Perhaps people should just stop assuming because contrary to popular believe not all young black males are gang members. Better choices like what riding and siting off in a neighborhood?? It’s sad that Bermuda has come to the point where you if you venture out of your own neighborhood you’re automatically a target. I’m the biggest advocate for a violence free Bermuda an trust me when it really hits home and happens to someone you love and care for these comments will irritate you as much as they do me. People on blogs hide behind computers and piece together the lives of people whom they’ve only read about in a 4 paragraph story. Last I checked there wasn’t a law against sitting on a bike in a neighborhood that wasn’t your own. Bermuda we as a people really need to do better.

Do I blame the PLP entirely for the rise in violence in Bermuda?

No, but I do blame them in part and the reason for this is that they have grown and perpetuate the mindset that feeds these crimes.

Entitlement without effort.
Not being held accountable for one’s actions.

If people in the highest places can behave this way, and continue to hold office, and be voted back in to office, how can you blame others in the population from behaving with the same mindset.

Do I believe the OBA can fix the problem? No. But I do believe that they have a greater chance of leading by better example than the PLP would if they received another term in office.

Government’s responsibility to helping in this area is working towards creating a more extensive, better trained police force and giving our students a better educational environment, one that includes vocational options.

The community’s responsibility is to work towards the return to family values, self respect and holding ourselves, our friends, and our family members accountable for their actions.

And to speak up. People know who are committing these crimes and are staying silent.

Government can only do some things, the rest is up to us.

Over 20 years ago I remember as a teenager I didn’t want to abide by my mother’s rules. She sent me packing to my father’s house located in Khyber Pass, Warwick. Although my father did what he could, it wasn’t truly wasn’t what I needed at the time. He was busy doing his own thing. So, I found myself walking down the hill and hanging out on the wall outside the post office, with nothing to do and wondering what to do next. Back then we didn’t have guns (that I know of) and was too afraid to even think about shooting another human no matter what the situation was. Long story short, two weeks later I woke up and realized there was more to life than just sitting on a wall or starting trouble. Why? My mother who loved and cared for me, care enough to come back to get me. She refused to let her son go down that dark road. I realized right then that not only did my mother love and care for me enough, but also the community (people who knew us) cared enough to contact her out of concern. It starts with the family and the community first. If they cared enough for me more than I cared for myself at the time, then I owed them and myself the respect and a chance to a better future. Every person involved with this type of behavior (as well as parents) have a choice every time the sun rises and sets. The Bermuda Govt or authorities in power do not hold the magic key this fixing this situation. It starts with the community. You have the ultimate power in saving and getting your community back to where it was. It can happen because it happened for me and others that I helped along the way. Bermuda – you have so much to be thankful for in the 21 sq miles of island you call home. It’s not going to be east but its time to take a stand…DO IT!!

I do agree about the mega schools. If something ain’t broken why try to fix it. I’m 43 years old n I went 2 Warwick Sec , I had friends all over the island. Now I’m the mother of a 17 year old n his had the same friends since preschool. They went pre , primary , middle n high school together all of them. These same good kids hang out in the hood (as I did when I grow up) but they r labled gangters. And they get harassed just because they r from west. The former leaders of this country knew what they were doing just read between the lines. REAL TALK
