With BTC I don't have that problem where I live. I pay for 8MB and get between 6 - 7 at all times. To achieve that I admit I did need to put some pressure on BTC and I have to say they did step up and came up with a workable solution. I suggest anyone who is not satisfied with their speed to contact BTC and take it right to the top if necessary. I use Transact as my ISP. I can't speak for the other ISPs. CV from various reports have apparently improved their speeds during peak hours over the last few month. Not perfect but an improvement. Having tested both BTC and CV for a month together last year for me BTC won easily in terms of consistency of speed.

Not with those damn prices. Must be crazy. What exactly are we paying more for?

A more likely scenario is BTC having a much closer relationship with CV of which Keytech, BTC's parent company owns around 30%. It would give BTC an already updated backbone to get into residential households and then only have to lay the fiber from the CV fiber nodes that are already scattered though out the island. It baffles me why they have up until now not attempted to work together. Now they might be forced to do it for survival. That's if Link Bermuda really comes though with their proposal, which at this point is just blowing smoke to get the Government to actually push through with the reforms.

I have a hard time believing that in 6 months 40% of the island will have access to 25MB internet service. When I mentioned the 10MB speed, which is the so called current maximum, to the BTC techs they just laughed. Nobody can actually achieve that speed. The problem BTC and CV create for themselves is a failure to meet expectations. Why call it up to 10MB when the reality is 8MB or less? The customer always feels let down, especially at the price we pay.

Obviously the BTC Press Release was sent out knowing that Link Bermuda was about to make their big plans known. It's interesting that 6 years ago Cable & Wireless, now Link Bermuda, made a bid for BTC of around $50 mil and BTC rejected it as too low. I bet they are kicking themselves now. Link Bermuda must feel they have no need for the BTC's infrastrucure and can just do it all themselves. If it actually happens it will be a game changer and I see the other local companies struggling to compete. Check out what Link Bermuda's Canadian counterpart East Link is doing in Canada right now. They are offering TV, Internet and Phone as a bundle over fiber. In other words they have the experience of doing it themselves already. Interesting times ahead. Finally the industry will be allowed to move ahead without the outdated restrictions put in place back when the internet was invented! Dept of Telecommunication under the PLP should be ashamed of themselves for not responding to the needs of the Public and the Industry in a timely manner. There is no excuse.

To all those waiting with bated breath to have Bermuda go 'supersonic' with our bandwidth speeds - you need to ask yourself one question is this a cheap marketing ploy to get you to spend disproportinatley more or are you genuinely going to be able to tell the difference between say 7MB and 25MB as far as what you do on the interenet on a daily basis??

If you're not going to be downloading/uploading gigs of data on a daily basis then you're not going to reaslie the difference!

What I do agree with is the need for the regulators to ensure that customers are receiving what they are paying for as far as quality of service - Cablevision/BTC are both guilty of neglect when it comes to this!
