Well put @ Wise One……. This is what we get when we have a typical top-down approach to politics. The OBA know no other way. New candidates MUST read from the script handed to them. thats one of the key differences between the two parties, the PLP, inspite of its shortcomings, is grassroots/bottom-up, while the OBA, are clearly TOP-down. i remember when the OBA was “formed”, and having looked at their constitution, there is NOTHING that seperates them from the UBP.

@ Questioning Everything: Great questions! and some very pertinent points. Some of the answers are obvious if you look dispassionately at where we are – not demonizing or bashing anyone, just going on the reality of the situation. Some of the people who blog here have their own spin – and that’s folks from all sides. However, there are some things, like the abysmal state of our economy, the real estate situation, and our public education system that allow you to judge for yourself.

As an older adult, I post to this site because I enjoy the discourse, I can ignore or shake my head or choose to respond when someone posts something I consider outrageous, or I can add my voice when I think someone is making sense. I find this medium to be mentally stimulating, although sometimes I despair because what seems so clear to me, some others appear to be blind to.

I pray unceasingly for this country and its people. I wish we all would live in our highest. I wish those at the top would set a better example. I hope the young ones will jump in and make a difference. I’ve gotten a little tired.

Tried to stay out, but have to put in my two cents, LaVerne.
1) I called for Dr. Brown to be impeached, but I never wanted Ms. Cox as premier because, as Finance Minister, she was the one person who had the power to stop the excesses. Not only did she not stop him, she abdicated all responsibility with her “cog in the wheel” remark.
2) “most wealthiest”?? and you a journalist? It is either ‘wealthiest’ or ‘most wealthy.’

One thing about Bermudians, they love a good talker… But talk is just talk. How many people does it take to mend a leaking roof? Cause all I see is the OBA/UBP just holding buckets and pans under a leaking roof… And if the OBA/UBP are going to fix it, what do they intend on fixing it with? They still haven’t spoke of any materials in which they will use in mending a permanent let alone temporary fix.

It’s not a myth, at least one of the wealthiest, unless you want to get technical. Why be ashamed of it. I admire the Gibbons family. They are a great example of working very hard and what can be achieved – through multiple generations. And counter to what people generally think, their success does not go back hundreds of years, maybe just 70 or so. They are an upstanding family, no matter what some might say.

Really, Laverne, I’m surprised you fell for that myth about the Gibbons family being “the most wealthiest family” in Bermuda. But, of course, you’re just perpetuating it for your own transparent political reasons. But to allege that they’re involved in corruption, cronyism and cover-ups? Haven’t you been knocking yourself out in this thread about proving “allegations”? So where’s the proof? Where’s the evidence? (Hint: you’ll never find it because there isn’t any.)

However it’s a proven fact that she is a liar and has no problem with shirking integrity (which maybe useful for some on here to look up the word as lying is not included in the definition) and really has no credibility wither she posts with her real name or not. In fact seeing some new names here in support for the PLP means nothing to me as chances are they are the same people using different names as I have proved in the past with an other poster who posts for the PLP and that is a FACT.

You haven’t got much a choice then do you? Vote for the PLP or not at all. I find it absurd in the notion that if the OBA get in they will be exactly like the so called “nasty” UBP were. Are you that naive to believe that? The OBA is not burdened by the past nearly as much as the PLP are. They are starting afresh and welcome to new ideas. If you are happy with how the PLP have handled things vote for them, but most people I speak to of all types are not happy and it is going to play out very interestingly at the election. The swing needed is only 5 %. The Paula Cox knows that does not equate to a lot of people and are hesitant to call the election because of a lack of confidence in winning.

Thanks, I see the employee of Gibbons Company is OBA newest youngest candidate Ms Swan….well be careful OBA for calling the PLP cronyism. Does the Gibbons promise something to Ms. Swan? As I recall that term was more applicable to the UBP, and most of those folks are the OBA. I recall changing my vote because I was able to see that “Cronyism” was well practice within the UBP. So now I must think carefully were to put my vote now…….Cronyism has just shifted to the OBA?

Just a couple of questions:

1) Does “Old Bermuda” mean white and light? Or does that mean when Blacks worked together to build better futures? Or when teachers actually cared? Or when we actually had money to run the country? Or when people cared enough about their families, neighbors and communities to play an active an positive role?

2) Are adults arguing for the sake of wanting to say something on this site?

3) Is everbody being adversely affected by this Government, and if so would an entire change in Government bring about the reform that the people are calling for? Is there a room for a collaborative effort on both sides for the betterment of Bermuda?

4) Is not having the absolute best person for the job, in the job a sign of good governance? Can we honestly say that this Government has practiced this over the last 13 years?

5) Are the people demonising Paula Cox, or have the results or lack thereof of her leadership called her abilities into question?

6)What has has the OBA really said about it’s plans going forward? Will Craig be an effective and efficient leader?

7) Will this election be based on FACTS or DREAMS for the future?

8) How much debt will the current under 30′s have to be discussing about paying back because of this Government? How much will taxes rise in the near future? Can I afford to have kids and a life in Bermuda?

9) Will Bermuda College ever be an affordable 4-year institution so that our kids can be educated to University level at home, for a reduced rate?

10) Will the cost of living be addressed? Will controls be put into place for electricty, food, gas etc?

11) Will there ever be a discussion about the “War on Drug Mules”? Because that’s who are in the prison system.

12) Will the MOED finally take some advice from the private system about curriculum and implementation? Their results are landslides better so why not use the resources at hand?

Just a few things that are running through this 29 year old head. I need answers before I can even think about where my vote will go.

Afterall, when you have a bloc vote that they have been used too, and dont have to go amongst the people, it leaves them in this position. Dont blame the PLP, look in the mirror and ask yourself why?

And how democratic was it for Col. Burch to be selected for the constituency he was voted in for by the Central Committee after failing to receive the nomination in his original constituency?

The Opposition simply does not have the established political mechanisms as the PLP does at this point in time.

I hope that the non cyber bullies here realize that the barrage of anti govt hared that is spewed here all day every day is not organic, it is a mostly conscious effort by the same mostly ex pat angry hateful group who post on bermudaisanotherworld. They have an agreement with each other to troll bermuda’s blogs and post as many hateful things as they can. Many of them don’t live here and cant vote and have a problem with this govt. mostly based on old racist ideals. It is why they can easily shift their anger from jennifer smith, to alex scot, to brown to cox. no matter who or how well the govt. is doing they will attack. for every one pro govt. post, you will see 10 angry responses. It is very coordinated and destructive. One common retort that speaks volumes is that “bda has been horrible since 1998″ meaning that even before the PLP had a chance to put any policies into place they were seething, you see it has nothing to do with governance. If you remember, going back to jennifer there have been accusations of corruption but nothing proven legally. When it comes to financial and govt.corruption even someone as powerful as the US president will be found out (see clinton, nixon) the reason why nothing is ever proven here is that there is nothing. Political power cannot be won by old bermuda anymore so they will cry corruption and smear, that is all they can do. It is something that actually predates party politics. Remember how cathartic it was when the UBP was voted out, if the OBA gets voted in it will be the UBP all over again.

AS an example, the candidate selection process for both party’s speaks to their approach. The PLP’s process in some instances became chaotic (Burt vs Butterfield), but thats what happens when you take a grassroots, democratic approach. On the other hand, the OBA’s approach can only be understood by those in the room making the decisions (5-10 people). No transparency, no public(or even OBA members involvement in the selection process). Thats why many thinking persons, especially swing voters, cannot warm-up to the OBA. They dont practice what they preach. We will vote for the PLP, despite their multiple mistakes, as we cannot trust people who are still practicing ‘political sorcery”. Plus, their leader has not spoken in the House since he was elected. why the silance? it leads me to believe what what many suspect, that Craig is mearly a tool too be used to garner the “black swing vote”, and will then be discarded when his handlers have no more use for him. its a shame, because the next generation in particular, deserve better.

Thanks “Be For Real”. I’m in good company. Look at how the OBA/UBP anonymous cyber bullies attack and demonise Premier Cox. These are probably the same people who called for Dr. Brown to step down so that the then Finance Minister Cox, could take over the helm of government. Not they’re crucifying her.

As you notice, I’ve not personally attacked Ms. Scott. All I asked was where she is working. Most people include that information when running for public office. Last week when the OBA/UBP announced Alexis Swan they said that she worked at Colonial Insurance Company, a company owned by Bermuda’s most wealthiest family, the Gibbons family.

Now if we want to talk about corruption, cronyism and cover-ups…..

Overall one of the stronger new candidates announced by the OBA. I hope the fact that she is not a born Bermudian will not be used against her. I know historically it has been seen as a negative as far as being in Parliament here. One example is of Kim Young, who had to endure rude and condescending remarks from the other side. I wish Leah Scott well.

A Laverne – I think what is most telling on this subject has been Paula Cox’s actions since she took office as Premier. She has had to spend an enormous amount of time and energy working on her Good Governance initiative. That to me tells me that there was plenty of wrong doing taking place, specifically under Ewart Brown’s tenure. She continues to go to great lengths to try to reassure everyone that things are very different now than before. As we know, there was no love lost between her and Ewart Brown and she made that very clear. She despised his ways and now is making every effort to make amends for the damage he has done.
