Why on earth would the Miss World organisers only give just over a week’s notice? Didn’t the local organiser know from this time last year when and where the Miss World Pageant would be held so proper arrangements could be made, and the Miss Bermuda Pageant held several months ago to give time to prepare? Last year it was Jana dressed in rags to raise money, now this year something similar.
If the proper organisation is lacking, drop Miss World and stick with Miss Bermuda, which by itself will allow the winner to promote herself as a role model and community beneficiary in Bermuda.

The moment this Govt would have given Miss Minors money, you would be complaining that it is a waste of money. Now that this beautiful young lady is doing well she should get Govt funding.

I wish Miss Minors all the best and will make my contribution by supporting her fundraising efforts.

How ever noble the desires of those attempting to raise funds, the Minors are more than able to finance their way over to support their daughter. I am proud of the fact that she has made it thus far and that she is representing Bermuda in this light, I wish her the best.

@mmHMMM Slightly bitter and crew. The organizers are to be commended for resurrecting this contest and having Bermuda represented on the world stage. Yes, there are pressing matters and some people might not think this contest is very important but imagine the exposure we will get if she wins. People just have to put a negative spin on things. I don’t know her parents personally, but I have seen this family around for years and they are good people. I agree with the person who suggested posting an account number earlier. I have bills to pay just like “bitter” but I will gladly make a donation even if its only $20…

Slightly bitter…this is something that shows our young people do care about others…being in China is not a luxury….she is representing our island…and lets face it we need all the help in the world right now to promote this little paradise . If it stimulates people to google Bermuda then hopefully we can increase tourists to our shores…China is a booming economy…ummm…the Chinese travel far and wide and have the finances to boost economies… all the best to the friends..I know you have also been instrumental in other worthy causes on this island and are all shakers and movers instead of sitting back …..beats sitting on a wall..

I would like to see the funds from the bake sale help one of Rochelle’s great friends go with the family to China.
Do you know the father owns a company and the mother and sisters occupations? I can also understand slightly bitters feelings.

This is a luxury and we need to be raising money towards our students going to school and furthering themselves, and assisting those jobless and pennyless in this economy. You’re asking for my pocket money, so that a luxury vacation to China can be had. We can all watch from our television sets and support Miss Bermuda.

This is not to say when someone is a positive role model they shouldn’t be encouraged along, but in these economic times we nee to be thoughtful of who needs money and assistance most!

No offense but there are much more pressing issues in our lives than to be giving money towards a luxury, once in a lifetime trip for ‘Support’to CHINA.

Maybe I should have a fundraiser to assist with costs for my parents to fly out to me to support me as well. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

That’s fine and dandy @WhiteElephant but again, I simply said that making negative comments/underestimating a bake sale isn’t the way to go. A bake sale may not make millions but I’m sure her family will appreciate whatever comes out of it. I will be there to donate, regardless of the bake sale but to support our Miss Bermuda!
In no way was I “shooting the messenger”.

@Longtail….I am only asking a legitimate question and wanted a legitimate answer..but instead I get aggravation from types like you.

I think that it is admirable for her friends to have a bake sale, but when you do the math, it just doesn’t add up.

I just wanted some clarity with regards to the finances for the pageant and how they are spent.

Who knows, I may know of persons who are interested in giving a VERY large donation to your bake sale.

One has to ask questions first before blindly handing over their funds!

So don’t shoot the messenger!

Wow….way to rain on someone’s parade. @EmptyPockets maybe you should go down and support Miss Minors’ friends being as you have all the answers!? This is a huge problem in Bermuda – paying attention to everything and everyone else BUT your own. A bake sale is a small but effective way to raise money and I believe I also read that people are welcomed to make donations on top of what they purchase, so anything is possible. Every little helps!

She isn’t allowed a chaperone as she is secluded along with the rest of the contestants of The Miss World pageant so a chaperone isn’t really needed while she takes part in the preliminary activities. Finances will always be an issue with an event such as this and The Miss Bermuda Pageant COmmittee isn’t as big as you may think it is….THIS is why her friends are putting on an event. Simply to raise money. Things are easier said than done

@112..but do you really think that a bake sale and other donations will raise $9,000.00 for three family members to attend if the airplane tickets cost $3,000.00 a piece along with additional expenses that include hotel, transportation and tickets to the Miss World event?

I’m not sure that I understand the role of the Pageant organizers with regards as to how the finances are spent on the entire event. It would be interesting to know what happens in other jurisdictions when they have a contestant who enters the international pageants.

I understand everyone’s point above. All valid as they may seem I would like to add that in my opinion, the friends and family that organized this and recognize that a need to help the parents and sibling of Rochelle financially in order to attend is very commenable.

This is a first class example of the community pitching in to take care of one another. Government yes has roles to play in supporting its countrymen from time to time but we as countrymen can do just the same and at times faster and more efficiently such as friends of the Minors family pulling together this bake sale to do something humble. After all we are talking about travelling around the world on a dime, many people cant prepare for that in a short period of time.

I will be there to support! Bet that!

Thanks KTB..so does someone from the Pageant organization committee accompany Miss Bermuda as a chaperone and do they have to pay for their expenses out of their own pocket?

If finances are an issue, then perhaps more sponsors are needed and there should be more persons on the committee that can provide funds to cover additional travel expenses, i.e. for at least one family member to attend.

The Miss Bermuda Pageant have covered all of Rochelle’s expenses and she is now in the hands of The Miss World Organisation.

Her friends are raising money to support her parents, as they had expressed interests in going to China, but as students, can’t. Her friends have a good relationship with Miss Minors’ family. SUPPORT. That’s all it is. Stop making this a political issue people!

Come on Bermuda, Ms. Rochelle is our Island’s Miss. Bermuda, representing all of us internationally. If we can swiftly raise funds for many other needy causes (Haiti, unemployed, seniors, animals, save open space, education, single mothers, charities, etc…) I’m sure we can support our Miss. Bermuda!

Let’s keep focus on unity Bermuda, enough is enough, this is a positive opportunity for Bermuda, and we must learn to support one another and uplift each other with our words and actions for the betterment of our community.

I’ll be happy to enlighten you…..
It’s the Miss Bermuda Pageant organizers responsibilty to make sure the reigning queen makes it to Miss World. That includes purchasing plane tickets (which is around 3 grand), dealing with the Chinese immigration for a visa which is a NIGHTMARE,baggage fees, etc. All of which had to be done in the very short time frame of just over a week.
So I would think it’s kind of unreasonable to expect the pageant organizers to coordinate and pay for an additional person considering the immense cost. I could kinda see your point if the Miss World finals was in the United States maybe….but we’re talking Mongolia here.

Paula Cox can’t give this young ladies parents the money to fly out to China to see their daughter in the contest. This is Bermuda’s Miss Bermuda let her win Miss World the first thing you will see at the air port is the PLP crew.
