Personally, I don’t see that the comments, when posted in full, by Cedar Beams (Original) are taken as a stereotype. I can’t tell from the comment whether the blogger is black, white, pink, blue or ? All the comment says is that instead of wasting money Cedar Beams (Original) paid down a mortgage. That type of discipline transcends race, class and everything else, unless in this case somoene wanted to take part of it out of context, rather like the infamous e mail used by Wayne Furbert, for racial and political reasons. Has The Prime Minister unintentially descended to the stereotype that a black person can’t be responsible?

At the risk of opening up another big kettle of worms, I had hopes when I read the original headline (perhaps it was in RG) that this man spoke about the need for human rights, that he was also speaking about the other neglected, unprotected humans – the aged and the LBGT community. Knew it was too good to be true.

Wish as well, he had spoken to the racists within the ranks of the Unions and the ruling party who have no qualms about making derogatory remarks toward those not of African descent…anonymously.

I resist the use of this word, but the arrogance of my fellow Bermudians when it comes to people from the Diaspora is just shocking. Baldwin Spencer is a Caribbean giant and a man who is recognized in the Region as a statesmanlike voice. But because he dares to tackle some home truths for Bermuda all of you, black and white, denounce him in your posts. Spencer’s record will reflect that he was always wary of Stanford and in fact spoke out against some of the things he was trying to do in Antigua.

The interesting thing is that this behaviour on the part of Bermudians is nothing new. In spite of our close connection to the Caribbean, we have been conditioned to look down on our southern cousins.Consider all the derogatory names we’ve called them in spite of the fact that we’re hardly a generation removed from those relations.

Meanwhile, we have no issue exploiting the Region for our own purposes.Many local businesses have subsidiaries in the Caribbean and we have strong ties to many islands through the dollar. Socially, we enjoy the forbidden delights of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic for some obvious reasons. Yet, when someone of stature dares enlighten us we resist; not only the message but we denigrate the messenger, just based on his origin.

Until this country and some of you folks in particular resolve why Baldwin Spencer must be rejected but Kevin Comeau, Peter Everson and others like them must be accepted, then we will never progress beyond the immature discussion on race, well characterized by this embarrassing set of comments. I for one, hope the distinguished Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda doesn’t read them anymore until we grow up.

Perhaps Spencer’s real mission was to try and sell us his country – what with a little Bermudian know how and get go, should be a real breeze turning the place around. We could start by gifting them a prison and sending down all our violent criminals – we would be happy to pay as it would be a lot cheaper than keeping them here. Win/Win.

The message is more important than the messenger….Bermuda is not and never will be Carribean….Having relatives from another part of the world does not make you what they are…By the way, all Politicians and some civil servants are protected under the “Oath”they swear to and can never truly speak their minds only in certain circumstances,(House of Assembly, motion to adjoun) so we must look at who really is cloak and dagger..?Can you imagine what is really said behind closed doors with all Unions and Parties??must be interesting….Again thank Goodness we have Bernews so that there are more opinions to choose from or view… We don’t need people stalking others based on what they write on a blog or newspaper, this has happened before in Bermuda so the right to privacy is for good reason..Thanks Bermynews!!

I remember when the Byrds ran Antigua….they won, the people lost. Antigua had a 3rd world hospital, horrible roadways, and what little foreign investment and on going capital projects they had, the money didn’t trickle down very well. Yet the ruling politican’s lived very well, spouting their rhetoric to the gullible masses that couldn’t see ‘the forest through the trees’….rebels without a cause, fighting a war that ended in 1998…..so goes Labor Day ;-(
