It is not illegal to have a franchise in Bermuda. The anti-franchise law only apply to restaurant. It is not about having friends in high places. The food franchise laws were (in theory) brought in so as not to saturate the Bermuda market with American style restaurants only. PLP aren't the only ones being protected by that law... you only have to look at who owns the major restaurants in Bermuda.... get it right!

It appears that the franchise laws only apply to restaurants because I fail to see how this is not considered one. The fact that each Sears store is privately owned (as someone pointed out) has nothing to do with it because so are the individual McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King's,Domino's,etc.-each is independently owned by a franchisee but they still answer to the parent company. Same would apply with this Sears branch-there would be rules Market Place would have to follow as far as allowed colours, logos, etc. They can't just do as they want and answer to the head office-IT IS A FRANCHISE!

This country is so backwards,I swear. Look around and we have plenty of franchises here-Louis Vuitton, Mango, FCUK, Banana Republic, Marks & Spencer, The Levi Store, Mac, Body Shop (before they closed)...it goes on and on and seems to be fine...but try and open a Mickey D's and it's like the world has come to and end-it's unreasonable and a double standard!!!

From what i understand Sears is not a franchise but stores are privately owned. What i want to know is if there were really 8 jobs created because i see market place staff in those photos, so unless their former positions have been filled with new people, no jobs were created just transferred.
