You must be a young guy who’s been around a lot of trash talk – here’s a little history for you.

Bermuda has had several “Black” owned newspapers through the years. The Bermuda Recorder edited by Mr. Ira Philips and The Bermuda Times owned by Dr. Ewart Brown and edited by Ms. Laverne Furbert immediately come to mind. The recorder was a well thought of weekly and I am not sure why it eventually folded. I gather the Times folded due to financial issues, not an entirely unexpected outcome as its slant was a somewhat off the wall without much hard news. Regardless, today newspapers are folding right left and center – they are very much yesterday’s medium. On the other hand, e-ventures such as Bernews are likely the future. I do know that Bernews was founded by a black journalist but I do not know who presently owns as apparently that information cannot be found in the public domain – there were rumours late last year that Dr. Brown himself had invested in it but I do not know how true that is.

With regard to the banks, historically for most of the 20th Century, the two main banks were publicly traded, i.e anybody could buy shares in them. As a legacy, there were probably more white shareholders than black but I think if a study were to be done, this legacy has proabably been evening itself out. Mind you, BNTB shares are about the last thing anybody would want to be stuck with. There was a black bank in Bermuda in the early 1970s; it was founded by Bermuda Provident Investments Ltd (a licensed deposit company), a group of black investors who brought in Barclays as their partner. Bermuda Provident Investments was wound up when it was discovered that directors had run off with all the cookies in the cookie jar iu.e the depositors funds; the only thing of any value were the Bank Shares which were sold on – that bank today is Bermuda Commercial Bank. Interestingly, the black depositors in Bermuda Provident Investments were paid back the value of their investments by the UBP government while the mostly white investors in Rego and Walter L Frith deposit companies were not when those firms collapsed.

As regards TV stations, ZFB was founded by the same Mr. Ira Philips as mentioned above. It was an independent station for several years until financial considerations forced it to merge with the (then) publicly trade Bermuda Broadcasting Company.

when obama wins the election this year, 50%of us voters will happy with it, 50 will be angry, 20 % will be livid.

no matter what barack or the democrats do there will be people who will never vote for them they see the democrats as anti business and clueless on the economy and believers in tax and spend policies which just increases future debt

in bermuda there are about 25 – 30 % of the voters who will never vote plp for racial reasons that they hide beneath the guise of financial rhetoric

for the anti plp faction who are stuck in the past and want desperately to see the plp fail bcuz it will prove some racists sentiment that blks cant run a modern economy – they’ve said it from the beginning

there’s a reason why the call the PLP an experiment that failed, they never say the UBP was an experiment and we know that failed – experiment is code word for deep held racism

if they dont want to come along, leave them, they will only hold progress back, plp need plp voters to vote for them. end of story.

It’s just that on Friday in the Budget speech, Paula Cox said that debt is ‘neither good nor bad’. She said it’s not a problem to keep borrowing and borrowing and getting more and more into debt.

Are you suggesting she might have been misleading us?

A lot of time, money, and luxury overseas trips were invested in this in the past year to two and I think they owe us an explanation of how successful that endeavor has been.

In September last year they said “a lot of jobs could be created” in the business if they pursued it. They also said it would become “another major economic pillar for the economy”.

Were they just saying that to justify the expense of first-class travel vacations to shuttle launches and the Paris Satellite Conference, or is it actually turning into a viable business?

It was not mentioned in the Budget at all. My suspicion is that it has fizzled out, like most of the crackpot idiot PLP schemes. But let’s hear about it. Prove me wrong.

What does it matter the size of the United Kingdom’s economy?

the UK are the 6th or 7th economy in the world according to the different rankings… they can borrow as much as they want…

Before preparing the Budget and her speech, I wish the Premier had listened to this clip with the former Prime Minister of Britain, explaining the concept that is lost on my Government, that there is no such thing as the public purse as it is provided by the Bermuda Taxpayers and that it is incumbent on the Government to spend it wisely. To quote Gregory Leigh, “Tax should be viewed as a form of capital injection provided by the taxpayers in the hope that the Executive will add value and increase tangible and non-tangible assets that we can all share — not an infinite stream of income to be spent for little or no lasting benefit.”
