The sad truth for many folks is that neither party presents a strong enough case for leading this little island through the next 5 years of what will clearly be rough seas. In the first few years of the PLP's reign it appeared that the then Leader and Minister of Finance had made a pact to reduce the national debt, cater to the business community and show the naysayers that they could be every bit as UBP and the UBP, and they did just that. Unfortunately, very little was done to cater to the party base who sought real social change; affordable (rents), assistance for seniors, programs that sought to move the young black male back into the mainstream and other much needed social programs. The internal fight amongst the old guard and those seeking change resulted in a new Leader and Minsiter of Finance, the latter sharing the same name and genes of the previous Minister of Finance, if nothing else.
Well we all know the outcome of that period of darkness and we are now faced with over a Billion dollars of debt. And yes the global economy played its part but right thinking people on either side of our political divide accept that a large portion of our current debt was self induced. Simply put, it just didn't have to be this bad.
Fast forward to election 2012 and what the PLP are faced with is an electorate full of tired people; tired of broken promises, tired of living in constant fear of losing their jobs as more and more companies are either leaving or downsizing, tired of being afraid that they will lose their houses, cars, and all of the other stuff that one accumulates. They are tired of being lied to, time and time again and having it brushed aside by politicians using the race card.
The challenge for the OBA is trying to shed the label of being UBP lite.
The hard truth is that the PLP have made so many mistakes when dealing with the international business community that they now have to cave and give away the house and that just doesn't sit well with loads of folks. They are challenged by the very real fact that they have to cut the civil service workforce which they bloated to unsustainable levels and they won't or can't articulate that in an election year.
The sad truth is that the PLP have run out of ideas and the OBA are afraid to articulate what has to happen in order to corect this unbalance. They can't or won't say that they have to cut the civil service work force; they can't or won't say that they have to raise taxes (on something) in order to generate much needed revenues.
So for me--I just can't hear the BS from both sides any longer. Will some group step forward and offer real solutions--PLEASE!

“In 1998, people power threw off the yoke of 30+ years of rule by those who looked after the lucky few. Today, we are calling on that people power to once again stand strong with the party that stands strong for Bermudians. We hope to see you there tonight. You’re not going to want to miss it.”

Always something negative always on some kind of war path... You are all a bunch of bitter, sad and depressed people. Get over the past move on and do whatever you think you can do to improve things and make it better. STOP trying to get votes based on hatred and pains of the past...

This would be a good opportunity to question them about their plans to turn Astwood Park into a scrambling track.

I'll bet you hear a lot of, 'under discussion', 'nothing finalized', and a lot of mumbling umm umms as the heavy machinery sits in the park ready to dig up the grass and trees.
