just because you didn’t hear it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. This is where you haters always lose people. You have no idea how many parents need this information. This is a different world and things they think are innocent are actually warning signs. The guy’s trying to get them to pay attention. This stuff isn’t unique to Bermuda, its everywhere. I don’t care if he got the information from the moon….as a parent I need it and I want it so that my sons don’t get into this stuff and I know what to look for. Get a grip people and focus on the real issue here.

During a random conversation on the street, a young black man volunteered the following information which shocked me at the time, when he said, “There are three pillars supporting Bermuda: international business, tourism and drugs. The drug business supports more people in Bermuda than you think.” Wow. I didn’t think I was naive but I thought the “Three Pillars” in Bermuda were the Public (Govt) sector, the Private sector and charities.

Sure drugs and gangs are related but its not the guys in hoodies selling on the corner that’s behind it all. How far-reaching is the greed for money in our society? I wouldn’t be surprise to learn that men in suits with day jobs are involved at the top.

You don’t need a 16-paged booklet to point out what gangs are, and what parents can do when they see their child ‘slipping in the cracks’.

I’ll say it again- your child’s upbringing starts at HOME. Parents need to be AVALIABLE and APART of their childs life and not allow them to slip through.

Furthermore, with the way the economy is going and lack of jobs.. most of these thugs are helping with alot of the bills and other payments with all the money they make. Which parent you know is saying no to their ‘son’ aka ‘gang member’ who is willing and able to pay for the bills?!…… Oh, that’s what I thought.

The minister needs to take a break from playing GTA. This guide is fully Americanized & hardly has anything to do with gangs in Bermuda. Kids please pack your hoodies & baseball caps away because after parents read this manual you’ll all be considered gang members.
